T. Yang & X. J. He 2025

Allium peikingense J.T. Yang & X.J.He, sp. nov. (Figs. 1, 2)

Type: — CHINA. Beijing Municipality, Shangfangshan Mountain, forest edge, 39°40′ N, 115°49′ E, elevation 523 m, 6 September 2017, yit20170906-01 (holotype SZ: SZAP001; isotype SZ: SZAP002–SZAP004) (Fig. 2) .

Diagnosis: — Allium peikingense is most similar to A. neriniflorum and A.tubiflorum concerning morphological and phenological characters, but it can be easily distinguished by several key traits. It bears white tepals with blunt-rounded apices (vs. red to purple tepals with acute apices in both A. neriniflorum and A. tubiflorum). The leaves are relatively broad, semicylindrical, hollow, and bear several prominent longitudinal ridges (vs. narrower, cylindrical to subcylindrical, hollow leaves with multiple ridges in A. neriniflorum; vs. broader, flat leaves lacking clear hollowness and ridging in A. tubiflorum). Pedicels are long, measuring 7–9 cm (vs. ≤ 4 cm in A. tubiflorum), resembling the pedicel length of A. neriniflorum . The ovary is 3-loculed, with two ovules per locule; one locule is entirely aborted, resulting in a total of four mature seeds (vs. ovary 3-loculed with two ovules per locule, all developing normally to produce six mature seeds). The leaves are evergreen throughout the year, similar to A. tubiflorum (vs. Allium neriniflorum, whose leaves wither in late autumn and re-emerge the following March). Cytologically, A. peikingense is tetraploid (2n = 32) (vs. diploid, 2n = 16, in both A. neriniflorum and A. tubiflorum). As a tetraploid, A. peikingense also exhibits larger morphological dimensions (vs. smaller stature in diploid relatives), including greater plant height, longer leaves, and larger bulbs. In comparison with A. inutile, a Japanese endemic, A. peikingense also has white tepals but features pale purplish midveins and blunt-rounded apices (vs. green midveins and more acute tepals in A. inutile), as well as longer pedicels measuring 7–9 cm (vs. ≤ 4 cm). Moreover, A. inutile uniquely exhibits short, thick, triangular teeth along the longitudinal ridges of its scape (vs. absent in A. peikingense). In terms of phenology, A. peikingense typically flowers from early July through September, with evergreen leaves that persist year-round (vs. Allium inutile, which flowers later, from September to October; its leaves emerge after flowering and wither by late summer of the following year, showing a clear separation between flowering and leaf growth) (Figs. 1–5, Table 1).

Description: —Perennial herbs, bulb solitary, ovoid-globose to subglobose, 1.5–3.5 cm in diam; outer tunic grayish black, membranous, entire; inner tunics white, membranous. Leaves evergreen, persistent, synanthous, equaling or longer than scape, 25–55(–65) cm long, 2.5–4(–4.5) mm wide, subsemiterete, hollow, with longitudinal ridges on the back. Scape 20–35(–60) cm long, 2.2–3 mm in diameter, subterete with lateral ridges, covered by leaf sheaths only at the base. Spathe 1-valved, persistent. Umbel few flowered. Pedicels unequal, (4.5–) 7–9 cm long, bracteolate. Perianth stellately spreading, white; segments narrowly ovate, 7–12 × 2–3.5 mm, connate at base into a 2–3 mm tube, apex obtuse, midvein pale purple; inner ones usually longer and narrower than outer. Style exserted beyond the perianth, nearly as long as the ovary; stigma 3-lobed. Filaments subulate, ca. 1/2 as long as perianth segments, connate at base and adnate to perianth segments for 2–3 mm. Ovary conical-globose, without concave nectaries at base; stigma 3- lobed; locules 3, each with 2 ovules, one locule abortive, producing 4 mature seeds. Capsule sessile, smooth, shallowly 3-grooved, apex with small depression, base slightly rounded, immature deep green. Seeds 2 per locule, ovoid-globose, ca. 3 mm diameter, black and glossy. 2n = 32 (Figs. 1–5, Table 1).

Phenology: —Flowering from July to September, fruiting from October to November.

Etymology: —The specific epithet refers to the type locality of this new species in Beijing, China. The species is named after the city where it was discovered. The Chinese name is “ 北京ª ” (Běijīngjiǔ).

Distribution, habitat and ecology: — Allium peikingense is currently known to be distributed in Shangfang Mountain, Baihua Mountain, Da'an Mountain, and Songshan in Beijing, China. It was observed to grow in low mountain slopes and forest edges at elevations below 1500 m a.s.l.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/052A878F6052FFEFFF51FF1E8659F9DF	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
