Phylogenetically, H. rhizosphaerae is closely related to H. crousii and H. cylindroconidius (Fig. 1). Hawksworthiomyces rhizosphaerae (KUNCC 24-17610) differs from H. crousii (CMW 37531) in 8 / 793 bp (1.01 %) of LSU, 15 / 480 bp (3.13 %) of ITS, 4 / 226 bp (1.77 %) of TEF 1 - α, and 25 / 534 bp (4.68 %) of RPB 2; and from H. cylindroconidius (GMBC 5345) in 5 / 793 bp (0.63 %) of LSU and 8 / 449 bp (1.78 %) of ITS. Hawksworthiomyces crousii (CMW 37531) differs from H. rhizosphaerae (KUNCC 24-17610) in having slightly wider conidiogenous cells (5–22 × 1–2 μm) and larger denticles (0.5–1 × 0.5–1 μm vs. 0.3–0.6 × 0.3–0.5 μm). Furthermore, the conidia of H. crousii are larger (3–6.5 × 1.5–3.5 μm) than those of H. rhizosphaerae and are not distinctly guttulate (De Beer et al. 2016). Hawksworthiomyces cylindroconidius (GMBC 5345) differs from H. rhizosphaerae (KUNCC 24-17610) in having monoblastic conidiogenous cells and significantly longer, unbranched conidiophores (94.5–131.5 × 11–20.5 μm), whereas H. rhizosphaerae possesses polyblastic conidiogenous cells with distinct denticles (Liu et al. 2025). Therefore, based on morphological differences and phylogenetic evidence, H. rhizosphaerae is introduced herein as a novel species.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/CC2B9D8D2F75537CB329AA25DE90D6C5	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. The verrucose, 1 (– 2) - septate conidia are 3.0–6.4 × 1.8–2.7 μm and are released by rhexolytic secession; globose to subglobose chlamydospores are present. Phylogenetically, M. linderae formed a sister clade to M. vietnamensis (Fig. 2). A comparison of nucleotide base pairs between them revealed differences of 24 / 527 bp (4.55 %, including 3 gaps) and 8 / 748 bp (1.06 %, no gaps) in the ITS and LSU sequences, respectively. Morphologically, M. linderae (KUNCC 24-17617) is distinguished from M. thailandicus (CBS 145767) and M. vietnamensis (CBS 136209) (Crous et al. 2014; Hernández-Restrepo et al. 2020). Melnikomyces thailandicus and M. vietnamensis have larger conidia than M. linderae . Those of M. thailandicus are smooth, fusoid, subhyaline, (8 –) 9.5–12 (– 13) × (2 –) 2.5 (– 3) μm, while those of M. vietnamensis are fusoid-ellipsoidal, (7 –) 9–10 (– 11) × (2.5 –) 3 (– 3.5) μm. Furthermore, M. thailandicus and M. vietnamensis have distinctly wider conidiophores (2.0–3.0 μm and 1.5–2.0 μm, respectively) than M. linderae (0.9–1.7 μm). Therefore, strains KUNCC 24-17617 and KUNCC 25-20169 are introduced herein as M. linderae sp. nov.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/4B204CFEC08659D09522002853E56A40	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
