The female genitalia of the holotype are figured here for the first time. In Gilligan et al. (2018) orbimaculata Kurentsov, 1956, and ussuriensis Kurentsov, 1956 were listed as junior synonyms of advena with the mention that their types are deposited in ZISP. However, the types of species described by Kurentsov were initially kept in the Federal Scientific Center of the East Asia Terrestrial Biodiversity in Vladivostok, Russia. Unfortunately, Kurentsov’s collection is no longer deposited in Vladivostok and it is most likely impossible to determine whether it was transferred or lost. As a result, the type specimens of orbimaculata Kurentsov, 1956, and ussuriensis Kurentsov, 1956 have not been located and are presumed lost.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/5857225FFFF95C15A390FCD2FEE0FA37	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. The holotype is deposited in NHMV. In the original description, Filipjev mentioned three male specimens from ZISP: 2 males collected 2–10.VII 1933 by Zerny and one male collected 25.VII 1933 by Schwingenschuss. However, an additional male specimen is present in ZISP with the same label as the first two by Zerny, though it lacks labels explicitly designating it as a part of the type series. Despite this omission, I consider it likely to belong to the type series, as it is improbable that a specimen sharing identical labels and morphological characteristics would have been excluded intentionally by the author. Genitalia of both sexes were illustrated by Razowski (1965) .

Taxonomic notes. Razowski (1965) initially listed atlantis Filipjev, 1934 as a bona species, but later, in his work of 1989, he reclassified it as one of three subspecies of stephensiana Doubleday, 1850, alongside anatolica Obraztsov, 1950, and stolidana Walker, 1863. This subspecies is distributed in Morocco (Razowski 1989) and differs from the nominate subspecies by its shorter sacculus. We follow this criterium and keep the taxon as a subspecies. However, given the variability of the male genitalia of stephensiana Doubleday, 1850, a deep taxonomic study of the whole group, including molecular analysis, is in need to clarify the real status of atlantis .

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/5857225FFFFF5C13A390FF5BFB20FB81	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Acleris caucasica (Filipjev, 1962) .

Comments. In the original description, Filipjev stated that the female was collected on 3.X.1887. However, the only female specimen bearing a gold circle, which indicates its type status, was collected on 9.X.1887. Therefore, I conclude that the collection date provided in the original description was likely erroneous.

Taxonomic notes. The species caucasica was originally described in the genus Peronea and was subsequently transferred to Acleris by Razowski (1966) as a bona species. Later, in his works of 2001, 2002 and 2008, the same author considered it as a subspecies of Acleris lacordairana (Duponchel, 1836) . Genitalia of both sexes were illustrated in the original description; however, Razowski (2008) noted that female genitalia of caucasica were not re-examined and from the original drawing one cannot correctly determine the species. Unfortunately, in the vial containing genitalia preparation № 3145, corresponding to the female paratype, only bursa copulatrix was preserved. The shape of corpus bursae and signum matches that of lacordairana according to Razowski (2008).

On the other hand, I examined two females from the ZISP collection that are externally similar to the holotype of caucasica and lacordairana sensu Razowski (2008): one originates from the type locality of caucasica (Fig. 6), and the other is from Tiflis (now Tbilisi), a city located approximately 120 km west of the type locality. Both specimens have a bursa copulatrix of the same shape as that of the caucasica paratype but lack a signum (Fig. 82). In general, the female genitalia of these Georgian specimens are close to those of the nominotypical subspecies of lacordairana and its other subspecies, roxana Razowski et Yasuda, 1964, from Japan (according to Razowski 2008). However, they show clear differences: antrum broad, its length equals width, whereas in lacordairana, it is 1.5 times the width; proximal lobes of sterigma almost as broad as in roxana; proximal 2/3 of ductus bursae folded and maximum 4 times broader than basal third (in lacordairana and roxana, maximum 3 times broader).

I preliminarily conclude that these two females most likely belong to caucasica, and a discrimination based on the female genitalia is provided above. However, additional material is needed to confirm this assumption. In the male genitalia of caucasica ventral incision of sacculus before subterminal lobe shorter than in two other subspecies and directed backward toward valva base, overlapping notch of lower valva edge.

In Gilligan et al. (2018) caucasica and roxana are interpreted as bona species and longulana Eversmann, 1844, is listed as a junior synonym of caucasica . Based on my investigation, the specific status of caucasica can be supported by the differences in male and female genitalia discussed above. However, the synonymy of longulana is entirely incorrect. In the male genitalia of the longulana lectotype (Nedoshivina 2007), sacculus concave before end as in lacordairana whereas in caucasica, it is slightly curved; subterminal lobe of sacculus in longulana is long and distinct as in lacordairana, while in caucasica, it is relatively small, and ventral incision before the lobe is shorter than in longulana and lacordairana . Therefore, longulana Eversmann, 1844, should be considered as a junior synonym of lacordairana Duponchel, 1836, as proposed by Kyrki (1982).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/5857225FFFFF5C12A390FB94FB9BFC6B	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. However, in the same publication on page 38, the author translated the description of elongata into German, where the collecting dates were given as 17.V and 20.V. In the ZISP collection, there are only three specimens of elongata designated as types by Filipjev, with the collecting dates 17.V and 20.V. Therefore, it can be assumed that the dates 30.V and 2.VI were provided erroneously. In Gilligan et al. (2018), the type locality was imprecisely listed as “Siberia.”

Taxonomic notes. The synonymy was likely established by Kuznetzov (e.g., 1978), but the syntypes were not dissected. My examination of the type material confirms this synonymy, and the genitalia of the male lectotype are illustrated here for the first time.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/5857225FFFFD5C10A390F9E1FD80FE2B	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Razowski (1984) illustrated the genitalia of both male and female type specimens in Microlepidoptera Palaearctica. He accurately listed the labels of the male holotype in the text; however, the captions for the genitalia images were incorrect. Specifically, he noted that the male genitalia depicted on Plate 63, originating from genitalia preparation 988, belonged to a specimen labeled “Okr.[estnosti]Wladiwostoka, p.[ol]-ostr.[ow] De-Fris, 27.VI.1957 ” [Outskirts of Vladivostok] from the ZISP collection. However, genitalia preparation 988 contains only the male and female genitalia of the type specimens, none of which originated from the outskirts of Vladivostok. It is now impossible to determine whether a type specimen is illustrated here .

Additionally, in the caption for the female genitalia drawing on Plate 98, the labels of the male holotype listed in the text were erroneously provided. These errors were repeated in Razowski (2008), with an additional mistake: the caption for the female genitalia states “holotype, Russia, Amur District,” whereas both Yakovlevka and Vinogradovka are located in Primorsky Krai (= Russian Far East), which is near the Amur Region but not identical to it. In Gilligan et al. (2018), the type locality was incorrectly listed as “Japan,” and the holotype sex was marked as “unknown.”

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/5857225FFFFC5C10A390FE3AFEB9FA04	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. (2018), the type locality was given imprecisely as “Siberia” and the holotype sex was marked as “unknown”.

Taxonomic notes. Gilligan et al. (2018) referred to the holotype as the type specimen; however, no holotype was designated in the original description. The species was synonymized with wimmerana Treitschke, 1835, likely by Kuznetzov (e.g., 1978), and subsequent works followed this synonymy. My examination of the type and non-type material of gracilis, as well as a series of specimens of wimmerana from Siberia in the ZISP collection, reveals that although the male genitalia of gracilis are generally very similar to those of wimmerana (e.g., as illustrated in Razowski 2003), consistent differences can be observed in the shape of the valva and wing coloration. These characters are considered here as the basis for rejecting the previously established synonymy and treating gracilis as a distinct species (stat. rev.). However, molecular data are needed to confirm this status for gracilis . Forewing ground color of gracilis dark ochreous, lighter nearby costal edge, whereas in wimmerana ground colour grey with whitish scales forming thin longitudinal lines. Costal strigulae in gracilis short, distinct only on costa; in wimmerana costal strigulae longer, merged distally. Median fascia not defined in gracilis wing pattern, but in wimmerana it forms dorsal whitish spot. In male genitalia of gracilis ventral edge of sacculus forms obtuse angle, valvae neck shorter than sacculus, arched ventrally. In wimmerana ventral edge of sacculus forms almost 90-degree angle, valvae neck almost as long as sacculus with parallel edges and less rounded ventrally.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/5857225FFFF25C1EA390FF5BFB26FB11	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. However, since the species was described from multiple specimens and no holotype was designated in the original description, the specimen illustrated by Razowski should be designated as the lectotype. Female genitalia were not illustrated in the original description. In his paper, Filipjev only mentioned that the female genitalia of the new species differ from all other species by the presence of chitinous wrinkles on the ductus bursae. Razowski (2009) noted that the female genitalia of lydiae Fil. remain unknown. Thus, an image of the female genitalia is provided here for the first time .

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/5857225FFFF15C1BA390FAFCFDFCFE73	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. They also considered the type specimens as a holotype and a paratype. Since holotype was not designated in the original description, the specimen mentioned by Danilevsky & Kuznetzov (1968) as the holotype is designated here to be a lectotype.

Taxonomic notes. Danilevsky & Kuznetzov (1968) treated seminotata as a subspecies of Pammene trauniana (Dennis et Schiffermüller, 1775), distributed in Crimea, the Caucasus, Iran, and mountainous Turkmenistan. They noted that high variability and the presence of intermediate forms do not justify recognizing seminotata as a separate species. Razowski (2003) questioned this opinion and suggested that these specimens require re- consideration.

In addition to the previously mentioned types, the ZISP collection includes the following specimens of seminotata: a female from Crimea, a specimen without an abdomen from Georgia, eight specimens from Armenia, and one female from Turkmenistan. My examination of the type specimens of seminotata and the material mentioned above reveals that seminotata does not correspond to any specimens of trauniana in the ZISP collection or those illustrated in Razowski (2003). The male and female genitalia of seminotata are identical to those of regiana Zeller, 1849, sensu Razowski (2003).

At the same time, regiana includes another subspecies described from Georgia – Pammene regiana caucasica Kuznetzov, 1968 – which does not correspond to either regiana sensu Razowski (2003) or seminotata . Since type and non-type specimens of seminotata show no clear differences from European specimens of regiana, seminotata is considered here as a junior synonym of regiana (syn. nov.). The taxonomic status of caucasica remains unclear and requires further research.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/5857225FFFEA5C05A390FC20FE64FF53	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
