Holotype deposited in HMIM. Paratypes deposited in CJM.

Description. General features as in Fig. 1. BL: 5.3–5.5 mm. Holotype: head brown, pronotum and elytra yellowish; elytra with brownish spot restricted to the base and suture; paratypes (all females): head and pronotum brownish, darker than elytra; elytra with a contrasting brownish spot along the suture, apically and basically broadened. Dimorphic: brachypterous and macropterous specimens are present.

Head triangular elongate, HL/HW: 0.99–1.04. Eyes flat, tempora 1.25 times longer than eyes; anterior supraorbital setae present, posterior supraorbital setae missing; surface shiny, sparsely and coarsely punctured and pubescent, with weak microsculpture. Antennae elongate, with dense pubescence, antennomere I slightly broadened to apex, clearly shorter than head length (ratio: 0.8), with one long apical seta; antennae reaching elytra middle, antennomere 2 globular.

Pronotum cordiform, elongated, wider than head (HW/PW: 0.90–0.97), slightly longer than wide (PL/PW: 1.08); with one anterior and one posterior lateral seta; lateral margins deeply incised before sharp basal angles which are produced laterally, the prebasal excision short; basal fovea very superficial. Median line slightly impressed on disc, strongly impressed near base. Surface shiny, sparsely and coarsely punctured with short pubescence and weak microsculpture.

Elytra elongate, broadened to the apex, EL/EW: 1.33–1.46, with five visible, superficial striae; surface weakly shiny with weak microsculpture (stronger than on pronotum), strong punctation with short and recumbent pubescence. Apex of each elytron separately rounded, not truncate, convergent towards the suture, prominent. Umbilicata series consists of 8–10 humeral setae (arranged in two parallel lines), 1 seta in the middle and 6–7 apical setae.

Legs typical for Zuphium, with stout femora, tibiae straight, meso- and metatibiae at apex with some accessory long setae, mesotibiae short and strongly broadened to apex, no difference in protarsomeres between male and female.

Male genitalia as in Figs 2a 1–a 3. Length: 1.15 mm. Median lobe of aedeagus in lateral view dorsally strongly bent, in dorsal and ventral side sinuous, apex elongated and tip long, slightly bent upwards. Endophallus with groups of sclerotized spines, on both sides of the ostium four fields of partially fused sclerotized spines, the spines larger towards the apex; in ventral view with two groups of 9 large, sclerotized spines arranged in a V-shaped form, ending with a small central end spine, spines directed towards the apex.

Etymology. Patronymic. The species is named after Mrs Marjan Seiedy, expert on the Iranian carabid fauna, and experienced companion during the second author expedition in the Alborz Mountains.

Comparative diagnosis. Zuphium seiedyae sp. nov. differs from Z. olens (Fig. 3b) by its smaller size, absence of strong colour contrast between head and pronotum; from Z. cilicium (Fig. 3a) by elongate head and position of elytral spot; from Z. testaceum (Fig. 3d) by the continuously rounded elytral apex, shorter antennae and the presence of an elytral spot; from Z. orszuliki (Fig. 3c) by slender antennomere 1, narrower pronotum, hind angles of pronotum more prominent and yellow body colour. Zuphium seiedyae sp. nov. differs from all other Iranian Zuphium species by shape of the median lobe of aedeagus and the number and position of sclerotized spines in the endophallus. Z. olens does not have sclerotized spines. Z. testaceum (Fig. 2c) and Z. cilicium have less spines and in ventral view it is noticeable that the large spine has an asymmetrical position. Z. orszuliki (Fig. 2b) is also provided with multiple spines, but the position of their groups and the size of the ventral spines differ.

Distribution range and habitat preference. All known specimens are from the northeastern part of Fars Province. The Sepidan Mountain Pass is about 8 km north of Ardakan. The Komehr–Ardakan pass is about 10 km northeast of Ardakan. Kaftar Lake is 20 km south of Eqlid and about 80 km northeast of Ardakan. Two paratypes of the Komehr–Ardakan Pass have been collected under stones in a dry vegetation without grass at the highest elevations of the mountains (Fig. 4a). So far, no captures at light are known.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/161287C1FFDE4876DF8AFF36E09184AB	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. A small Trichochlaenius species (Figs 6a 1–a 2), BL: 7.1–7.6 mm (Holotype 7.2 mm), with slender body; dorsal side pubescent with long setae; dark green, with regular isodiametric microsculpture. Head and pronotum slightly shiny, with moderately dense and fine punctures among superficial wrinkles. Appendages light brown, slender. Macropterous.

Head short, slightly convex, HW 1.3–1.5 (Holotype 1.4); densely pubescent, with yellowish hairs; head moderately dense and finely punctured among superficial wrinkles; with regular isodiametric microsculpture; eyes slightly convex; tempora short; only posterior suborbital setae present; clypeus with two setiferous punctures on each side in middle portion, anterior margin moderately arcuated; labrum slightly convex; mandibles long and pointed; labial and mandibular palpi moderately pubescent, yellowish, last palpomeres cylindrical and gradually narrowed at apex in both sexes; penultimate labial palpomere with two long setae on inner side; antennomere 1 yellowish, antennae beginning with antennomere 2 slightly darkened; antennomere 3 slightly curved in middle and somewhat longer than anyone of antennomeres 4–7, antennae reaching near elytra middle.

Pronotum slightly cordiform (Fig. 6a 3), PL/PW: 0.93–0.87, moderately transverse; lateral margin gently sinuated to base, widest before middle; anterior margin slightly rounded, narrowly beaded, its border finely interrupted in middle; base weakly rounded at middle and oblique to corners, not beaded; anterior angles slightly protruding; posterior angles obtuse, oblique to base; lateral bead very narrow in apical half, slightly wider in basal half; without lateral and basal setae. Disc moderately densely and shallowly punctured among superficial wrinkles; median line rather narrow and not connected to base or anterior margin. Base with longitudinal depression, reaching middle of the pronotum.

Elytra ellipsoid, EL/EW: 1.55–1.63, moderately convex, widest behind middle, much wider than head and pronotum and much longer than pronotum, EW/HW: 2.14, EW/PW: 2, EL/PL: 3.28; basal border not beaded; humeri widely rounded; elytral striae deep, not punctured and not reaching to base; intervals slightly convex, strongly and densely pubescent, intervals 3 and 5 with a row of punctures; parascutellar striole shallow, parascutellar puncture located at base of stria 1. Integument with elongate transverse microsculpture.

Ventral area pubescent (Fig. 6a 2), head and ventrites dark green, thorax dark brown. Head with continuous transverse wrinkles; gula with transverse wrinkles in apical half, glabrous in basal half; mentum with median simple tooth. Prosternum moderately pubescent, setae on proepipleuron extending on border of pronotum. Prosternal process dark brown, moderately convex, narrowly beaded, widely rounded at apex. Mesosternum with sparse hairs; mesosternal process and mesepimera dark brown. Abdominal ventrites pubescent; dense rasp-like punctured; last four abdominal ventrites with 1 seta in middle on each side; Microsculpture consisting of elongate transverse microsculpture.

Legs as normal in Trichochlaenius; male protarsomeres 1–3 slightly widened, with two rows of adhesive setae on ventral sides. All tarsi moderately pubescent on dorsal side; mesotarsomere 1 with spare setae on ventral side; metatarsomeres 1 densely pubescent on ventral side.

Male genitalia (Figs 6b 1–b 2): median lobe in lateral view elongated, regularly arcuated (Fig. 6b 1), apex bent down, apex narrowed and rounded in dorsal view (Fig. 6b 2). Endophallus without flagellum (Fig. 6b 1). Length 1.2 mm.

Female genitalia (Fig. 6c): an apical gonocoxite with pointed apex; two short setae on just before apex, two dorsolateral ensiform setae on one side and one dorsolateral ensiform seta on other side.

Etymology. The specific epithet refers to the type locality, Shimbar area among Zagros Mountains (north of Khuzestan Province).

Comparative diagnosis. We placed C. (T.) shimbarensis sp. nov. in the subgenus Trichochlaenius because of pubescence of the dorsal and ventral side of the body, the relatively small pronotum compared to the long elytra, slender appendages. Chlaenius (T.) shimbarensis sp. nov. differs from all other Iranian Trichochlaenius species by the absence of a flagellum in the endophallus of the median lobe of aedeagus (Figs 8e–h). The new species is smaller than C. aeneocephalus, C. gotschii and C. steveni . The last three species are differently coloured (mostly bluish) in contrast to C. (T.) shimbarensis sp. nov. Chlaenius (T.) shimbarensis sp. nov. differs from C. albissoni by more convex head, longer pronotum, finer punctation of dorsal side and the only slightly broadened protarsomeres in males.

Distribution range and habitat preference. All known specimens were found along the Shimbar seasonal lake, under plant debris (Fig. 4b).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/161287C1FFDB487ADF8AFAFDE1738333	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. In all the museums and private collections, we could find only one specimen collected after 1844. The description of this species conforms to the original by Chaudoir (1846, 1876). To this we have added photos of the median lobe. In addition to the differences between C. gotschii and C. steveni as observed by Chaudoir, we can add: C. steveni antennomere 3 is nearly 1.5 times as long as antennomere 4; C. gotschii antennomere 3 is slightly longer than antennomere 4 (Figs 7, 8c–d).

The presence of this species in Azerbaijan (Lenkoran, recorded already by Chaudoir (1876)) was overlooked by Kirschenhofer (2017). We cannot confirm the record of C. gotschii in Armenia (Kirschenhofer 2017).

The distribution of known species of Chlaenius (Trichochlaenius) in Iran is shown in Fig. 9.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/161287C1FFD7487FDF8AF917E7DD847F	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
