The genus was not recorded from Ethiopia before. A. balensis sp. nov. new species belongs to the group of species with apically cleft valvae like A. cymataula (Meyrick, 1926) from Zimbabwe and A. epirota (Meyrick, 1914) from Malawi. Diagnostic characters of the new species are the structure of the tegumen with the fused and widely separated uncus lobes, the elongate valvae and the pair of lateral teeth on the subapical tip of the phallus. The forewing pattern reminds of A. anchiala Meyrick, 1909 from South Africa. A remarkable feature of A. balensis sp. nov. are the tips of the fore-wings, which are upturned and entirely recurved, a similar condition as observed in species of Erechthias Meyrick, 1880 (see Robinson and Nielsen (1993)).

Description.

Adult. Length of fore-wing 6.5 mm, wingspan 14 mm, interocular index 1.36. Head wedge-shaped, vertex dorsally with horizontal tuft of black, piliform scales, ventrally with semi-erect grey scales, brow-ridge of vertex with grey-white piliform scales, occiput with semi-erect, grey-white lamellate scales, caudally directed; labial palps brown, upcurved, slender, diverging, second segment without lateral bristles, maxillary palps small, grey-white; scape black with line of grey-white scales extending to dorsal side of basal flagellomeres, antenna brown, shortly ciliate (0.2); thorax grey-white, tegulae black at bases; fore-leg grey-brown with epiphysis, legs grey-white, tarsus brown, white dorsally at articulations; inner spur of basal spur pair of hind-leg nearly as long as tibia; dorsal and ventral side of tibia with hair-pencil; fore-wing grey-white, with dark brown band along costal margin, at apex elongate, black-tipped scales forming distinct cilia line, fore-wing apex upturned and entirely recurved, hind-wing and cilia grey. Abdominal terga of segments III – VI with patches of small spines on anterior margins.

Male genitalia (Fig. 8 A – C). Tegumen large, without emarginations, fused with small vinculum of segment IX, saccus slender and rod-like; uncus lobes widely separated, acute and without spines at apices; gnathos absent; subscaphium present; valva elongate, longer than tegumen, deeply divided medially into dorsal and ventral lobes, basal apodemes long, with transtilla present; anellus shield-shaped; phallus slender, tube-like, with broad base, one pair of subapical teeth, cornuti absent.

Female unknown.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/1865B522EC465A939FEB845127489F9D	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. From Ethiopia only E. torrifacta (Gozmány, 1965) was recorded (Tujuba et al. 2019). The new species is quite dissimilar from E. torrifacta and belongs to the E. paraxena complex group within the genus. According to male genitalia, the most similar species are E. euplocamis (Meyrick, 1918) and E. paraxena (Meyrick, 1908), both species occurring in southern Africa. Diagnostic differences of the new species include the form of segment IX, the digitate uncus processes, the sub-triangular form of the valva, which is without median crest or small denticles.

Description.

Adult. Length of fore-wing 5–5.5 mm, wingspan 11–12 mm. Interocular index 1.4 (♂). Head vestiture on frons, vertex and occiput with pale ochreous, piliform scales, maxillary palps dark brown, long, 5 - segmented, labial palps dark brown, with lateral bristles; proboscis small, membranous; antenna and scape white, flagellomeres, smooth, flattened. Thorax dark ochreous; fore- and middle legs brown, hind-legs ochreous, with hair-pencil on dorsal side of tibia; fore-wings smooth-scaled, unicoloured ochreous, shining, cilia ochreous; hind-wings pale brown, cilia ochreous, underside of both wings pale brown. Sternum II of abdomen with broadly sclerotised apodemes, apical tips slightly curved (Fig. 6 N). Coremata pair present in pleural membrane of segment VIII.

Male genitalia (Fig. 6 D – E). It refers to the diverging uncus lobes in the male genitalia.

Diagnosis.

The new species belongs to the group of black-headed species, which are difficult to tell apart (Petersen 1988). None of them is known from Ethiopia. The geographically nearest neighbour, P. ruwenzorica Gozmány & Vári, 1973, was described from several high-altitude localities in Kenya and Uganda and its occurrence in Ethiopia seems to be quite possible. In the male genitalia of the new species, however, the uncus lobes are slightly curved and in a diverging position as seen in dorsal view. This character is a taxonomic novelty within the genus and justifies the recognition of a separate species.

Description.

Adult (Fig. 10 D). Length of fore-wing 10 mm, wingspan 21 mm. The new species resembles externally W. scaeozona (Meyrick, 1920), which was known from Kenya and Uganda before. It is reported in this article also from Ethiopia (see above). Both species can be distinguished by the different shape of the yellow transverse band in the fore-wing illustrated in Figs 9 P, 10 G. In addition, W. angensteini sp. nov. has a streak of yellow scales in the fore-wing apex stretching into the cilia. This streak is absent in other species of the genus. In the male genitalia, the melanised subscaphium (terminology after Robinson) with enlarged lateral sides is an autapomorphic character of the species.

Description.

Adult (Fig. 10 G). Length of fore-wing 5–6 mm, wingspan 10–14 mm, interocular index 0.66. Head bronzy-brown, glossy, smooth scaled on frons and vertex, deep furrow at vertex without tuft of hairs; labial palpi diverging, second segment without lateral bristles, third segment flat; scape purple-grown, antenna yellow-brown. Thorax purple-brown, fore-leg with epiphysis, legs very bristly at articulations and at spurs; inner spur of basal spur pair of hind-leg nearly as long as tibia; fore-wing purple-brown, with transverse yellow fascia, extending towards apex on costa, hind-wings dark brown, cilia grey-brown.

Male genitalia (Fig. 8 J – L). Tegumen and vinculum of segment IX fused forming stout ring with dorsal and ventral emarginations; saccus slender and rod-like, angled before articulating with vinculum; uncus lobes widely separated, with few spines at apices; gnathos absent; subscaphium attached at base of tuba analis, strongly melanised, forming a horizontal, elongate plate with winged lateral margins; valva elongate, with three small, basal lobes at median side; yuxta elongate, with two lateral arms divided into inner and outer lobes, weakly melanised, almost membranous: phallus slender, tube-like, without cornuti.

Female genitalia (Fig. 8 N – O). Oviscapt 0.7 length of abdomen, apophyses anteriores originating medially from sternum VIII, not furcating apically; caudal apex of sternum VIII bifidly pointed and darkened; spermatheca flat, with long caudal arms and short median process.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/8BE7ADDA68EE51A584FF319364E08219	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
