According to the latest summary (Schintlmeister 2013), Ptilodon includes six subgenera, one of which is Ptilodontella . The species within Ptilodontella differ in wing pattern and male and female genitalia from those of P. capucina, the type species of Ptilodon . In this case, we exclude Ptilodontella from Ptilodon and restore its standing as a separate genus (stat. rev.). Forewing length ranges from 16 to 18 mm in males and 17 to 21 mm in females (Figs 14–39). All species display shades of brown, with lighter, whitish, or straw-coloured areas. The forewing pattern (Fig. 6) features more or less distinct dark-coloured transversal crenulate lines at the basal, antemedial, postmedial, and terminal areas, outlining these regions. The terminal area has two light-coloured patches that may fade in darker forms of males and females of P. saerdabensis (e.g., Figs 23, 26, 28–29). The anal margin of the forewing has a medial dark brown tuft of elongated scales (Fig. 6, anal tuft). The hindwing pattern (Fig. 6) includes a more or less prominent light brown wavy subterminal line dividing the hindwing into mediobasal and terminal regions, along with a speckled anal patch made of brown and dark brown scales.

Male genitalia (Figs 42–65). The clasping apparatus features an elongate uncus with a bilobed apex; an arcuate, medially narrowed tegumen, laterally fused with a narrow, slightly V-shaped, broadening ventrally vinculum. The valva is broad and short, divided into a semioval cucullus and about half the size of the sacculus, both loosely covered with setae. The valva includes a species-specific distal process. The anellus is semimembranous, relatively densely covered with short setae, and bears a pair of lateral knob-like sclerotized extensions. The juxta is somewhat rectangular. The phallus is more or less C-shaped, with a pronounced coecum and an elongated dorsal carina process. The vesica is membranous, conical, and elongated, laterally bearing a pair of somewhat oval serrated plates (modified elasma?). The eighth tergite is somewhat trapezoid, with a posterior notch and a medial membranous area; the eighth sternite is somewhat more sclerotized posteriorly than at the base and features a more or less pronounced pair of posterior convexities (Figs 66–71).

Female genitalia (Figs 72–77) are characterized by a weakly sclerotized, somewhat plate- or cup-shaped sterigma (vaginal plates are not prominent). The inner surface of the sterigma has an oval or round ostium opening ventrally and may contain a cavity for the carina process dorsally (Fig. 10, caudal view). Ductus bursae is reduced (ductus seminalis connects the distal part of the corpus bursae very close to the ostium bursae). The corpus bursae consists of a tubular distal part and a dilated, ovoid or pear-shaped proximal part. The seventh tergite is somewhat rectangular, basally membranous, and becomes more sclerotized medially and towards the distal margin, with the most sclerotization at the distal lateral ends; the seventh sternite has a somewhat trapezoid shape, is basally membranous, and becomes more sclerotized medially and towards the distal margin (Figs 78–80). The eighth sternite is semimembranous, wrinkled, with a short, distal, spatula-shaped protrusion (Fig. 10, lateral view).

Diagnosis. The species of the genus differ from the type species of Ptilodon by having light-coloured terminal patches on the forewing (compare Figs 4–5 and 6); lacking gnathos and socia; having a larger cucullus and a smaller sacculus; featuring a single (even if paired) distal process of valva instead of a pair; possessing a stem-like instead of a more cup-shaped juxta; with a larger coecum; a dorsal instead of a ventral carina process; no cornutus; and a pair of elongated serrated plates on the vesica (compare Figs 7 and 8). Additionally, they have a shorter sternite with a smaller notch and more robust posterior sclerotization (compare Figs 7 and 66–71); an anterior apophysis; a protrusion of the eighth sternite; absence of an antrum and signum (compare Figs 9 and 10). The vesica everts directly into the tubular distal part of the corpus bursae and gets fixed with the help of the serrated plates, instead of everting into the antrum and getting fixed with a single dorsal cornutus (compare Figs 81–82 and 83–86).

Notes on terminology of the genitalia and imagery issues. There is no consensus among the co-authors of this study and one reviewer on whether the distal process of the valva (Fig. 8) is an outgrowth of the cucullus or the sacculus; examining the muscles could help clarify this and lead to a more appropriate term (it would then be called a cucullar or saccular process). The dorsal process of the phallus is called the carina process here in accordance with the reviewer’s suggestion, even though it is positioned medially on the phallus of the new species (see Figs 42–44). The sclerotized area at the base of the vesica ejaculatorius in P. capucina is referred to as elasma due to the lack of a better term (Fig. 7; proposed by Volynkin 2024, 189), although it’s unclear whether it’s homologous to elasma in Lithosiini, as mentioned by the reviewer. However, the pair of lateral serrated plates on the vesica of Ptilodontella spp. is not called elasmas, since they are not located at the base of the vesica ejaculatorius. Because ante- and postvaginal plates are not separate or well-defined in Ptilodon capucina and Ptilodontella spp., “collectively they are referred to as the sterigma” (Kristensen 2003, 118). The sterigma appears different when seen during dissection compared to when mounted in Euparal and covered with a cover slip under pressure (Fig. 77). This could create a false impression of a distinct genital structure within the same species (compare Figs 75 and 76). It’s best to observe or photograph the structures floating freely in glycerol or another viscoelastic material (such as hand sanitizer gel) to preserve their features for comparison.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/5C3E87B4DC7BB23EFF42FCFF4D17D5FC	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Ptilodontella cucullina differs from P. saerdabensis in its shorter rami (compare Figs 11 and 12), less variable intraspecific wing colouration of the forewing (compare Figs 14–21 and 22–29), slightly shorter apical lobes of the uncus, a bifurcated instead of an undivided distal process of the valva, and a more or less pronounced medial concavity on the outer margin of the sacculus (Fig. 42, indicated by an arrow). It also has smaller lateral outgrowths of the anellus, a much more bent phallus, and a longer, smoothly curved dorsal process of the phallus instead of a shorter, almost right-angled one (compare Figs 42 and 43). Additionally, it features a longer posterior apophysis, a sterigma about twice as large, and a tubular distal part of the corpus bursae approximately twice as short (compare Figs 72 and 74).

Adults of P. cucullina are virtually identical in colouration to P. alberti sp. n., but it has slightly thinner rami (see Figs 11 and 13), shorter apical lobes of the uncus, and a distal process of the valva that is pointed and more heavily sclerotized, as opposed to rounded and less sclerotized in P. alberti sp. n. It also has a more pronounced medial concavity on the outer margin of the sacculus (Fig. 42), a wider juxta, and a dorsal carina process that is up to twice as short and situated closer to the vesica. Its phallus is more strongly bent (compare Figs 42 and 44), and the sterigma is plate-shaped rather than cup-shaped (compare Figs 83–84 and 85–86). Lastly, the distal tubular part of the corpus bursae is about twice as short (compare Figs 72 and 73).

1 “Schiffermüller, Ignaz (1727–1809), Lepidopt. von Österreich 1806 an Naturhist. It also varies in the size and shape of the distal process of the valva, from smaller with single apices (Fig. 50) to larger ones with additional dents (e.g., Fig. 46). The distalmost dent may be rounded at the apex (Fig. 49). Additionally, the eighth tergite and sternite show slight variation in the intensity of sclerotization (Figs 66–67).

Distribution (Fig. 1). Daniel (1938) mentioned that the species was “described after 2 ♂, Elburs mts. s., Tacht i Suleiman; Särdab-Valley (Vandarban) 1900–2200 m, 10.–14.VII.37. A third ♂ from the same area is completely solid dark brown (roughly like palpina giraffina Hbn.), the two lines bounding the central area clearly defined, and only remnants of the whitish outer marginal spot remain in the form of small, light dots. The hindwings and underside are blackish-grey, and the body is also dark”. This dark specimen he assumed to be “a random aberration (possibly a mutant) of the described race and has therefore included it in the type series without a name” 2. Two of the three mentioned males are stored at the MWM/ZSM: one labeled as the HT (Fig. 22), and another as a “Cotype” (Fig. 23). The latter may be the dark specimen that Daniel included in the type series “without a name.” Here, we designate the “HT” male specimen (Fig. 22) as the lectotype of Lophopteryx cuculla saerdabensis Daniel, 1938, to secure the stability in nomenclature, whereas the second known male (Fig. 23) becomes a paralectotype. The location of the third specimen, the second paralectotype, is still to be determined.

Daniel (1965) raised Lophopteryx cuculla saerdabensis to the species status: “...I described saerdabensis as a ssp. of cuculla Esp.; the genital examination now performed proves that it is a distinct species” 3.

Diagnosis. Adults of P. alberti sp. n. are nearly identical externally to P. cucullina, but P. alberti sp. n. has slightly thicker rami (compare Figs 13 and 11), longer apical lobes of the uncus, rounded tips of the distal process of the valva instead of pointed ones as in P. cucullina, and lacks medial concavity on the outer margin of the sacculus (Fig. 42, indicated with an arrow). It also features a narrower juxta and a dorsal process of the phallus that is up to twice as long and positioned farther from the vesica; the phallus is less bent (compare Figs 44 and 42). The sterigma is cup-shaped instead of plate-shaped, and a ductus about twice as long (compare Figs 73 and 72).

Ptilodontella alberti sp. n. differs from P. saerdabensis by having shorter rami (compare Figs 13 and 12), less variable forewing colouration (compare Figs 30–39 and 22–29), slightly longer apical lobes of the uncus, and a bifurcated instead of a single undivided distal process of the valva. It also has smaller lateral outgrowths of the anellus, a dorsal process of the phallus that is positioned farther from the vesica (compare Figs 44 and 43), and the distal margin of the eighth sternite with a pair of more pronounced posterior convexities (compare Figs 70–71 and 68–69). Additionally, it features slightly longer posterior apophyses and a cup-shaped instead of plate-shaped sterigma (compare Figs 73 and 74).

Description. Male (Figs 30, 32, 34, 36, 38–40). Head. Antenna bipectinate, consisting of 47 flagellomeres. Flagellum covered with straw and brown scales. Rami gradually elongate from about the same size to twice the size of flagellum in basal flagella towards middle flagella and then gradually shorten towards tip of antenna getting barely pronounced; rami densely covered with elongated sensilla (Fig. 8). Palpi mottled with dark straw and brown scales. Head dorsally mottled with straw and brown hairs. Thorax dorsally mottled with straw and brown long scales getting darker towards their top, with more or less pronounced dark longitudinal stripe along tegula, scutellum with dark brown spot outlined with pale straw and then dark brown scales and distal crest of dark brown scales. Forewing length: 16–18.5 mm. Somewhat triangular with slightly convex costal and anal margins, and wavy outer margin, obtuse tornal angle pronounced. Transverse lines more or less pronounced; basal line interrupted, wavy, dark brown; antemedial line interrupted, zigzagged, dark brown; postmedial line interrupted, crenulate, doubled dark brown; and terminal line wavy brown. Basal field light straw with sparse brown and dark brown scales; antemedial field divided with dark brown mediobasal and basal longitudinal streaks into light straw dorsal third with sparse brown and dark brown scales, brown to dark brown medial and anal thirds with sparse light straw scales; medial field divided with medioterminal streak into dorsal and anal areas: dorsal area gradually darkening from straw to brown with sparse dark brown scales towards streak, whereas anal area gradually darkening from mottled straw and brown near streak to brown and dark brown towards anal margin getting even darker speckled blackish brown and pale straw at anal tuft; terminal field divided into chequered brown and mottled pale straw areas: apical area mottled with straw and brown scales and well pronounced dark brown apical terminal streak, terminal patches mottled with white and sparse greyish and dark brown scales divided with dark brown medioterminal streak surrounded with mottled brown area, and mottled with brown and dark brown tornal area. Scales may be darker along veins. Cilia colour as in terminal areas. Hindwing short, widens towards rounded outer margin. Mottled with brown and dark brown scales, divided with faded brown subterminal line into mediobasal and terminal field, latter may be marginally lighter in colour, anal area bearing dark brown anal patch with well pronounced contrasting pale straw fragment of subterminal line. Cilia mottled with brown and dark brown scales, lightening distad. Abdomen. Abdomen dorsally mottled with dark straw and brown scales, darker in-between tergites, with paler mottled brown tip. Genitalia (Figs 57–65). Uncus somewhat digitiform, basally rounded, and connected with tegumen via membrane, apically slightly swollen with a pair of elongated claw-shaped lobes. Tegumen lobes somewhat ovoid, laterally fused with narrow band-like vinculum. Valva broad, well-divided with medial longitudinal ridge into semi-spherical cucullus and semi-deltoid sacculus, both sparsely covered with short setae, mediodistally bears bilobate process with rounded apices, proximal lobe two to three times larger than distal one. Sacculus with more or less pronounced ventrodistal knob. Vinculum ventrally split into halves, fused with juxta. Juxta stem-like, sclerotized, tapering distally, towards connection with phallus.Anellus laterally sclerotized ring with lateral knob-like extensions and medial membranous area covered with setae; anellus connected with juxta medially, with cucullus ventrobasally, and surrounding phallus. Phallus tubular, nearly straight, about eight times longer than its diameter; phallic tube bears mediodorsally claw-shaped carina process about half-length of phallus, proximally well-pronounced coecum. Vesica as wide as phallus, gradually tapering distally, basally bears two sclerotized serrated plates on opposite sides of vesica, each nearly the length of coecum. The eighth tergite is somewhat trapezoid, with a posterior notch and a medial membranous area; the eighth sternite is somewhat more sclerotized posteriorly than at base and features more or less pronounced pair of posterior convexities (Figs 70–71). Female (Figs 31, 33, 35, 37, 41). Externally similar to male, but larger in size and with filiform antenna. Forewing length: 17–20.5 mm. Genitalia (Figs 73, 75–76). Papilla analis broad, semioval, densely covered with setae. Posterior apophysis about three times longer than anterior ones. Sterigma cup-like, wrinkled, slightly longer than wide, with ventral V-shaped incision and about twice as wide wrinkled and laterally sclerotized base connected with seventh sternite. Corpus bursae consists of tubular distal part and dilated, pear-shaped proximal part. Signum absent. Seventh tergite somewhat rectangular, basally membranous, more sclerotized medially and towards distal margin, with the most sclerotization at distal lateral ends; seventh sternite somewhat trapezoid, basally membranous, becomes more sclerotized medially and towards distal margin (Fig. 79). Eighth sternite semimembranous, with short, distal, spatula-shaped protrusion (Figs 10, lateral view; 85).

Note on copulation. We conclude from the photos that the carina process of P. cucullina fits into a dorsal cavity in the sterigma (Figs 10, caudal view; 83–84), whereas the process of P. alberti sp. n. is likely outside the sterigma, which is too narrow to accommodate it.

Distribution (Fig. 1). Widely spread across the Greater and Lesser Caucasus and the Pontic Mountains. In the Greater Caucasus, the northern border lies between the foothills and the lowland Pontic steppe, and the eastern border nearly reaches the Caspian Sea. In contrast, the southern branch extends through the Lesser Caucasus toward the Alborz range. No confirmed sympatric finding of the new species and P. saerdabensis has been recorded so far from the area between the Lesser Caucasus and the Alborz range. The western branch extends from the Lesser Caucasus along the northern Pontic Mountains, reaching Bolu Province in northwestern Turkey. Can Cengiz et al. (2015), Kemal & Koçak (2016), and users of the iNaturalist online network have provided a few more collection localities in Turkey and Georgia that follow the general pattern and are marked on the maps (Figs 2–3).

Bionomics.Adults were collected from June to September from altitudes up to 2200 meters within the following ecoregions: Caucasus mixed forests, Northern Anatolian conifer and deciduous forests, Eastern Anatolian deciduous forests, and Euxine-Colchic broadleaf forests (Fig. 3). In the Republic of South Ossetia, some paratypes were collected in forest steppes (Figs 87–88), while the HT was collected in a mixed forest near Koz Lake (Fig. 89). Near Arkhyz (Karchay-Cherkess Republic, Russia), one adult was found in a degraded highland meadow close to conifer forest with sparse deciduous trees. At the site near Kamyshanova Polyana (Krasnodar Krai, Russia), adults were collected on a clearing in a mixed forest that included Acer pseudoplatanus . The early stages are still unknown. Host plants are not confirmed but likely include maples ( Acer spp., Aceraceae), as in the genus Ptilodon .

Etymology. The new species is named in honor of the late Albert Dzhusoev, who helped organize the expedition to the Caucasus highlands, where part of the type series, including the holotype, was collected. Albert provided invaluable assistance in studying lepidopteran biodiversity in the previously unexplored Transcaucasian territory of the Republic of South Ossetia (Streltzov et al. 2022a, b, 2024; Nedoshivina et al. 2023; Sinev et al. 2023; Naydenov et al. 2025).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/5C3E87B4DC71B225FF42FDA24E6ED5FC	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
