Body small for the genus, elongate, not distinctly convex, flattened medially; surface matt; apparently glabrous, all longitudinal costae and intercostae on pronotum and elytra with rows of very small, yellowish macrosetae. Brownish-black; antennae, tarsomeres and mouth-parts orange. Body covered by dust-like tarnish. Head (Fig. 1 D) transversely sub-hexagonal; weakly shiny, clypeus trapezoidal in outline, anteriorly truncate, on each side upturned as obtuse tooth, laterally sinuous; genae distinctly more excavate than eyes; clypeocentral disc distinctly convex, ringed by a shallow, but distinct peridiscal impression; convexity with a pair of small, weakly developed costae. Frons with four distinct, longitudinal costae with similar structure as costae on clypeal convexity. Head covered by regularly spaced, dense, not coarse punctures bearing short macrosetae. Pronotum matt, top of costae moderately shiny; with eight distinct costae and seven intercostae, lateral margin with two relatively low, triangular lobes. Anterior lobe wider than higher, less prominent laterally and distinctly narrower than median lobe; median lobe widely rounded, median lobes are the widest part of the pronotum. Paramedian, submarginal and marginal pairs of costae entire from posterior to anterior margins; discolateral costae distinctly interrupted in anterior half; paramedian costae nearly paralel; all costae on each side with very small punctures bearing very small macrosetae. Third intercostae anteriorly without additional costae. Median intercostae anteriorly with very dense, coarse punctation; all intercostae with very dense, coarse punctation posteriorly. Scutellum almost imperceptible. Elytra matt, tops of costae and preapical glandular area moderately shiny. Each elytron with six elevated, distinctly convex costae, and five flat intercostae. Costae on sides with very small punctures bearing very small setae. Intercostae 1 – 4 with two distinct rows of large punctures, intercostae 5 one row of large punctuers; intercostae 1 – 3 basally with few very short additional rows, represented at most by few punctures. Preapical glandular area relatively small. External caudal bulb indistinct, area between external caudal bulb and sides of elytra not divided; external and median caudal bulbs very weakly divided; median and internal caudal bulbs clearly not divided, transverse. Macropterous. Pygidium with dense, quite regularly spaced punctation, with two distinct longitudinal carina anteriorly connected into one posteriorly, with deep excision on each side. Venter (Fig. 1 B) weakly shiny. Metaventral plate flattened in the middle; with distinct, wide, deep, median longitudinal furrow; punctation of plate dense, deep, moderately coarse, regularly spaced, slightly irregular in size; all punctures bearing short setae. Abdominal ventrites weakly shiny, with dense punctation bearing long and thin setae; with an additional very coarsely punctured furrow on anterior margin. Meso- and metafemora without tubercles on posterior border, all bisinuate in the middle; all femora weakly shiny, with regular, very distinct, moderately coarse, dense punctation; all punctures bearing thin macrosetae. Meso- and metatibiae with inner margin regularly rounded entire length to a large inner apical tooth. Variation. Body length 4.8 – 5.4 mm. Punctation of pronotum is weakly variable in density. Caudal bulbs can be slightly more or less distinctly developed. Sexual dimorphism. Typical for the genus are differences in the shape of the last abdominal ventrite and the shape of the meso- and metatibiae. Males with last abdominal ventrite medially somewhat raised, with punctation slightly denser here and meso- and metatibiae internally more sinuate, bearing large, flattened, inwardly bent apical spine. Aedeagus (Fig. 2 E) moderately long and weakly but clearly curved in lateral view.	en	Minkina, Łukasz (2026): Studies on the genus Rhyparus Westwood, 1845 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Aphodiinae) with description of five new species from Southeast Asia. 362687F93948FFC2FF395DA3FC111034.taxon	diagnosis	Differential diagnosis. Rhyparus banyuwangiensis Minkina, sp. nov. due to: small size for the genus (body length less than 5.5 mm), elongate body, weakly developed lateral lobes of pronotum, elytral intercostae in the middle of the length with two rows of punctures, weakly developed caudal bulbs, sexual dimorphism characteristic for the genus is similar only to R. obsoletus Fairmaire, 1893 (Fig. 6 C) and R. danielssoni Bordat, 1996 (Fig. 3 C). Rhyparus obsoletus is only known from the island of Java, and has even less distinctly developed lateral lobes of the pronotum, pronotal intercostae posteriorly almost without punctation (compare Figs 10 A with 10 J) and a slightly different shape of the connections between the caudal bulbs. In both species the transition between the external caudal bulbs and the sides of elytra is missing, but in R. obsoletus the external caudal bulbs seems to be somewhat prominent; sinuation between external and median is more distinct in R. obsoletus (compare Figs. 11 A with 11 J). Rhyparus danielssoni is only known from the island of Borneo, and has a less elongated body, more distinct lateral lobes of the pronotum, less dense punctation of the pronotal intercostae (compare Figs. 10 A with 10 E), median and internal caudal bulbs fused, more distinct, much more transverse (compare Figs. 10 A with 11 E). Small specimens of R. verrucosus Schmidt, 1916 (Fig. 9 C), can be somewhat similar and can be collected together with the new species. However, the smallest specimens of R. verrucosus are still much larger than the largest specimens of R. banyuwangiensis Minkina, sp. nov. Additionaly R. banyuwangiensis Minkina, sp. nov., have more distinct lateral lobes of the pronotum and the punctation of the second and third intercostae of the pronotum is much sparser posteriorly, with only a few punctures (compare Figs. 10 A and 10 N).	en	Minkina, Łukasz (2026): Studies on the genus Rhyparus Westwood, 1845 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Aphodiinae) with description of five new species from Southeast Asia. 362687F93948FFC2FF395DA3FC111034.taxon	discussion	Comment. For formal reasons, a female is chosen as the holotype. The species belongs to a group in which the sex of the specimens is irrelevant for identification. In addition, there are two males in the type series: one lacks a locality label, and the other is badly damaged. Nevertheless, images of the first male are provided (Figs. 2 A – E) to show the body and the variability of tarnish (which is often related to dust contamination). This species was confused with R. obsoletus in the old collections.	en	Minkina, Łukasz (2026): Studies on the genus Rhyparus Westwood, 1845 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Aphodiinae) with description of five new species from Southeast Asia. 362687F9394FFFC6FF395EC2FDAC1114.taxon	description	Variation of examined specimens. Length 7.2 – 8.5 mm. Punctation of the anterior part of the pronotum can be more or less dense. Caudal bulbs of elytra are usually as in the specimen shown in Fig. 3 with the internal bulb more distinct, due to the medio- internal caudal bulb being somewhat diagonally transverse. However in some of the specimens these bulbs are more like typical R. breviceps with the internal bulb not so distinct, due to the medio-internal caudal bulb being transverse. For comparison see Fig. 28 in Skelley & Minkina (2025) and Fig. 1 A in Minkina et al. (2025).	en	Minkina, Łukasz (2026): Studies on the genus Rhyparus Westwood, 1845 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Aphodiinae) with description of five new species from Southeast Asia. 362687F9394FFFC6FF395EC2FDAC1114.taxon	discussion	Comment. Rhyparus breviceps is known from Papua New Guinea (Paulian 1984; Stebnicka 1998; Mencl et al. 2013), Solomon Islands (Minkina et al. 2025) and American Samoa (Skelley & Minkina 2025). This the is first record for the island of Sulawesi. Specimens from the island of Sulawesi usually have a somewhat coarser pronotal punctation (compare Figs 10 B with 10 C) and caudal bulbs somewhat more obliquely transverse than specimens from other regions (compare Figs 11 B with 11 C). The differences are slight – but sometimes very clearly visible (like on Fig. 3 A) – that may suggest the population may be another species or subspecies. However, within the population from Sulawesi there are specimens with identical caudal bulbs as specimens from other populations — and it is not possible to distinguish them. However, this problem requires study of additional specimens from different regions of the island. It would be also good to determine the genetic distance between the populations on the island and in other regions. Specimens of R. breviceps were identified by Edelman and Krikken as [R. callosus] and [R. besar] (unpublished manuscript names).	en	Minkina, Łukasz (2026): Studies on the genus Rhyparus Westwood, 1845 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Aphodiinae) with description of five new species from Southeast Asia. 362687F9394FFFC7FF3958F6FEB51098.taxon	diagnosis	Differential diagnosis. Rhyparus crockerrangensis Minkina, sp. nov. can be distinguished from all known Rhyparus species by the following set of characters: small body size (body length less than 5.0 mm), with moderately elongate body, distinctly developed lateral lobes of the pronotum, with the anterior lobe higher, not so densely punctation in the posterior half of the pronotum (especially on the median intercosta), elytral intercostae 1 – 2 and 4 with two rows of punctures, intercostae 3 with three rows of punctures, caudal bulbs distinctly developed, with distinct sinuation between external with median and median with internal bulbs. Rhyparus crockerrangensis Minkina, sp. nov. can be classified as a member of the helophoroides species group due to the relatively small body size, the moderately elongated body, the distinctly developed lateral lobes of the pronotum and less dense punctation in the posterior half of pronotum. Among this group, the only similar species is R. borneensis Minkina & Jákl, 2024. The more sparsely distributed punctation in the posterior half of the pronotum of R. crockerrangensis Minkina, sp. nov. is somewhat similar to R. helophoroides Fairmaire, 1893, yet the pattern of punctation is different between the two species. Rhyparus crockerrangensis Minkina, sp. nov. can be easily distinguished from all species of the helophoroides group by three rows of punctures in the third elytral intercostae (all other species have two rows of punctures).	en	Minkina, Łukasz (2026): Studies on the genus Rhyparus Westwood, 1845 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Aphodiinae) with description of five new species from Southeast Asia. 362687F93943FFCCFF395EC2FB9E1694.taxon	description	Description of the holotype (male). Dorsum (Fig. 5 A). Body length 3.7 mm; maximum width 1.20 mm. Body small for the genus, quite distinctly elongate, not distinctly convex, flattened medially; surface matt; apparently glabrous, all longitudinal costae and intercostae on pronotum and elytra with rows of very small, yellowish macrosetae. Reddish-brown; antennae, tarsomeres and mouth-parts orange. Head (Fig. 5 D) transversely sub-hexagonal; weakly shiny, clypeus trapezoidal in outline, anteriorly widely sinuate, on each side upturned as obtuse tooth, laterally sinuous; genae distinctly more excavate than eyes; clypeocentral disc distinctly convex, ringed by a shallow, indistinct peridiscal impression; convexity with a pair of very small, weakly developed costae. Frons with four indistinct, longitudinal costae with similar structure as costae on clypeal convexity. Head covered by regularly spaced, dense, moderately coarse punctures bearing short macrosetae. Pronotum matt, tops of costae moderately shiny; with eight distinct costae and seven intercostae, lateral margin with two triangular lobes. Anterior lobe wider than high, less prominent laterally and distinctly narrower than median lobe; median lobe widely rounded, is the widest part of the pronotum. Submarginal and marginal pairs of costae entire from posterior to anterior margins; paramedian pair of costae distinctly lower and somewhat blurred in anterior half, discolateral pair of costae distinctly interrupted in anterior half; paramedian costae parallel to each other; all costae on each side with very small punctures bearing very small macrosetae. Third intercostae anteriorly without additional costae. Median intercostae anteriorly with dense, moderately coarse punctation; all intercostae with dense, moderately coarse punctation posteriorly. Scutellum almost imperceptible. Elytra matt, tops of costae and preapical glandular area moderately shiny. Each elytron with six elevated, distinctly convex costae, and five flat intercostae. Costae on sides with very small punctures bearing very small setae. Intercostae 1 – 4 with two distinct rows of large punctures, intercostae 5 one row of large punctuers. Preapical glandular area relatively small. External caudal bulb indistinct, area between external caudal bulb and sides of elytra not divided; external and median caudal bulbs very weakly divided; median and internal caudal bulbs clearly not divided. Macropterous. Pygidium with dense, irregularly spaced punctation, with two distinct longitudinal carina anteriorly connected into one posteriorly, with deep excision on each side. Venter (Fig. 5 B) weakly shiny. Metaventral plate flattened in the middle; with distinct, wide, quite deep, median longitudinal furrow; punctation plate dense, shallow, regularly spaced, slightly irregular in size; all punctures bearing short setae. Abdominal ventrites weakly shiny, with dense punctation bearing long and thin setae; with an additional coarsely punctured furrow on anterior margin. Meso- and metafemora without tubercles on posterior border, all widened in the middle; all femora weakly shiny, with regular, very distinct, moderately large, dense punctation; all punctures bearing thin macrosetae. Meso- and metatibiae with inner margin regularly rounded entire length to a large inner apical tooth. Aedeagus (Fig. 5 E) relatively short and clearly curved in lateral view. Variation. Body length 3.6 – 5.1 mm. The punctation of the pronotum can be more or less coarse – usually moderately coarse, rarely coarse; sometimes the punctation in the middle of the pronotum is less coarse or even absent – which looks very different when the punctation of the pronotum is coarse. Caudal bulbs can be slightly more or less distinctly developed. Sexual dimorphism. Typical for the genus are differences in the shape of the last abdominal ventrite and the shape of the meso- and metatibiae. Males with last abdominal ventrite medially somewhat raised, with punctation slightly denser here and meso- and metatibiae internally more sinuate, bearing large, flattened, inwardly bent apical spine.	en	Minkina, Łukasz (2026): Studies on the genus Rhyparus Westwood, 1845 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Aphodiinae) with description of five new species from Southeast Asia. 362687F93943FFCCFF395EC2FB9E1694.taxon	diagnosis	Differential diagnosis. Rhyparus edelmani Minkina, sp. nov. has characteristics that lie between many species and groups of species. It is a small species (body length at most 5.1 mm), with reduced caudal bulbs (sinuation between external and median caudal bulbs is very small and only slightly pronounced), and densely and regularly punctated intercostae of the pronotum and characteristic lateral lobes of pronotum (see description and figures). The body proportions combined with the shape of the caudal bulbs make this species similar to the members of the group in which the females have a modified last abdominal ventrite and pygidium – but R. edelmani Minkina, sp. nov. has a sexual dimorphism typical of the genus and is much smaller than all known species of the group. The regular, moderately coarse punctation of the pronotum combined with shape of the caudal bulbs makes R. edelmani Minkina, sp. nov. similar to R. banyuwangiensis Minkina, sp. nov. (Figs. 1 A, 2 A), R. ironensis Stebnicka & Howden, 1996 (Fig. 6 A), R. striatus Arrow, 1935 and R. sepikensis Stebnicka, 1998 (Fig. 9 A). But all of these are more distinctly elongate, have different, less distinctly developed lateral lobes of the pronotum and all pronotal and elytral costae are lower and wider (compare Figs. 10 F with 10 H and 10 L). The lateral lobes of the pronotum combined with the shape of the caudal bulbs make R. edelmani Minkina, sp. nov. similar (and probably most closely related) to R. danielssoni Bordat, 1996 (Fig. 3 C) and R. xanthi Frivaldszky, 1883 (Fig. 9 D). But in R. edelmani Minkina, sp. nov. the punctation of the pronotum is different (finer than in R. danielssoni (compare Figs. 10 F with 10 E); coarser than in R. xanthi (compare Figs. 10 F with 10 O), the costae on the head are less distinctly developed, sinuation between external and median elytral caudal bulbs are small but clearly visible (similar in R. daniellsoni (compare Figs. 11 F with 11 E), absent in R. xanthi (compare Figs. 11 F with 11 D )) and pronotal median lateral lobe is much clearly wider (much wider than in R. danielssoni (compare Figs. 10 F with 10 E); similar in R. xanthi (compare Figs. 10 F with 10 O),). The size of the body and the weakly developed caudal bulbs make R. edelmani Minkina, sp. nov. are similar to the helophoroides species group, but R. edelmani Minkina sp. nov. has a different shape of the lateral lobes of the pronotum (wider and rounded at apex). The features that lie between several species make this species useful for establishing relationships between groups.	en	Minkina, Łukasz (2026): Studies on the genus Rhyparus Westwood, 1845 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Aphodiinae) with description of five new species from Southeast Asia. 362687F93943FFCCFF395EC2FB9E1694.taxon	discussion	Comment. To show how variable the pronotal punctation can be in R. edelmani Minkina, sp. nov., I present a photo of a paratype with distinctly coarse pronotal punctation and lack punctation in the middle part (Fig. 3 D). The sex was only analyzed in some of the specimens when the meso- and metatibae were visible without repreparation. Specimens showing a range of variation in R. edelmani Minkina, sp. nov., were named by Edelman and Krikken as [R. bone], [R. dumoga], [R. kecil] and [R. politus] (unpublished manuscript names).	en	Minkina, Łukasz (2026): Studies on the genus Rhyparus Westwood, 1845 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Aphodiinae) with description of five new species from Southeast Asia. 362687F93945FFCFFF395C77FDBA1248.taxon	diagnosis	Differential diagnosis. Rhyparus halmaheraensis Minkina, sp. nov. can only be confused with R. jakli Minkina & Anichtchenko, 2022 (Fig. 6 B), due to the large body size for the genus (more than 6.0 mm), elytral intercostae 1 – 4 with two rows of punctres, external caudal bulb is clearly divided from the median bulb, which is poorly or not divided from the internal bulb and all intercostae of the pronotum have dense punctation posteriorly. Rhyparus halmaheraensis Minkina, sp. nov. can be distinguished from R. jakli by the following characters: smaller body size (length 6.8 vs 8.4 mm), the punctation of the pronotum is much less dense and coarser (compare Figs 10 G with 10 I), the shape of caudal bulbs (external caudal bulb more clearly separated from the sides of the elytra and from the median caudal bulb, median and internal bulbs are positioned more laterally, both together are broader) (compare Figs 11 G with 11 I), the last abdominal ventrites of the males are different (in R. halmaheraensis Minkina, sp. nov. are clearly not modified, in R. jakli there is a plate in the form of an inverted triangle (compare Figs. 10 O with 10 P). However, there are three other similar species (R. breviceps Paulian, 1984 (Fig. 3 A), R. burckhardti Paulian, 1989 (Fig. 3 B) and R. schoolmeestersi Ochi, Kon & Kawahara, 2018 (Fig. 6 D )) which have similar body proportions, a similar body size, similar coarseness and density of the punctation of the pronotum (compare Figs. 10 G with 10 B – D and 10 K), slightly similar caudal bulbs (compare Figs. 11 G with 11 B – D and 11 K) and last abdominal ventrite of the males. All are very easily distinguished by the punctation of the posterior half of the pronotum, which is only present in the median intercostae. Additionally, R. burckhardti and R. schoolmeestersi have caudal bulbs different despite its similarity (different projection of medio-internal caudal bulbs and sinuation between medio-internal and external caudal bulbs wide-angle).	en	Minkina, Łukasz (2026): Studies on the genus Rhyparus Westwood, 1845 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Aphodiinae) with description of five new species from Southeast Asia. 362687F93946FFD3FF395B0BFDA1123C.taxon	description	Description of the holotype (male). Dorsum (Fig. 8 A). Body length 3.9 mm; maximum width 1.40 mm. Body small for the genus, moderately elongate, not distinctly convex, flattened medially; surface matt; apparently glabrous, all longitudinal costae and intercostae on pronotum and elytra with rows of very small, yellowish macrosetae. Brownish; antennae, tarsomeres and mouth-parts orange. Head (Fig. 8 D) transversely sub-hexagonal; weakly shiny, clypeus trapezoidal in outline, anteriorly truncate, on each side upturned as obtuse tooth, laterally sinuous; genae distinctly more excavate than eyes; clypeal disc distinctly convex, ringed by a shallow, but distinct peridiscal impression; convexity with a pair of very small, weakly developed costae. Frons with four distinct, longitudinal costae with similar structure as costae on clypeal convexity. Head covered by regularly spaced, dense, coarse punctures bearing short macrosetae. Pronotum matt, tops of costae moderately shiny; with eight distinct costae and seven intercostae, lateral margin with two triangular lobes. Anterior lobe as wide as high, as prominent laterally and distinctly narrower than median lobe; median lobe traingular with rounded apex, both lobes are the widest part of the pronotum. Submarginal and marginal pairs of costae entire from posterior to anterior margins; paramedian pair of costae distinctly lower and somewhat blurred in anterior half, discolateral pair of costae distinctly interrupted in anterior half; paramedian costae weakly convergent; all costae on each side with very small punctures bearing very small macrosetae. Third intercostae anteriorly without additional costae. Median intercostae anteriorly with dense, coarse punctation; all intercostae with dense, coarse punctation posteriorly. External caudal bulb indistinct, area between external caudal bulb and sides of elytra not divided; external and median caudal bulbs weakly divided; median and internal caudal bulbs clearly not divided, transverse. Macropterous. Pygidium with dense, irregularly spaced punctation, with two distinct longitudinal carina anteriorly connected into one posteriorly, with deep excision on each side. Venter (Fig. 8 B) weakly shiny. Metaventral plate flattened in the middle; with distinct, wide, quite deep, median longitudinal furrow; punctation plate dense, deep, coarse, regularly spaced, slightly irregular in size; all punctures bearing short setae. Abdominal ventrites weakly shiny, with dense punctation bearing long and thin setae; with an additional very coarsely punctured furrow on anterior margin. Meso – and metafemora without tubercles on posterior border, all widened in the middle; all femora weakly shiny, with regular, very distinct, moderately coarse, dense punctation; all punctures bearing thin macrosetae. Meso – and metatibiae with inner margin regularly rounded entire length to a large inner apical tooth. Aedeagus (Fig. 8 E) moderately long and clearly curved in lateral view. Variation. Body length 3.4 – 4.9 mm. The caudal bulbs may be slightly more or less distinctly developed. 362687F93946FFD3FF395B0BFDA1123C.taxon	diagnosis	Differential diagnosis. Rhyparus krikkeni Minkina, sp. nov. can be classified in the helophoroides species group due to its small size for the genus (body length less than 5.0 mm), body moderately elongated, distinctly developed lateral lobes of the pronotum, and weakly developed caudal bulbs. It is easily distinguished from all species of the group by: a very dense, coarse and regularly distributed punctation in the posterior part of all pronotal intercostae.	en	Minkina, Łukasz (2026): Studies on the genus Rhyparus Westwood, 1845 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Aphodiinae) with description of five new species from Southeast Asia.
