Geminimyndus spinaparum Bahder, Stroiński & Bartlett, gen. et sp. nov., by present designation.

Etymology. The name ‘ Geminimyndus ’ is derived from the Latin word ‘gemini’ (twins), a reference to the paired processes arising on the phallobase, combined with Myndus, a genus name and common combining form in the tribe. The name is intended as masculine.

Diagnosis. Small planthoppers, sexually dimorphic with females having similar pattern as males only significantly darker in color and degree. Large acrometope present, vertex approximately 3X wide as long at midpoint. Posterior margin of head covering pronotum at midpoint, median carina on frons evident, extending from dorsal margin of acrometope to frontoclypeal suture. Phallobase with paired, large processes arising near anterior margin, one on either side of endosoma and a single, spinose process arising on posterior margin.

Description. Small species, sexually dimorphic with males paler and less patterned, females more fuscous, stronger patterning over body. Forewings weakly to strongly patterned with fuscous patches, patterns stronger in female forewings than males. Head in lateral view rounded, in dorsal view, posterior margin of vertex nearly linear, covering pronotum at midpoint. Frons carinate at midpoint, median ocellus present.

Tegmen membranous, distinctly elongated (longer than wide) and nearly parallel-sided; slight projection at base of costal vein, clavus long; apical margin widely arcuate with breaking point in the middle of margin (about end of MP 1.1). Basal cell very narrow, distinctly longer than wide. Longitudinal veins distinctly visible dotted with pustules bearing setae. Longitudinal veins ScP+R and MP forming short composite stem from basal cell and forking distinctly before fusion of claval vein Pcu and A1; first fork of ScP+R distinctly before of first fork of MP, slightly basad of CuA stem and about at level of fusion of claval veins Pcu+A1; first fork of MP at the level of clavus apex, first fork of CuA a bit after of first fork of SC+R. Forking sequence of longitudinal veins ScP+R→CuA→MP. Branching pattern RA 1-branched, RP 3-branched, MP 5-branched, CuA 2-branched. Cell C5 the longest; cell C3 shortest, cell C1 bit shorter than C5. Cell length sequence C5→C3→C1. Clavus long reaching 2/3 length of wing, fusion of claval vein after half the clavus. Transverse veinlet icu reaching apex of clavus. Hindwing with “I-type” connection between the MP and CuA (Le Cesne et al. 2022).

Medioventral process of pygofer present, rounded at apex with two lateral, subtriangular processes; posteriolateral margins of pygofer subtriangular. Phallobase complex, paired, recurved processes arising at anterior margin and a single process arising on posterior margin, angled caudad; endosoma simple, arising in between paired processes of phallobase, processes asymmetrical in length and curvature.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/417C8787FFA6FF85FF186811FC96FCB2	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. For the novel taxa, sequence data was successfully obtained for all selected markers. Products the size of 315, 529, 633, 1,365, 741 and 795 base pairs (bp) were recovered for the markers H3, COI 5’, COI 3’, 18S, 28S D8 region and 28S D9–D10 region, respectively. All sequences generated for the novel taxa were deposited in GenBank and corresponding accession numbers are presented in Supplementary Table 1.

The phylogeny constructed from concatenated data of all loci showed very strong statistical support (99.6/100) for the monophyly of Geminimyndus gen. nov. and very strong support (100/100) for it resolving adjacent to Eumyndus (Fig. 18).

Remarks. Geminimyndus gen. nov. superficially resembles Eumyndus . Historically, Eumyndus was separated from Myndus by the former lacking a median carina on the frons, whereas Myndus possessed this carina. The presence of this carina in G. perinetensis comb. nov. cast doubt on the validity of this character for defining Eumyndus . However, with the proposed status change for G. perinetensis comb. nov., the presence of a median carina is (thus far) a consistent feature for Geminimyndus gen. nov., and with its removal from Eumyndus, the lack of the carina on the frons is now consistent for Eumyndus . Additionally, all three species of Geminimyndus gen. nov. possess a large acrometope, whereas this is lacking in Eumyndus . Furthermore, the presence of paired processes arising from the phallobase in Geminimyndus gen. nov. is a strong character in contrast to the single process observed in Eumyndus to support the establishment of the genus. Thus far, three species have been observed with paired processes and two species of Eumyndus, both possessing a single process, have been observed, supporting the consistency of this character. This distinction is also strongly supported by molecular data for a variety of molecular markers. While specimens of Myndus for molecular study are lacking, the general structure of the genitalia would suggest it is more closely related to Haplaxius than to either Eumyndus or Geminimyndus gen. nov.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/417C8787FFA8FF8FFF186A7EFB8AFF72	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
