Eyes 0–2 + 0–2, pigmented or unpigmented. Body without blue hypodermic pigment. Dorsal tubercles present or partially absent. Mouthparts slender, maxilla styliform, mandible thin with 2 or 3 teeth. Labral chaetotaxy 0/2, 2–4. Dorsal macrosetae smooth or barbulated, never palmate in shape. Sensillum S 7 on Ant. IV hypertrophied, at least twice as thick and longer than the others. Cephalic tubercles Af and Cl separate and separated from tubercle Oc. Tubercles Di and De on head separate, sometimes Di not differentiated. Line connecting short setae of tubercle De crossing the line of the De and Di macrosetae (“croisé” type sensu Deharveng 1983). Tubercles L and So on head fused, sometimes fused with tubercle Dl. Setae Di on first thoracic tergum always present. Ssetae present in typical arrangement and number: 22/11111 on each half tergite from Th. II to Abd. V. Abdomen V tubercles varying: 4 tubercles as 2 (De+Dl+L) and 2 Di; 3 tubercles as 2 (De+Dl+L) and (Di+Di); or 2 tubercles as 2 (Di+De+Dl+L). Tibiotarsal chaetotaxy usually 19, 19, 18. Incomplete chaetotaxy on head: setae O and L3 absent, setae D and E on head free, setae A, C, D, E and Oca on head as microsetae. Ocm and Ocp long macroseta. Tubercles on Di area on Th. I absent. Setae De2 and De3 on Th. II–III free. Tubercles De on Abd. I–IV present and with macrosetae Ml. Tubercle L on Abd. IV without free setae. Abd. V with four tubercles: 2 Di and 2 (De+Dl+L). Male ventral organ absent.

Description. Body length of adults and juveniles (without antennae) 0.65 to 2.45 mm (holotype: 1.35 mm). Body white, with 2+2 large unpigmented eyes, anterior eye located outside tubercle Oc (Fig. 1A). Dorsal ordinary setae of four types: long macrosetae (Ml), short macrosetae (Mc), mesosetae and microsetae. Long macrosetae thick, straight, narrowly sheathed, feebly serrated, apically rounded (Figs 1A, B). Macrosetae Mc morphologically similar to long macrosetae, but much shorter. Mesosetae similar to ventral setae, thin, smooth and pointed. Microsetae similar to mesosetae, but shorter. S–setae of tergites thin, smooth and short, shorter than nearby macrosetae (Figs 1A, C).

Antennae typical of the genus with sensillum S7 hypertrophied. Dorsal and ventral chaetotaxy of antennae as in Table 2. Apical vesicle distinct, trilobed. Buccal cone long with labral sclerotizations non-ogival (Fig.1D). Labral chaetotaxy 0/2, 4; prelabral setae absent. Labium with four basal, three distal and four lateral setae, papillae x absent. Maxilla styliform (Fig. 1 F), mandible thin with three teeth, apical tooth divided into two small teeth (Fig. 1G).

Dorsal chaetotaxy of head as in Fig. 1A and Table 2. Tubercles Di on head developed. Tubercles Di on Th. I not differentiated (Fig. 1A). On Abd. V tubercle Di with 3 setae (Fig. 2). Cryptopygy absent, Abd. VI well visible from above.

Ventrally on head, setal groups Vea, Vem and Vep with 3, 4, 4 setae respectively (Fig. 1E). Group Vi on head with 6 setae. On Abd. IV, furcal vestige without microsetae, tubercle L with 7 setae, free setae absent.

Leg chaetotaxy as in Table 2. Claw without internal tooth. On tibiotarsi, seta M present and setae B4 and B5 relatively short and pointed.

Variability. In six individuals, bilateral reduction of setae E on the head was observed, and in one individual also of setae D.

Etymology. The new species is named in honour of Dr. Richard J. Snider, eminent American collembologist, for his contributions mainly on Symphypleona.

Remarks. Because of its long macrosetae on head and body, Sensillanura snideri sp. nov. looks similar to S. barberi and S. santizaragozai; however, in the new species cephalic seta A is a very small microseta and in the two others it is a long macroseta or a mesoseta. In S. barberi the long macrosetae are barbulate and in the others they are smooth. S. snideri sp. nov. belongs to the group of species in the genus with 3 ocular setae. Three species have the combination of Oca as a microseta, Ocm as long macroseta and Ocp as long macroseta: S. giribeti sp. nov., S. subiasi sp. nov., and S. snideri sp. nov.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/59248786B067FFE01AEEFF59FDE2B115	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. S. marimutti sp. nov. is a small species (1.06 mm). The head and body setae are macrosetae, but not as long as the preceding species. The species has a unique ocular chaetotaxy: Oca and Ocp are microsetae and Ocm is a macroseta. The clypeal setae F and G are similar to S. bullsa and S. austriaca in being a short macroseta and a mesoseta, respectively. Likewise, S. marimutti sp. nov. has setae C and D as mesosetae, but in the previous two species they are microsetae. All the abdominal tubercles on Abd. V of S. marimutti sp. nov. are fused in one large tubercle on each side, like in S. santizaragozai, S. barberi and S. bullsa, but Abd. I‒IV of the species lacks the macroseta on tubercle De that those species have. This condition also occurs in S. boneti sp. nov.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/59248786B06BFFE01AEEFE78FB7BB73D	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Sensillanura bullsa also lacks seta Oca, but it has two large ocular setae, while S. boneti sp. nov. has only one large seta and one small seta. The new species is also differentiated from all the other species of the genus by external displacement of the sensorial setae from tubercle De on Abd. I‒III, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 12A. This new species is the only American species with a reduction of chaetotaxy on femora and tibiotarsi (Table 7), with one less seta on each femur and tibiotarsus than in the other five new species described herein.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/59248786B075FFF21AEEF8C2FC2DB4B5	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Tibiotarsi I–III with 18 setae each, seta M present, setae B4 and B5 relatively short and pointed. Claw without internal tooth (Fig.13D).

Remarks. Since the condition of the preserved lectotype was poor, many features important for the taxonomy of Neanurinae and Sensillanura could not be determined and described to a satisfactory degree. Nevertheless, we include an emended description of Wray’s species for two reasons. The first is the finding of two eyes (Wray stated eyes were absent), which significantly affects the placement of this species within the genus, because until now it was combined with another blind species, S. caeca . The second is the indication in the current description of many previously unknown but important characters. These characters will be instrumental for identifying S. bullsa in future collections at or near the type locality.

Arango-Galván & Palacios-Vargas (2017) in their revision of the genus Sensillanura checked the only specimen sent by K.A. Christiansen with the following data: Female neotype from 26-IX-1983. South Carolina, Barnwell Co., Savannah River Plant. Rd. Junction Rd. 9 deciduous litter, Wm. Hargrove, USA. After comparison with the original description, we conclude that this is an undescribed species and not S. bullsa .

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/59248786B079FFF41AEEFAD8FC54B3F0	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
