626A87ACFFA4AE12FF62FD13F459FDB7.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis. In the New World, males and females of Asyndetus are readily recognized by wing with costal vein ending near R 4 + 5 and vein M 1 weakened or broken (Figs 4, 14, 25, 34, 38). The addition of a parallel-sided face and clypeus, and presence of acrostichal setae, will separate Asyndetus from the related Old World genus Cryptophleps Lichtwardt (Grichanov & Brooks 2017).	en	Runyon, Justin B. 626A87ACFFA0AE19FF62FB8BF433FAFD.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis. Males of this species are distinguished from other West Indian species of Asyndetus by the fore tibia having a dorsal row of long setae and a slender, distally directed, anterodorsal seta at very apex (Fig. 18). The combination of a bare scape, brown halter (Fig. 15), crossvein dm-m distal to crossvein r-m (as in Fig. 14), foreleg without claws and weakly halteriform pulvilli (Fig. 19) further distinguishes males of A. caribeus sp. nov. Females can be recognized by the combination of a bare scape, crossvein dm-m distal to crossvein r-m, and fore tibia with small anterodorsal seta arising beneath apical comb-like row of close-set yellow setulae.	en	Runyon, Justin B. Similar to A. atratus sp. nov., except as noted: Head: Postocular and postcranial setae on ventral half of head mostly to wholly white, a few larger setae at oral margin sometimes brown (Fig. 17). Face not as short, about as long as 3 × width of scape. Clypeus (Fig. 16) brown, sometimes metallic green or blue basally, rather long, concave, with subapical median crest of brown setulae, area lateral to and beyond this crest usually paler. Palpus (Fig. 16) black, small, subtriangular with a few coarse black setae. Antenna (Figs 15, 17) similar in shape, but postpedicel longer and narrower apically (some males have apex narrower and more drawn out); arista-like stylus with article 1 not thickened, usually slightly longer than article 2. Legs: Foreleg: Tibia (Fig. 18) with full-length dorsal row of long (ca 1.5 × tibia width) and posterodorsal row of smaller setae; with distinct slender, distally directed, anterodorsal seta at very apex (ca half as long as tarsomere 1) arising beneath comb-like row of close-set yellow setulae. Tarsus (Fig. 19) without claws, pulvilli weakly halteriform; tarsomere 1 with slightly longer dorsal setae. Mid and hind legs with small claws and small oval pulvilli. Abdomen: Dark metallic green-blue with no obvious pruinosity, each tergite bronze at base, apical tergites sometimes wholly bronze. Hypopygium (Figs 42, 43): Epandrial lobe large, shiny brown with 2 medial setae, apex pointed with apical seta (in one specimen, apex bilobed with 2 setae; Fig. 43), with pointed dorsal lobe near middle weakly attached to epandrium. Surstylus shiny dark brown, bilobed; dorsal lobe small, finger-like with a few minute hairs near apex; ventral lobe large, finger-like and swollen near and just beyond large dorsal seta, with a few scattered minute hairs especially near apex. Postgonites apically sclerotized, light brown, weakly hooked, extending beyond epandrium. Hypandrium reduced to only an internal hypandrial arm and large, subtriangular hypandrial apodeme. Phallus with thin, broad sheath, narrowing close to apex, with weak spiny dorsal lobe near 2 / 3. Cercus bilobed, brown, covered with tiny hairs and larger marginal setae of nearly uniform length. Female. Similar to male, except as follows: Head: Pair of orbital setae (in line with anterior ocellus) large, subequal to ocellar setae. Ommatidia subequal in size. Face normal, not shortened, length 2 × width, green with violet reflections, slightly narrowed below. Clypeus normal, small, wider than long, metallic green. Palpus oval, dark brown, with a few dark setae. Labellum normal, fleshy, not mandibulate. Antenna with pedicel smaller, still protruding dorsally over base of postpedicel; postpedicel small, rounded, wider than long; arista-like stylus with article 1 very short. Legs: Without modified setae, ventral setae on femora less than one-third femur width. Fore tibia with small, apical, often yellowish, anterodorsal seta arising beneath comb-like row of close-set yellow setulae (corresponding to larger anterodorsal seta in males). Mid tibia often yellow-brown. All legs with small claws and small oval pulvilli. Wing: Halter stem brown, knob yellow / white. Abdomen: Broader, weakly pruinose. Ovipositor similar to Chrysotus Meigen (Capellari 2018; Runyon 2022) except sternite 8 strap-like and wrapping ventrally around sternite (as in Aphasmaphleps Grichanov; Capellari & Grichanov 2012), not forked, with membranous part (apical to sclerotized strap) bearing rows of sclerotized spines.	en	Runyon, Justin B. The characters used to distinguish the species synonymized herein (e. g., leg color, number of acrostichal setae, length of ventral setae on femora, number of tibial setae; Robinson 1975) each vary among males collected at the same place and date. All the synonyms were described based on just one male specimen. Van Duzee nor Robinson had enough material to appreciate this variability. Some characters, including tibial setae and whether M 1 is broken can differ between sides of the same specimen. Few patterns in variation exist across islands. Male legs tend to be darker in the southern Lesser Antilles (Dominica, Guadeloupe, St. Lucia) but most females still have yellow fore and often mid tibiae. The characters separating A. currani (yellow tinge to some setae, R 4 + 5 slightly more bent apically) overlap with the variation seen in specimens from the Lesser Antilles and dissection of the male specimen from Honduras (which matches the A. currani type) reveals no obvious differences in the genitalia. Thus, I consider these species to be conspecific and treat A. fratellus as a widespread and variable coastal species, like the situation with A. interruptus (Bickel & Sinclair 1997; Runyon 2020). The male hypopygium was described by Runyon (2020) based on specimens from Montserrat (in that paper, what I called the dorsal lobe of the surstylus is actually the ventral lobe of the surstylus and the ventral lobe of surstylus is the epandrial lobe). Examination of more material from Montserrat and other West Indian islands reveals the shape of the apex of the epandrial lobe varies from rounded (Fig. 39) to pointed (usually narrowly bilobed) (Fig. 40) to weakly bilobed (Fig. 41). In a few specimens, the shape of the epandrial lobes differs between the two sides on the same male. The shape of the epandrial lobe also varies in A. interruptus (Bickel & Sinclair 1997), A. atratus sp. nov., and A. caribeus sp. nov. The position of the large dorsal seta on the surstylus varies from near 1 / 2 to 2 / 3, sometimes with a second neighboring small to large seta. Males of A. fratellus and A. interruptus lack a dorsal lobe of the surstylus and external postgonites, whereas the other West Indian species have a dorsal surstylus lobe and hook-like postgonites that protrude beyond the epandrium. The postgonites of A. interruptus have a rounded, hairy apex but those of A. fratellus are small, bare and pointed apically.	en	Runyon, Justin B. 626A87ACFFB7AE02FF62FBE6F68FFDCD.taxon	discussion	Remarks. This species is often found on sand in or near crab holes. Adults show a high degree of morphological variability including body size (Bickel & Sinclair 1997; Runyon 2020). For smaller specimens overlapping in size with A. fratellus, the easiest way to distinguish males and females of A. interruptus is by the complete or nearly complete rows of biseriate acrostichal setae and the patch of setae in front of anterior spiracle (Fig. 8). The only A. interruptus I have seen without two nearly complete rows of acrostichal setae is a few specimens from St. Kitts and Nevis.	en	Runyon, Justin B.
