The examination of the type specimens was based solely on what has been observed in photographs and illustrations.

Diagnosis.

This species is closely related to Philippinarus tarandiformis gen. et sp. nov., but the two species can be easily distinguished from each other based on the following characters of the male genitalia: (1) right ventrobasal process of the aedeagus is trifurcate in Philippinarus tarandiformis gen. et sp. nov. (process “ a ” in Fig. 3 A, B), while the same process in Philippinarus granulatus gen. et comb. nov. is bifurcate; (2) medioventral process of aedeagus with simple apex in Ph. tarandiformis gen. et sp. nov. (Fig. 3 D), while in Ph. granulatus gen. et comb. nov. the same process is apically bifurcate; and (3) both apical processes of the aedeagus are covered with small spines in Ph. tarandiformis gen. et sp. nov. (processes “ d ” and “ e ” in Fig. 3 A), while in Ph. granulatus gen. et comb. nov. only the longer apical process is covered with small spines.

Total length. Male: 5.0 mm (N = 1), female: 5.6 mm (N = 1) (after Muir 1924).

Distribution.

Luzon, Philippines.

Remarks.

The species was described by Muir (1924) based on specimens from Luzon, Philippines. Later, Van Stalle (1991) re-examined the type material and provided a lectotype designation and an amended description for the species. Figures of male genitalia were provided by Muir (1924, Pl. 1, fig. 5 a, b) and Van Stalle (1991, figs 562–569), subsequently. The habitus and labels of holotype and allotype are given in Fig. 1, kindly provided by Lisha Jasper (BPBM). Based on the photos and illustrations of the species, we propose that the species should be transferred from Oliarus to Philippinarus gen. nov. based on the above-mentioned generic characters.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/E2D219CB707555AC8954AE5C2173D0FB	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. The name of the new genus is masculine in gender.

Diagnosis.

Philippinarus gen. nov. can be distinguished from other genera of Pentastirini by the wing venation, proportions of the body, shape of hind leg and arrangements of spines of the metatarsi (7 / 7, no platellae) and especially by the configuration of the male genitalia (arrangement of the ventrobasal processes of aedeagus; presence of spiny processes on the flagellum; wide anal segment and unique pygofer processes). Based on the generic concept of Oliarus Stål, 1862 provided by Emeljanov (2001) and later amended by Löcker et al. (2006), these genera can be distinguished from each other based on the number of lateral spines on the hind tibia with three in Philippinarus gen. nov. (only two lateral spines in Oliarus), the chaetotaxy of metatarsomeres which is 7 / 7 in Philippinarus gen. nov. (7–8 (rarely 9) / 5 (rarely 6) in Oliarus) and the general external appearance and wing venation.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/77FF8430F7A15E4194422A11A87C371E	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Therefore, comparisons are limited to characters of the female terminalia and external characters, which makes the comparison difficult. Based on the markings of the forewing and general morphology of the female terminalia, the species is closely related to Pteroprocessus nabhitabhatai gen. et sp. nov. Illustrations of Van Stalle (1991) suggest differences in the basal portion of gonapophysis VIII, as well as the total length of the body. However, the significance of these differences remains uncertain. The identity of P. binghami (Distant, 1911) gen. et comb. nov. can only be resolved through examination of male specimens from the type locality and subsequent comparison of their genital morphology with that of P. nabhitabhatai gen. et sp. nov.

Total length. 18 mm (after Distant 1911, most probably erroneous measurement).

Distribution.

Myanmar, Rangoon.

Remarks.

The species was described by Distant (1911) as Oliarus binghami from Rangoon, Myanmar. Later, Van Stalle (1991) re-examined the type material and provided a lectotype designation and an amended description for the species (Van Stalle 1991, figs 625–628). Recently, Emeljanov (2001) transferred the species to the genus Indolipa Emeljanov, 2001 . Here, based on the figures and description provided by Van Stalle (1991), especially the wing venation and markings as well as the general colouration and morphology of female terminalia, we propose that the species should be transferred from Indolipa to Pteroprocessus gen. nov.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/6ABE2614FFCB5DD4965BCB6236CAA7B1	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Fenestrae and median ocellus well-developed. Epistomal suture convex. Postclypeus slightly narrowing towards anteclypeus; with visible transverse alternating striation; margins slightly elevated. Anteclypeus tapered. Rostrum projects beyond hind coxae. Pedicel large, globular; antennal flagellum thin, moderate in length. Pronotum thin, posterior margin deeply concave; margins elevated; widened behind eyes. Median carina of pronotum distinct. Paranotal lobes large, leaf-shaped, apically tapered, with transverse carina close to apex; margins distinctly elevated. Mesonotum large, almost as long as wide, with five carinae; lateral carinae slightly convex, intermediate carinae incomplete; median carina straight, not reaching tip of scutellum. Scutellum indistinct. Mesonotum in lateral view flattened. Tegulae large, kidney-shaped. Macropterous. Forewings extend the abdomen by an entire length of it. Pterostigma large, elongate, distinct. Forewings with small granules along veins, each bearing small setae. Forewings with moderate size ScP + R, forking into ScP + RA and RP basad of CuA fork; RA with three terminals; RP stem long, ca. 1.6 × as long as ScP + RA stem, with three terminals, RP 2 forking into two branches; ir veinlet present between forking of RA and last terminal of RP, shorter than rp-mp and rp-mp’; rp-mp present between forking of MP and slightly distad of midpoint of RP stem; rp-mp’ present apicad between forking of RP and last terminal of MP 1. M stem very long, forking well distad of ScP + RA and CuA forks, nearly at level of apex of clavus. M with two main branches forking into five terminals, M 1 forking into two branches; two im veinlets present, im’ slightly shorter. CuA stem longer than stem of ScP + R, forking distad of ScP + R, slightly basad of midpoint of MP. CuA 1 and CuA 2 unforked; icua and icu present, icua shorter. Pcu and A 1 fused distad of midpoint of clavus; Pcu + A 1 shorter than A 1, reaching anal margin at almost mid-length of forewing. Forewings with 11 apical and 6 preapical cells. Hindwings with small, barely visible wca; r-m long; m-cua oblique; connection between MP and CuA V-shaped. Hind tibiae with 5–8 conspicuously small lateral spines. First metatarsomeres longer than second, second metatarsomeres longer than third. Metatarsomeres without platellae. Metatibiotarsal formula: 6 / 7 / 5. Claws small, slightly extending arolium. Legs covered with fine setae.

Colouration. Generally brown to yellowish or dark brown to blackish; carinae paler. Pronotum lighter than head and mesonotum. Legs yellowish to brown; spines on legs apically blackish. Forewings semi-transparent with unique markings and colouration; veins and granules brown to black. Hind wings apically fuscous.

Male genitalia. Pygofer narrow, asymmetric laterally, without conspicuous processes. Medioventral process large, longer than wide, tongue-shaped; with a distinct ventral carina and with unique, symmetric or asymmetric ventrolateral appendages. Anal tube slightly or largely asymmetric, distinctly longer than wide, dorsally moderately or distinctly tubularly elevated; paraproct long. Anal tube ventrally with unique lobe. Genital style moderately asymmetric, cane-shaped. Aedeagus with a distinct ventrobasal process “ a ”; shaft thin, without or with processes. Flagellum coiled, with characteristic processes.

Female. Larger than male. Anal segment large and wide, rounded; wax plate laterally thickened. Pregenital sternite excavated medially. Ovipositor orthopteroid-type according to classification by Bourgoin (1993). Gonoplac elongate, triangular, basally broadened. Gonapophysis VIII basally broadened, finger-like, apically filiform; gonapophysis IX filiform.

Distribution.

Thailand: Trang Province; China: Yunnan Province; Myanmar: Rangoon.

Etymology.

The generic name is derived from the Greek pteron (“ wing ”) and the Latin processus (“ process ”), referring to the unique wing-like processes on the medioventral process of the pygofer. The genus name is masculine in gender.

Diagnosis.

Pteroprocessus gen. nov. can be distinguished from other genera of Pentastirini by wing venation, proportions of the body, shape of hind legs and configuration of male genitalia (cane-shaped genital styli; presence of a characteristic ventrobasal process; aedeagal shaft relatively thin, flagellum coiled; pygofer narrow and asymmetric). Arrangements of spines of the metatarsi (7 / 5, no platellae) seem to be common among Oriental Pentastirini, especially Oliarus s. str., however, the conspicuously small lateral spines on the hind tibiae are unique and clearly separate it from the genus Oliarus .

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/1393DDA619455D788E08E9883F29F182	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
