Head elongate, longer than wide (transverse in Burmahelota Liu, Ślipiński, Ren & Pang, Mesohelotopsis Kirejtshuk, Metahelotella, Neohelota and Trihelota). Frontoclypeal suture present (absent in other helotid genera). Neck broad (narrow in Lobatihelota). Antennal club ca. 2.0 times as long as wide (usually as long as wide in Neohelota while ca. 1.5 times as long as wide in Afrohelotina Kirejtshuk, Palaeohelota Liu, Ślipiński, Ren & Pang, Strophohelota Kirejtshuk, Helota and Trihelota). Antennal grooves well-developed, extending beyond eyes (short and indistinct in Lobatihelota and Trihelota). Pronotum with length distinctly shorter than wide (as long as wide in Burmahelota while longer than wide in Lobatihelota and Trihelota). Pronotal lateral sides distinctly widening posteriad (arcuate in Burmahelota and Mesohelotopsis while subparallel-sided in Lobatihelota and Trihelota). Pronotal posterior margin deeply bisinuate, forming well-developed median lobe (subtruncate, with four weakly developed sinuations in Strophohelota). Pronotal disc glabrous, covered with sparse and fine punctation (surface rugose, irregularly and coarsely punctate, with raised patches in Helota). Prosternum unmodified (with paired short carinae in Trihelota). Prosternal process with apex truncate (usually strongly expanded, with apex broadly emarginate in extant genera and Lobatihelota). Mesoventrite unmodified (with paired carinae continuous with the sides of prosternal process). Exposed portions of metepisterna separating metacoxae from elytra (metacoxae extending laterally to meet elytra in Trihelota). Elytra glabrous, lacking elevated costae (with elevated costae in Afrohelotina, Helota, Lobatihelota and Palaeohelota). Elytral striae punctate, punctation indistinct, sparse and shallow (distinctly developed, deep and coarse in Afrohelotina, Helota, Metahelotella, Mesohelotopsis, Neohelota and Strophohelota). Elytra without coloured spots (present in Burmahelota, Helota, Neohelota and Trihelota). Tibiae subparallel-sided (widening apicad in Lobatihelota). Tarsomeres not lobed, IV only slightly shorter than III (I – III bilobed, with densely setose pads, IV extremely shorter and smaller than III in Lobatihelota).

Etymology.

The generic epithet is a combination of the Greek word μῠστήρῐον [mystery, enigma], referring to its unique morphology compared with other helotid beetles (e. g. presence of frontoclypeal suture), and Helota, the type genus of the family. Gender feminine.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/2567A40CB2525D0AA26E0E0CFFA1B323	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. See Agosti, D., Egloff, W., 2009.
