All three species are moderately calcified, bear alae with a spinose apex, and exhibit prominent caudal processes, whereas the caudal process in C. richarddinglei is relatively less prominent when compared to C. demenocali and C. porterae . While both C. richarddinglei and C. demenocali show a weak surface reticulation restricted to the central part of the carapace, C. porterae shows a strong punctate and reticulate surface ornamentation. However, depending on the preservation status of the fossils, species differentiation is challenging, therefore the three species were grouped to prevent misidentifications.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/C771742D56315617A3CB51287D6E5E59	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. P. clathrata has a more triangular dorsal edge, when compared with the morphology of P. moenia that displays straight dorsal and ventral margins. Its outline in lateral view is somewhat oblong. Due to individual and age-dependent morphological variability, misidentifications without detailed observation by SEM imaging are possible, therefore the two species were grouped. For the identification of P. inornata, we followed the description by Yasuhara et al. (2014 a), which varies slightly from the original description in respect to lateral ornamentation. The lower-resolution SEMs and type description based thereon, found the valves lacking ornamentation, whereas the modern-day high-resolution SEMs have revealed a weak punctation. All three species are very small with only minor morphological differences, which makes a definite distinction without detailed SEM imaging difficult. Although the genus has frequently been associated with shallow-marine environments and has been used as a sea-ice proxy (Brouwers et al. 2000; Boomer and Eisenhauer 2002; Cronin et al. 2002; Schellenberg 2007), deep-sea representatives have also been reported (e. g., Boomer and Whatley 1995). Nevertheless, the combined evidence of its typical shallow-water affinity, its restriction to interglacial periods in our record, and the depositional setting of this deep-sea site suggests that these specimens are unlikely to represent an in situ deep-water population. Instead, they are interpreted as reworked material transported downslope or delivered by ice rafting, and are therefore considered allochthonous contaminants within the core record.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/4EA627E9AA135E958931D161E3089C53	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
