344687B4FFB0FE52FF383AE4FA8B6E91.taxon	conservation	Preliminary conservation assessment. This species is only known from the type, collected in 1935 from eastern Papua New Guinea. Based on this single collection, the Extent of Occurrence (EOO) and Area of Occupancy (AOO) are both estimated as 4 km 2, below the thresholds for Critically Endangered under criteria B 1 and B 2. The type locality is in an area which is a mosaic of land cleared for agriculture and forest, although there are large areas of intact natural habitat within the elevation range of this species in eastern Papua New Guinea which have not been thoroughly explored by botanists, where it may occur. While its apparently highly restricted distribution makes this species vulnerable to stochastic effects, it is difficult to determine if it is experiencing a continuing decline given the lack of data on its current status. If found to be experiencing a continuing decline, this species could qualify as Critically Endangered under criterion B. If, however, it is not found to be threatened at its single known locality, this species would qualify for Least Concern. It is also possible that this species is much more widespread than is currently known, and it may occur at other localities in Papua and New Guinea, or even on nearby islands. As the uncertainty spans the full range of categories, we propose its classification as Data Deficient (DD) following the IUCN (2024) criteria.	en	Fonseca-Cortés, Andrés, Clark, Ruth P., Snak, Cristiane, Queiroz, Luciano Paganucci De (2025): A Taxonomic Revision of Macropsychanthus (Leguminosae-Papilionoideae) Reveals New Species and New Circumscriptions in Southeast Asia and Oceania. 344687B4FFB0FE52FF383AE4FA8B6E91.taxon	discussion	Comments. Macropsychanthus bracteosus is morphologically similar to M. hexander and M. wilsonii, but can be distinguished by differences in distribution, indumentum type and color, bracteole size and keel length. Macropsychanthus bracteosus is currently known only from Papua New Guinea, although it is likely to occur on neighboring islands. Macropsychanthus hexander has a broad distribution across East Asia, Melanesia, and northern Australia. Macropsychanthus wilsonii is primarily found in the Neotropics but also occurs in French Polynesia, Madagascar and the Hawaiian Islands. Macropsychanthus bracteosus is characterized by its villose, fulvous indumentum, in contrast with the fulvous strigose or hirsute indumentum of M. hexander and the dark ferruginous, strigose or hirsute indumentum of M. wilsonii. In addition, the bracteoles of M. bracteosus measure 4 – 5 × 5 – 6 mm, which is larger than those of M. hexander and M. wilsonii (1 – 2 × 1 – 2 mm). The keel petals of M. bracteosus are 18 – 20 mm long, similar to those of M. hexander, but larger than the 7 – 10 mm long keel petals of M. wilsonii.	en	Fonseca-Cortés, Andrés, Clark, Ruth P., Snak, Cristiane, Queiroz, Luciano Paganucci De (2025): A Taxonomic Revision of Macropsychanthus (Leguminosae-Papilionoideae) Reveals New Species and New Circumscriptions in Southeast Asia and Oceania. 344687B4FFB0FE50FF383DB0FE9A6DBA.taxon	conservation	Preliminary conservation assessment. This species is only known from two collections comprising two separate locations on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. The Extent of Occurrence is estimated as 8 - 44 km 2 and the Area of Occupancy (AOO) as 8 km 2, both falling below thresholds for a threatened category under criteria B 1 and B 2 respectively. However, this area has not been intensively explored by botanists and it is possible that this species occurs on other islands, in which case the EOO and AOO could be much larger. Much of the lowland forest on Guadalcanal has been cleared for agriculture, settlements, and plantations (Olson 2025). These threats are inferred to be contributing to a continuing decline in the area, extent, and quality of habitat for this species. Given the available data, we take a precautionary approach here and propose this species is classified as Endangered B 1 ab (iii) + 2 ab (iii) following the IUCN (2024) criteria.	en	Fonseca-Cortés, Andrés, Clark, Ruth P., Snak, Cristiane, Queiroz, Luciano Paganucci De (2025): A Taxonomic Revision of Macropsychanthus (Leguminosae-Papilionoideae) Reveals New Species and New Circumscriptions in Southeast Asia and Oceania. 344687B4FFB0FE50FF383DB0FE9A6DBA.taxon	discussion	Comments. This species is unusual within the genus due to its larger brachyblasts, measuring 4 – 5.5 cm in length, and its bracteoles, which measure 10 – 12 × 8 – 12 mm. Morphologically, it resembles M. carolinensis in the presence of sericeous indumentum on the inflorescence and flower buds, and flowers, which are 4 – 4.5 cm long. However, M. carolinensis differs by having significantly smaller brachyblasts (5 – 17 mm long) and bracteoles (4 – 5 × 5 – 6 mm).	en	Fonseca-Cortés, Andrés, Clark, Ruth P., Snak, Cristiane, Queiroz, Luciano Paganucci De (2025): A Taxonomic Revision of Macropsychanthus (Leguminosae-Papilionoideae) Reveals New Species and New Circumscriptions in Southeast Asia and Oceania. 344687B4FFB2FE5DFF383EA7FF676100.taxon	conservation	Preliminary conservation assessment. The single known collection was made in disturbed lowland forest, and much of the area surrounding the type locality within the elevation range of this species is a mosaic of land cleared for shifting agriculture and secondary forest. However, this species may be able to persist in secondary forest as observed for other species in the genus. While its apparently highly restricted distribution makes this species vulnerable to stochastic effects, it is difficult to determine if it is experiencing a continuing decline given the lack of data on its population status. 344687B4FFB2FE5DFF383EA7FF676100.taxon	discussion	Comments. Macropsychanthus wiakabumba exhibits a distinctive morphology not observed in any other species of Macropsychanthus, particularly in its rugose leaflets with 8 – 11 pairs of secondary veins, very small flowers (1.4 – 1.7 cm long), standard petal 10 – 14 × 6 – 8 mm, wing petals 12 – 14 × 4 – 6 mm, keel petals 12 – 15 × 3 – 6 mm and ten fertile stamens. In vegetative morphology, it resembles M. ferrugineus and M. hexander due to the presence of a hirsute indumentum and a similar number of secondary veins in the leaflets. However, M. hexander is distinguished by its larger flowers (2 – 2.5 cm long), standard petal 17 – 20 × 13 – 17 mm, wing petals 17 – 20 × 7 – 12 mm, keel petals 14 – 18 × 7 – 12 mm, and six fertile stamens and four staminodes. In contrast, M. ferrugineus has flowers measuring 2.5 – 3 cm long, standard petal 25 – 30 × 18 – 22 mm wing petals 25 – 30 × 10 – 12 mm, keel petals 25 – 30 × 10 – 12 mm, and ten fertile stamens.	en	Fonseca-Cortés, Andrés, Clark, Ruth P., Snak, Cristiane, Queiroz, Luciano Paganucci De (2025): A Taxonomic Revision of Macropsychanthus (Leguminosae-Papilionoideae) Reveals New Species and New Circumscriptions in Southeast Asia and Oceania. 344687B4FFBEFE5AFF383CF1FEEF6A84.taxon	conservation	Preliminary conservation assessment. This species is widely distributed across several islands, and has a large Extent of Occurrence (EOO) of 3,924,472 km ², far exceeding the threshold for a threatened category under criterion B 1. Based on herbarium specimen records, the Area of Occupancy (AOO) is estimated as 36 km ². The AOO is likely an underestimate given that botanical collection efforts have been limited in some parts of this species’ range, however it is considered unlikely that the true value exceeds the threshold for a threatened category under criterion B 2. This species is known from nine localities across nine different islands. However, most of the islands that this species has been collected from have large areas of intact forest with no obvious threats. As such, the locations concept cannot be used and the species is not thought to be undergoing a continuing decline. Considering these factors, propose classifying this species as Least Concern (LC), following the IUCN (2024) criteria.	en	Fonseca-Cortés, Andrés, Clark, Ruth P., Snak, Cristiane, Queiroz, Luciano Paganucci De (2025): A Taxonomic Revision of Macropsychanthus (Leguminosae-Papilionoideae) Reveals New Species and New Circumscriptions in Southeast Asia and Oceania. The Extent of Occurrence (EOO) is estimated as 203,329 km 2, which greatly exceeds thresholds for a threatened category under criterion B 1. 344687B4FFBBFE47FF383CE5FE106860.taxon	conservation	Preliminary conservation assessment. This species is only known from three collections, the most recent of which dates from 1953. Two collections are from near Kokoda, where much of the natural habitat within the elevation range of this species has been cleared for agriculture. A third specimen was collected in 1920 somewhere along the Mamberamo River in Papua, however the exact locality is not known. If restricted to a single location in the highly transformed river valley near Kokoda, this species could be threatened with an EOO and AOO as small as 4 - 8 km 2, qualifying for Critically Endangered. However, given the disjunct occurrence in Papua this species could have a much larger range, and may occur in areas of intact lowland forest where botanical collecting efforts have been low, such that it would qualify for Least Concern. 344687B4FFA5FE45FF383BE0FEF568DF.taxon	conservation	Preliminary conservation assessment. The Extent of Occurrence (EOO) is estimated at 15,361,495 km 2, which greatly exceeds thresholds for a threatened category under criterion B 1. The Area of Occupancy (AOO) is estimated as 208 km 2, which would meet the threshold for Endangered (EN) under criterion B 2. However, the AOO should be considered a minimum estimate since botanical collection efforts have been limited in some parts of this species’ range. The species is neither severely fragmented nor undergoing a continuous decline. Furthermore, it is known from many more than ten locations. Considering these factors, we propose classifying this species as Least Concern (LC) following IUCN (2024) criteria.	en	Fonseca-Cortés, Andrés, Clark, Ruth P., Snak, Cristiane, Queiroz, Luciano Paganucci De (2025): A Taxonomic Revision of Macropsychanthus (Leguminosae-Papilionoideae) Reveals New Species and New Circumscriptions in Southeast Asia and Oceania. 344687B4FFA5FE45FF383BE0FEF568DF.taxon	discussion	Comments. Macropsychanthus hexander may be confused with M. wilsonii due to the similar number of secondary veins and the fruit morphology, particularly the pedicel attachment displaced toward the dorsal suture. However, M. hexander is distinguished by its fulvous indumentum, flowers measuring 2 – 2.5 cm long, six fertile stamens and four staminodes, and seeds measuring 3 – 3.5 cm long × 3 – 3.5 cm wide × 1 – 1.5 cm thick. In contrast, M. wilsonii has a dark ferruginous indumentum, smaller flowers (1 – 1.5 cm long), five fertile stamens and five staminodes, and seeds measuring 25 – 30 mm long, 15 – 25 mm wide, 10 – 15 mm thick. Some of the exsiccatae housed in L bear the names Dioclea hexandra var. merrillii Amshoff ex den Hengst, Dioclea hexandra var. javanica (Benth.) den Hengst, Dioclea reflexa var. javanica (Benth.) den Hengst, and Dioclea hexandra var. australiensis Domin. However, none of these names were ever validly published.	en	Fonseca-Cortés, Andrés, Clark, Ruth P., Snak, Cristiane, Queiroz, Luciano Paganucci De (2025): A Taxonomic Revision of Macropsychanthus (Leguminosae-Papilionoideae) Reveals New Species and New Circumscriptions in Southeast Asia and Oceania. 344687B4FFA7FE44FF383B83FD2F6DA4.taxon	conservation	Preliminary conservation assessment. This species is only known from four collections. Based on these specimens, the Extent of Occurrence is estimated as 3,909 km ² and the Area of Occupancy (AOO) as 16 km ², both falling within thresholds for a threatened category under criteria B 1 and B 2 respectively. However, much of this species’ range has not been intensively explored by botanists and it is possible that this species is much more widespread, in which case the EOO and AOO could be much larger. Two collecting localities are in areas where native vegetation appears to be intact, whereas the remaining two are in areas which appear to be largely deforested as a result of agricultural and settlement expansion. This species has been collected both from highlands, which have relatively low levels of deforestation, as well as coastal areas where habitat loss is more substantial. Given that the overall distribution of this species is highly uncertain, it is difficult to determine if this species is undergoing a continuing decline across most of its range. It is not likely to be severely fragmented or subject to extreme fluctuations. We propose its classification as Data Deficient (DD) following the IUCN (2024) criteria.	en	Fonseca-Cortés, Andrés, Clark, Ruth P., Snak, Cristiane, Queiroz, Luciano Paganucci De (2025): A Taxonomic Revision of Macropsychanthus (Leguminosae-Papilionoideae) Reveals New Species and New Circumscriptions in Southeast Asia and Oceania. 344687B4FFA6FE42FF383EACFBE9680C.taxon	conservation	Preliminary conservation assessment. The Extent of Occurrence (EOO) is estimated as 158,048 km 2, which greatly exceeds thresholds for a threatened category under criterion B 1. Based on herbarium specimen records, the Area of Occupancy (AOO) is estimated as 24 km ². The AOO is likely an underestimate given that botanical collection efforts have been limited in some parts of this species’ range, however it is considered unlikely that the true value exceeds the threshold for a threatened category under criterion B 2. It is only known from six locations: most of these are from lowland areas which are threatened by agricultural and settlement expansion and as such, the species is inferred to be undergoing a continuing decline in the area, extent, and quality of habitat. However, the species has also been collected from the interior of Papua New Guinea, where natural habitats are largely intact and botanical sampling efforts have been low. While the species may be more widespread than is currently known, we take a precautionary approach and propose classifying this species as Vulnerable B 2 ab (iii), following the IUCN (2024) criteria.	en	Fonseca-Cortés, Andrés, Clark, Ruth P., Snak, Cristiane, Queiroz, Luciano Paganucci De (2025): A Taxonomic Revision of Macropsychanthus (Leguminosae-Papilionoideae) Reveals New Species and New Circumscriptions in Southeast Asia and Oceania. 344687B4FFA0FE41FF383B54FCC46AA0.taxon	discussion	Comments. Macropsychanthus purpureus can be confused with M. hexander and M. wilsonii due to similar number of secondary veins in their leaflets. However, M. purpureus is characterized by its basifixed triangular stipules (in contrast to the lanceolate medifixed stipules found in the other species) and its minute stipels, which are barely visible to the naked eye (versus clearly visible stipels in M. hexander and M. wilsonii). Furthermore, M. purpureus is the only species of the genus with bilabiate flower calyx, differing from the four- or five-lobed calyx observed in the other species. Additionally, the keel of M. purpureus measures 20 – 25 mm in length, whereas in M. hexander and M. wilsonii the keel ranges from 10 to 18 mm long.	en	Fonseca-Cortés, Andrés, Clark, Ruth P., Snak, Cristiane, Queiroz, Luciano Paganucci De (2025): A Taxonomic Revision of Macropsychanthus (Leguminosae-Papilionoideae) Reveals New Species and New Circumscriptions in Southeast Asia and Oceania. 344687B4FFA3FE40FF3839A0FBEC6860.taxon	conservation	Preliminary conservation assessment. The Extent of Occurrence (EOO) is estimated as 639,904 km ², which greatly exceeds thresholds for a threatened category under criterion B 1. The Area of Occupancy (AOO) is estimated as 56 km ², which meets the threshold for Endangered (EN) under criterion B 2 (AOO <500 km ²). The species is threatened by deforestation due to logging, shifting agriculture, and clearance for settlements (Curtis et al., 2018, Wikramanayake 2025). This threat is inferred to be contributing to a continuing decline in the area and quality of habitat for this species. It is known from 14 locations, barely exceeding the threshold for a threatened category. Since this species nearly meets all of the subcriteria for a threatened category under criterion B 2, but occurs at more than 10 locations, we propose classifying this species as Near Threatened B 2 ab (iii) according to IUCN criteria (2024).	en	Fonseca-Cortés, Andrés, Clark, Ruth P., Snak, Cristiane, Queiroz, Luciano Paganucci De (2025): A Taxonomic Revision of Macropsychanthus (Leguminosae-Papilionoideae) Reveals New Species and New Circumscriptions in Southeast Asia and Oceania. 344687B4FFA3FE40FF3839A0FBEC6860.taxon	discussion	Comments. This species could be confused with M. hexander due to similarities in leaflet morphology, shared indumentum type, and the number of secondary veins. However, M. umbrinus can be distinguished by its canescent indumentum on the inflorescences, smaller flowers (1 – 1.5 cm long), ten fertile stamens, villose pods, and orbicular in outline seeds. In contrast, M. hexander has fulvous indumentum on the inflorescences, larger flowers (2 – 2.5 cm long), six fertile stamens and four staminodes, strigose pods, and laterally compressed, D-shaped seeds.	en	Fonseca-Cortés, Andrés, Clark, Ruth P., Snak, Cristiane, Queiroz, Luciano Paganucci De (2025): A Taxonomic Revision of Macropsychanthus (Leguminosae-Papilionoideae) Reveals New Species and New Circumscriptions in Southeast Asia and Oceania. The Extent of Occurrence (EOO) is estimated as 100,056,497 km 2, which greatly exceeds thresholds for a threatened category under criterion B 1. The Area of Occupancy (AOO) is estimated as 372 km 2. which would meet the threshold for Endangered (EN) under criterion B 2. However, the AOO should be considered a minimum estimate since botanical collection efforts have been limited in some parts of this species’ range. The species is neither severely fragmented nor undergoing a continuous decline. This is supported by its ability to thrive in secondary vegetation. Additionally, the species is known from many more than ten locations and has a wide distribution. Taking these factors into account, we propose classifying this species as Least Concern (LC), following IUCN (2024) criteria.	en	Fonseca-Cortés, Andrés, Clark, Ruth P., Snak, Cristiane, Queiroz, Luciano Paganucci De (2025): A Taxonomic Revision of Macropsychanthus (Leguminosae-Papilionoideae) Reveals New Species and New Circumscriptions in Southeast Asia and Oceania.
