Therefore, the male sexual characters of this species have remained unknown until now. Topotypical and near-topotypical specimens from Mallorca and surrounding islets (i. e., Dragonera and Cabrera islands), and Menorca, have been examined and a male specimen (4.4 mm in length) collected at the type locality has been fully illustrated. In addition, specimens from various cavities in the Iberian Peninsula, mainly from the Levantine region and Andalusia, have been examined. They exhibit slight morphological differences, mainly in the number and shape of the tergal scale-setae, a character that varies with the size (i. e. age) of the specimens. Anaphiloscia simoni shows sexual dimorphism on the fifth segment of the antennal peduncle, which is slightly thicker in adult males (Fig. 2 G, H), whereas no differences have been observed in the pereopods. In immature individuals, the fifth peduncular article of the antenna is swollen both in males and females.

Male specimens of A. simoni were also compared with the published illustrations of the male of A. sicula . The specimen illustrated by Arcangeli (1934) is clearly an immature individual, measuring less than 2 mm, according to the stated magnification. According to the original description, A. sicula is distinguished from A. simoni only by having four penicils on the left mandible instead of three, and three versus four antennular aesthetascs (identical in shape and arrangement), as well as other minor details that may be related to growth. The shape of the male pleopods and mouthparts is identical in both species (note, for example, the outline of the maxilliped endite, the maxilla lobes, and the maxillular teeth). Therefore, A. sicula is proposed as a junior subjective synonym of A. simoni .

The specimens from Portugal studied by Vandel (1946), also identified as A. sicula, apparently exhibit some notable differences, such as the composition of the antennula, the dactylar morphology and the shape of the male first pleopod exopod and endopod. These Portuguese specimens may belong to a different, undescribed species. To confirm this, direct comparison with specimens from Mallorca and the eastern Iberian Peninsula is necessary.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/0D4C35162CC35ECA86DE70B16A1C0478	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Ferran Palero and Alberto Sendra .

Note.

In the original description of the type species (Cruz and Dalens 1990) a Holotype was not designated. According to article 73.2 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, if a Holotype (or Syntypes) is not designated in a publication prior to the year 2000, all specimens in the type-series automatically become Syntypes.

Remarks.

According to the original diagnosis (Cruz and Dalens 1990), Parachaetophiloscia differs from Chaetophiloscia only in having a smaller number of penicils on right mandible and in pleotelson shape. In Parachaetophiloscia the right mandible bears 1 penicil and the left mandible 2 + 1 penicils; in Chaetophiloscia the right mandible bears 1 + 1 penicils and 2 + 1 on the left one (see Vandel 1962; Strouhal 1968; Shavadze et al. 2023). After examining the type series of Parachaetophiloscia levantina (see below), the genus type species, it was verified that such difference is probably due to an incomplete observation. In one of the preparations (male syntype) the right mandible still preserves, next to the molar process, remains of a second penicil (Fig. 10 D, arrow), which was probably lost; thus, this mouthpart would also be identical to that of Chaetophiloscia . In the slide containing the female syntype mouthparts, the right mandible is incomplete and only pars incisiva remains, making comparison impossible. The remaining mouthparts (maxilla, maxillule, and maxilliped) are identical to those of Chaetophiloscia species (see Fig. 10 C – F). Furthermore, another specimen from the type locality of P. levantina was recently studied, and the examination of the mouthparts of this specimen confirmed the same mandibular morphology, i. e.: 1 + 1 penicils on right mandible and 2 + 1 on the left one (Fig. 10 G). Therefore, the only difference between the two genera would be the shape of the telson: subtriangular with convex sides in Parachaetophiloscia versus triangular in Chaetophiloscia . This difference is considered insufficient to justify separating the genera and here propose Parachaetophiloscia as a subjective junior synonym of Chaetophiloscia .

To facilitate comparison, the appendages preserved in good condition were re-illustrated from the slide-mounted material, including structures not depicted in the original description, as well as the complete right mandible of the newly examined specimen (Figs 10, 11).

Additional remarks.

Recently, the monotypic genus Aracenoscia was erected, with one troglobitic species from southwestern Spain: Aracenoscia cavernicola . According to the original description and illustrations, Aracenoscia differs from Chaetophiloscia only in having non-adpressed versus adpressed pleon-epimera, and in having the noduli laterales d / c maxima on the fifth pereon-tergite versus on the fourth one. The remaining morphological characters fully agree with those of Chaetophiloscia . Despite these similarities, the observed somatic differences (pleon shape and d / c maxima) warrant a more detailed assessment before formally proposing synonymy between the two genera.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/E9A3D8FD6CDA51A5BA9C9A3F12C6854F	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Dactyli of pereopods with enlarged ungual seta. Genital papilla distally bifurcate. Pleopods without lungs. Uropods with endopod and exopod inserted almost at the same level.

Etymology.

The genus name is derived from the ancient Greek Iber (Ἴβηρ), referring to the inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula, combined with the suffix ‘ oscia ‘, after Philoscia .

Remarks.

Among the European Philosciidae, Iberoscia gen. nov. exhibits a unique combination of morphological characters that justifies its recognition as a new genus. The combination of characters distinguishes Iberoscia from all the other European genera of Philosciidae . In particular, it differs from Anaphiloscia, Ctenoscia and Paractenoscia, by its cephalic structure, the presence of a penicil on the maxilliped endite; the position of the noduli laterales and in the morphology of the pereopodal dactyli. It can be further separated from Chaetophiloscia by mandibular structure, scale-setae, the position of noduli laterales and absence of epimeral groove. From Philoscia, Tiroloscia and Lepidoniscus, it differs in the antennular morphology, cephalic structure (i. e. presence of frontal and suprantennal lines, both absent in Philoscia and Tiroloscia, whereas Lepidoniscus lacks the frontal line but retains the suprantennal line), absence of epimeral grooves and pores, the maxillipedal endite with penicil, and adpressed versus expanded neopleura (see Vandel 1962; Schmalfuss 1990 a, 1990 b).

Within the subfamily Philosciinae, the occurrence of a penicil on maxilliped endite is present in some tropical species of this subfamily belonging to the genera Ischioscia Verhoeff, 1928, Pseudophiloscia Budde-Lund, 1904, Androdeloscia Leistikow, 1999 and Heroldia Verhoeff, 1926, among others (see Taiti and Ferrara 1980).

Finally, based on the combination of characters, Iberoscia gen. nov. also differs from Aracenoscia (see Additional remarks under Chaetophiloscia levantina comb. nov.).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/39E1B49AD3C153E0ACAB6DDCB5E94E9B	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Although there is no subsequent formal description of the species, this binomen has appeared in several checklists, datasets and technical documents online or in print (see, for example, Iberfauna 2008). Therefore, since neither the aforementioned thesis nor any of these publications fulfils the requirements of Article 13 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (for publications after 1960), “ Anaphiloscia iberica ” must be regarded as a nomen nudum.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/962E70DEDA1E5656A529036D9FBD0C6B	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Body outline as in Fig. 5 A, without traces of pigment in the preserved specimens. Dorsum covered with cup-shaped scale-setae (Fig. 5 D), irregularly arranged except for posterior transverse rows on pleon-tergites (Fig. 5 B, H); some marginal sail-like setae (Fig. 5 D). Noduli laterales> very small, all situated near the posterior margin of pereon-tergites (Fig. 5 C). Cephalon (Fig. 5 G) with sinuous suprantennal line; anterolateral corners acute; eyes absent. Pereon-tergites 1–4 with straight posterior margins and rounded posterior corners (Fig. 5 A, B); pereon-tergites 5–7 with progressively concave posterior margin and acute posterior corners; posterior tips of pereon epimera 7 long and pointed, reaching half of third pleon-tergite (Fig. 5 A). Pleon (Fig. 5 H) distinctly narrower than pereon; pleon epimera 3–5 not visible in dorsal view. Pleotelson (Fig. 5 H) semi-circular, about 2.8 times wider than long. Uropods (Fig. 5 H) with endopod and exopod inserted almost at the same level; exopod about 3.5 times longer than endopod. First antenna (Fig. 5 E) three-jointed; last article bearing 5 fusiform aesthetascs, 2 distal and 3 subdistal; second article shorter than first and third. Second antenna (Fig. 5 F) long, extending backwards to reach the anterior half of pereon-tergite 4; flagellum three-jointed, slightly longer than the fifth peduncular article; flagellar articles subequal, with 3 aesthetascs on second article; fifth peduncular article not swollen. Mandibles with fully dichotomized molar process; left mandible (Fig. 6 A) with three setae on molar process, 2 + 1 free penicils and a row of short scales; right mandible (Fig. 6 B) with four setae on molar process and 1 + 1 free penicils and a row of short scales. Maxillule (Fig. 6 C) outer branch with 4 + 6 teeth (4 pectinate) and single strong seta on caudal face of basis; inner branch without posterior tip, setose posterior margin and two subequal penicils. Maxilla (Fig. 6 D) with subequal width lobes; inner lobe with some basal verruca-like structures, about 10 sensilla at apex and 9–10 thickened setae on medial margin; outer lobe finely setose, with a row of thickened setae near the medial margin. Maxilliped (Fig. 6 E), endite without penicil, and one transverse row of fine setae on frontal face; palp with distal setae short. Pleopods without respiratory structures.

Male: Pereopod 1 (Fig. 6 F) and Pereopod 7 (Fig. 7 A) without sexual modifications. Pleopod 1 (Fig. 7 C), exopod triangular, slightly wider than long, with rounded tip and without marginal setae or spines; endopod with bent distal half, with apical row of fine spines. Pleopod 2 (Fig. 7 D), exopod triangular with straight inner margin and slightly concave outer margin with some setae; endopod flagelliform, about 1.4 times longer than exopod. Pleopods 3–5 as in Fig. 7 E – G. Genital papilla (Fig. 7 H) distally bifurcate.

Etymology.

Named after the Spanish biospeleologist and entomologist Alberto Sendra-Mocholí for his contributions to the subterranean biology and as the first collector of the new species.

Remarks.

This new species is distinguished from P. cavernicola by the following characters: pereopods dactyli with an enlarged ungual seta versus enlarged inner claw, genital papilla distally bifurcate, differences in the shape of scale-setae, and pereon epimera 7 with long posterior tips reaching half of the third pleon-tergite.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/2D9D07C46DAD5B3A9AB38FD357C05D83	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. They are morphologically close to P. cavernicola, from which they differ in several characters, including differences in mouthpart morphology, the lower number and different shape of antennular aesthetascs, the proportions of the antennal flagellar articles, and the presence of rows of hair-like setae on the distal margins of the merus and carpus instead of scales. They also differ from P. sendrai sp. nov. (see above) in several characters, including the type of scale-setae, the position of the noduli laterales, and the structure of the dactyli. Since only female specimens are available, we prefer not to formally describe the species until additional material becomes available.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03051287D41351568558855CC858CCD6	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
