Ayeyarwady Region: Pathein District, Yegyi Township, Kun Chaung Reserve Forest Compartment 2526, on shady humid mossy rocks near a stream under tropical bamboo forest, 94°49'25.01"E, 17°31'55.32"N, 162 m a.s.l., 8 August 2024, Y.H.Tan et al. M6814 (holotype HITBC [HITBC0123045]!; isotypes HITBC!, RAF!) .

Diagnosis: —Resembles A. kurzii but differs in pairs of leaves (1–2 pairs vs. generally 1 pair), leaf shape (spatulate or lanceolate to elliptic vs. ovate), leaf base (attenuate to cuneate or asymmetrical vs. rounded or subcordate), leaf texture (thinly papery vs. membranous), longer petioles (subsessile to 15 mm vs. subobsolete to 4 mm), larger stipules (5–15 × 10–30 mm vs. 1 × 2–5 mm), fewer inflorescences (1 or rarely 2 vs. 1–4), shorter peduncles (1.5–6.5 cm vs. 4–12 cm), larger bracts (2–7 × 5–12.5 mm vs. 2–3.5 × 3–5 mm), calyx texture (fleshy vs. chartaceous), larger corollas (2 × 4–4.5 mm vs. 1.5 × 2–2.5 mm), corolla venation (subtle vs. conspicuous), longer corolla tubes (0.5–1 mm vs. 0.4–0.6 mm), and longer anthers (2–2.5 mm vs. 1 mm) (Table 1).

Description:—Herb perennial, epilithic. Stem prostrate, 2–13 cm tall, unbranched, terete, green, succulent, glabrous, 1–2 nodes. Stipules persistent, interpetiolar, 0.5–1.5 × 1–3 cm, ovate to oblong, bilobed, with 2-costate apparently and several veins, glabrous, adaxially green, abaxially whitish green. Leaves opposite, decussate, (1–)2- paired, a pair of undeveloped leaves on the stem, sometimes seems pseudo-verticillate due to internodes closely arranged, markedly anisophyllous in pairs; smaller leaf of a pair markedly reduced, petiole subsessile to 1 cm, blade 0.5–6 × 1–13.5 cm, in the larger leaf of a pair, petiole to 1.5 cm, blade 1–7 × 5–17 cm; lamina spatulate or lanceolate to elliptic, thinly papery, adaxially green and sparsely strigose, abaxially whitish green and glabrous, base attenuate to cuneate, sometimes asymmetrical, apex acute to attenuate, margin entire; lateral veins 6–9(–10) pairs. Inflorescences terminal, simple or compound umbel, glabrous, generally 1 (rarely 2) inflorescence(s) per plant, more than 20-flowered. Peduncles pendulous, glabrous, 1.5–6.5 cm long, green. Bracts persistent, 4-lobed, fused basally into an involucre, anisophyllous in adjacent pairs, lobes ligulate or elliptic to broadly ovate, 2–7 × 5–12.5 mm, apex obtuse, glabrous, adaxially green, abaxially pale green; bracteoles several, lanceolate, 1–2.5(–4) × 2–8 mm, sometimes united at base. Flowers pedicellate, nodding, bisexual, actinomorphic, 5–merous, glabrous. Pedicels 0.5–1.6 cm long, glabrous, white. Calyx persistent, fleshy, 5- or 6-lobed, gamosepalous, in diameter ca. 4 mm, per lobe broadly triangular and 1–1.5 × 1.5 mm, apex obtuse, glabrous, adaxially green, abaxially pale. Corolla tube short to 0.5–1 mm long; corolla white, glabrous, valvate in the bud, star-shaped, 11 mm in diameter, 5-lobed, lobes lanceolate, 2 × 4–4.5 mm, apex acute, slightly recurved at maturity. Stamens 5, inserted near base of corolla tube, 2.5–3 mm long, glabrous; filaments free, 0.5–1 mm long, green; anthers 2–2.5 mm long, free and connivent into a cone-like structure, basifixed, dehiscence poricidal, yellow, dorsal with green basal connective appendages prolonged almost to apex. Pistil glabrous, white; style filiform, ca. 5 mm long, slightly twice longer than the anther cone and exserted (not exserted from bud); stigma capitate, included; disk glabrous. Fruits and seeds unknown.

Phenology: —Flowering from July to August.

Habitat and Distribution: The new species is currently known only from the type locality in Kun Chaung Reserve Forest in Yegyi Township, Pathein District, Ayeyarwady Region, southern Myanmar. It grows on wet, shady rocks near a small waterfall along the stream in a tropical bamboo forest at an elevation of 162 m a.s.l.

Etymology: —The specific epithet “ wardii ” is dedicated to British botanist Francis Kingdon-Ward for his significant contributions to flora exploration in Myanmar.

Conservation status: —Only one small population was found, and fewer than 100 individuals of A. wardii with an extent of occurrence estimated to be smaller than 10 km 2 in the field. Due to the insufficient investigation of the flora in the country, the population and threatened category assessment of this new species in the wild needs extensive surveys. Thus, it is intended to assign a status of ‘Data Deficient’ (DD) (IUCN 2012, IUCN Standards and Petitions Committee 2024).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/230787E9FFC6E261C28FFAB2FC79F844	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
