2D0387E5FFC3F176FF6EA6CBFB24A11E.taxon	etymology	Etymology. The generic epithet is a contraction of Afrotropical, referring to the biogeographical realm from which the genus originates, and Textrix Sundevall, 1833, the nominative genus of the tribe Textricini, to which the new genus belongs. The gender is feminine.	en	Haddad, Charles R., Zamani, Alireza, Marusik, Yuri M. 2D0387E5FFC3F176FF6EA6CBFB24A11E.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis. Species of Afrotrix gen. nov. can be distinguished from those of the four other genera of Textricini (i. e., Anatextrix Kaya et al., 2023, Lycosoides Lucas, 1846, Maimuna Lehtinen, 1967 and Textrix) by the procurved posterior eye row (vs recurved). The new genus differs from all other South African agelenid genera by males having a femoral apophysis on the palp (Fig. 6 E). Furthermore, the males of Afrotrix gen. nov. differ from those of Benoitia, the predominant genus in South African biotopes, by the presence of a distal femoral apophysis on the palp (vs unmodified), thicker palpal femur, a flattened triangular retrolateral tibial apophysis in lateral view (vs spike-like), and a complex conductor with two or three pointed arms (vs twisted conductor with bilobed arms) (cf. Figs 6 H, I, 8 A – D and 21). The females can be distinguished from those of Benoitia by the broad epigynal fovea with a large median atrium (vs median fovea), copulatory openings in lateral margins of fovea (vs posteriorly in fovea) and the very short copulatory ducts (vs. long, looping ducts) (cf. Figs 7 A – C and 19 A – C). They also differ from Namagelena gen. nov., which are similar in size, by males having a smaller conductor with two or three distal arms (vs massive and with a rounded tip; cf. Figs 6 H, I, 8 A – D and 25 B – F) and females by the secondary spermathecae being considerably smaller than the primary spermathecae (vice versa in Namagelena gen. nov.; cf. Figs 7 A – C and 21 E, G).	en	Haddad, Charles R., Zamani, Alireza, Marusik, Yuri M. 2D0387E5FFD0F16EFF6EA3B2FE6AA0FB.taxon	discussion	Remarks. In the original description of the species, Simon (1910) described both sexes and mentioned material from three localities: Kamaggas (= Komaggas) in the Northern Cape, South Africa, and Keetmanshoop and Salem in Namibia. Part of the “ type series ” in the ZMB contains four adult females and many immature specimens, but none of the females are in a good enough condition for a proper redescription to be presented here. The remaining syntypes (female and male from Namibia) were deposited in the Museum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris, France (MNHN, bottle 1943, vial 16951) and examined by Levy (1996), but he did not redescribe or illustrate either sex, complicating recognition of the species, particularly the males. Furthermore, these specimens could not be located in the MNHN collection (K. Privet & E. - A. Leguin, pers. comm.) and were evidently not returned by Levy, and they may possibly be lost. We designate a female lectotype and female paralectotype (from Komaggas) to ensure nomenclatural stability and image the lectotype specimen and its genitalia here (Figs 1 C, 7 G, H). The species should be redescribed once fresh material can be collected from the type locality. Furthermore, the ZMB label data and database information is confusing for several reasons. Of these vials, only the specimens from Keetmanshoop were seemingly mentioned in the original description, which mentions none from either Souelti or Kalahari. Vials 35031 and 35034 have subadult males much larger than those females, so it is unlikely that those specimens are conspecific. Rather, the subadult males likely belong to Benoitia, which are considerably larger than species belonging to Afrotrix gen. nov. The location Souelti could not be traced in either South Africa, Namibia or Botswana, or indeed, globally in the Global Gazetteer v 2.3 (www. fallingrain. com / world); therefore, what this refers to is unclear, although the label of one of the records in ZMB indicates that the specimen is from S. Africa (South Africa). Furthermore, the Kalahari Desert spans parts of South Africa, Namibia and Botswana; therefore, the country in which those specimens were collected in is unclear. However, the type locality of the species should at least be fixed to Komaggas in South Africa, as this is the first-mentioned locality in the description of the species. In addition, no specimens from Salem in Namibia were found in the ZMB, although Levy (1995) indicated that the MNHN syntypes he examined were from Namibia, with no locality specified.	en	Haddad, Charles R., Zamani, Alireza, Marusik, Yuri M. 2D0387E5FFD0F16EFF6EA3B2FE6AA0FB.taxon	distribution	Distribution. Considering the relatively restricted distribution of most species of Afrotrix gen. nov. described in this paper (Fig. 17 B, C), we consider it unlikely that the Namibian specimens listed by Simon (1910) are conspecific with those described from Komaggas. Clarifying their identity will require examination of more recently collected material from Namibia.	en	Haddad, Charles R., Zamani, Alireza, Marusik, Yuri M. Females of A. karooica sp. nov. are most similar to those of A. sauria sp. nov., A. spicula sp. nov. and A. goegap sp. nov. by having semi-circular atria (AT) resembling opposing semi-ovals, but it can be separated by the secondary spermathecae (ST II) being considerably larger than the anterior part of the primary spermathecae (ST I) (vs subequal or only slightly larger) and by the slightly posteriorly diverging ridges along the middle of the AT (vs hourglass-shaped, absent or with only oblique ridges, respectively) (cf. 2D0387E5FFD9F165FF6EA71BFBCEA11A.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis. Females of A. spicula sp. nov. are similar to those of A. sauria sp. nov., A. goegap sp. nov. and A. karooica sp. nov. in having a semi-circular atrium, but it differs from them by having the posterior part of the atrium adjacent to the epigastric fold (vs clearly separated) and the primary spermathecae (ST I) displaced anteriorly from the posterior margin of the atrium (vs extending beyond the posterior margin) (cf. Figs 14 A – C with 7 I – K and 10 A – C, J – L). Further, they differ from A. deserticola (sympatric at its type locality, Komaggas) by the clearly smaller secondary spermathecae and larger ST I (cf. Figs 14 A – C and 7 G). Males of A. spicula sp. nov. can be easily distinguished from congeners by the greatly enlarged, spike-like retrolateral prong of the conductor, which is longer than the palpal tibia (vs shorter), and the femoral apophysis that is located near the middle part of the segment (0.56 vs> 0.7) (Fig. 15).	en	Haddad, Charles R., Zamani, Alireza, Marusik, Yuri M. 2D0387E5FFDFF161FF6EA3FAFD0DA310.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Lehtinen (1967) designated the East African Agelena bornemiszai Caporiacco, 1947 as the type species of Benoitia when he described the genus and transferred three additional African species to it (i. e., A. raymondeae Lessert, 1915; A. rhodesiae Pocock, 1901; A. upembana Roewer, 1955). He diagnosed the genus in his tabulated comparison of the characteristics of Agelenini genera. Subsequently, Levy (1996) provided a textual diagnosis of Benoitia, comparing it with Agelena, and transferred two additional species from North Africa and the Middle East (i. e., A. lepida O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1876 and A. timida (Audouin, 1826 )) and two from southern Africa (i. e., A. deserticola Simon, 1910 and A. ocellata Pocock, 1900) to the genus. Although he illustrated the male and female syntypes of B. ocellata, no figures were presented for B. deserticola, despite him examining the syntypes. The species is illustrated here for the first time and transferred to Afrotrix gen. nov. (see A. deserticola comb. nov. above). The identity of B. rhodesiae remains unclear, as it has never been illustrated. Two Palaearctic species were later transferred to Benoitia (Song et al. 1999; Zamani & Marusik 2020), bringing the total number of species in the genus to 10. Here, we describe five additional new species.	en	Haddad, Charles R., Zamani, Alireza, Marusik, Yuri M. Large to very large spiders; colulus a paired hairy plate; posterior lateral spinnerets with the apical segment 2 – 2.5 × longer than the basal segment; carapace pattern including three light bands; AME> PME; MOQ long rectangular; fovea very long and rather deep; chelicerae with two retromarginal and three promarginal teeth; labium wider than long; abdominal pattern including a light band; tibial and metatarsal spines 2 + 3 [this was found to vary between species and leg number, and therefore does not represent a consistent or reliable diagnostic trait]; tarsal spines absent [however, we found spines on ta III and IV of all species reported here]; palp with long cymbial apex; tibia with ventral carina [considered a short slender ventral apical RTA in the two species’ males reported here]; palpal patella with two small apical processes; embolus originating basally, forming a large coil; primary conductor the functional conductor, a large screw; median apophysis small and membranous; fulcrum (terminal apophysis) partly fused to conductor; epigynal pit paired epigynal foveae; epigynal plate forming caudally tapering septum; lateral teeth forming rounded lobes. Additional characters from Levy (1996): Agelenids with a carapace shape, eye arrangement and proportional eye sizes similar to Agelena; MOQ wider posteriorly than anteriorly, or sometimes subequal; clypeus relatively high, 1.5 × to> 2.5 × the AME diameter; fourth pair of legs longest, second pair shortest. Benoitia species are easily distinguished from other agelenids by the male palps with a turbinate conductor and apical membranous lamella; leg spination of each species presented in Table 3.	en	Haddad, Charles R., Zamani, Alireza, Marusik, Yuri M. 2D0387E5FFE9F155FF6EA24BFCEEA3C0.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis. Females of Namagelena gen. nov. differ from Afrotrix gen. nov. by the longitudinally orientated spermathecae that run more or less parallel with the body axis and the secondary spermathecae (ST II) that are larger than the primary spermathecae (ST I) (vs ST I diverging posteriorly and clearly larger than the ST II) (Fig. 24 C – G). Males of the new genus differ from Agelena Walckenaer, 1805 by the long coiling embolus (EM) originating at the retrolateral side and the huge, strongly sclerotized conductor (CON) that is longer than the tegulum (Fig. 25 B – F) vs a prolaterally originating EM that does not form coils and the CON shorter than the tegulum (Almquist 2006: fig. 251 b – d). It also differs from Benoitia by having a long and coiled EM (vs long but not coiled), the lack of a tegular apophysis (TA) (vs membranous TA present), and the single rather than bifid patellar apophysis (PA) (cf. Figs 25 B – F and 21). Males can be distinguished from Afrotrix gen. nov. by the lack of a femoral apophysis, the presence of one rather than two PA, and by the long EM originating retrolaterally (vs short and originating prolaterally) (cf. Figs 25 B – F and 8). The male of Namagelena gen. nov. shares with some Ageleradix Xu & Li, 2007 a massive CON, but they differ by having a PA (vs absent), palpal tibia being wider than long (vs longer than wide), and the longer coiled EM that curves clockwise in the left palp (vs short, not coiled and curving anticlockwise) (cf. Fig. 25 B – F and Xu & Li 2007: figs 3 – 5).	en	Haddad, Charles R., Zamani, Alireza, Marusik, Yuri M.
