Body compressed and elongated (Fig. 2). Head small and mouth large, posterior tip of upper jaw beyond posterior margin of eyes. Angle of mouth sloping downward to horizontal axis of body. Teeth several rows and tongue acutely rounded. Eyes large, with upper part slightly protruding upwards. Interorbital very narrow. Left and right cheeks close to each other behind eye. No scales on cheek and operculum. Two dorsal fins, soft part of ray usually lower than spinous part. Origin of first dorsal fin slightly behind origin of pectoral fin, posterior end of first dorsal fin at center of body. Anus located at center of body. Shape of second dorsal fin similar to anal fin, anal fin origin behind rear origin of second dorsal fin. Rays of second dorsal fin and anal fin branched. Caudal fin separated from both posterior second dorsal and anal fins. Tip of caudal fin rounded and extends slightly backward in elliptical shape.

Color.

Side of body adorned with large and small dark brown blotches. Underside of body white. Black strip present beneath eyes. Body features five transverse black bands, including a black line extending from upper part of pectoral fin to region below gill opening. First dorsal fin has a light grey base with scattered orange spots. Tip of first to third rays yellow, third to fifth rays black, beyond fifth rays dark yellow. Each membrane between rays of second dorsal fin contains about four orange patterns, appearance of having four strips. Base of pectoral fin has black spots, and membrane light yellow. Pelvic fin black in the central part and white on both sides. Inner part of anal fin light grey, becoming black toward tip. Upper part of caudal fin brown, gradually lightening toward center and becoming black toward underside.

Based on an analysis of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene (COI) sequence (546 bp), the present specimen was at a genetic distance of 0.026 from T. oni (OR 5790890) and different from other Tomiyamichthys species with genetic distances of 0.191 –0.240 (Fig. 3).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/C31B6417CC9A5B71AD7B3E53D9C1C886	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
