C. Nguyen 2025

Vanilla baosangii Vuong, Aver. & V.C.Nguyen sp. nov. (Figures 1–3)

Type: — VIETNAM, Lam Dong Province, Don Duong District, 18 June 2025, Truong Ba Vuong, Nguyen Van Canh & Loc Bao Sang, BV 1398 (VNM 00074100, holotype).

Diagnosis: — Vanilla baosangii is similar to V. siamensis and V. tiendatii in having tuft of hairs at apex of the epichile and hairy column. However, it differs from V. siamensis in the lip indumentum, column with prominent wings, and larger anther cap; from V. tiendatii it differs in larger leaves, more numerous, long and thin hairs at apex of the epichile, and the column having at front long dense hairs.

Description: —Herbaceous later epiphytic, terrestrial, creeping vine. Stem green, fleshy, simple, rarely branching, to 10 m long, often pendulous in apical part, terete, 1–1.8 cm in diameter, roots 3–5 mm in diameter, arising opposite petiole; internodes 6.5–15.5 cm long. Leaves shortly petiolate; petiole 2–2.3 cm long, slightly twisted, adaxially grooved; leaf blade coriaceous, glabrous, elliptic to widely elliptic, 18–26 cm long, 7.8–11.5 cm wide, shortly acuminate. Inflorescence raceme, axillary, pedunculate, entirely glabrous, 6–9 cm long; peduncle terete, fleshy, 1.5–3 cm long, 0.9–1 cm in diameter, with 3 ovate, acute, concave, distant bracts to 1 cm long; rachis somewhat rough, 4.5–6 cm long, 1–1.2 cm in diameter, bearing to 25 flowers; floral bracts dark green, ovate to widely ovate, concave, 7–8 mm long, acute or obtuse, embracing the pedicel; pedicel with ovary 2.5–3 cm long, pedicel white, ovary light greenish to dark green. Flowers widely opening, open in succession, sepals and petals yellowish-green, lip white, at basal part yellow, apical part purple; hairs on median lip lobe red on 2/3 from the base, and white at apical third. Median sepal oblanceolate, 4–4.8 cm long, 1.8–1.9 cm wide (when flattened), slightly concave, acute. Lateral sepals oblanceolate, 4.2–5 cm long, 1.5–1.6 cm wide, acute. Petals widely oblanceolate, 4–5 cm long, 1.7–2 cm wide, acute to obtuse, with abaxial keel along the median vein. Lip trumpet-shaped, 4 cm long and wide (when flattened), obscurely 3-lobed, adnate to the column margin on 1.8–2 cm from base, overlapped over the column apical part, margin entire; median lobe triangular to semi-circular, 0.5–0.6 cm long, 1.5–1.7 cm wide, acute to obtuse, margin slightly undulate, apical part with a group of fat, branched hairs, 4–7 mm long, ca. 1 mm in diameter; side-lobes semi-circular or obscurely triangular, 2.2 cm long, 1.3–1.5 cm wide, rounded at apex, margin slightly undulate; claw at lip base 1–1.5 cm long, with two warty, rich yellow longitudinal keels forming a distinct groove; disc at center with rectangular or trapezoid bunch of scarious, imbricate, truncate scales, curved back, fimbriate or ciliate at apex. Column white, at front yellow, terete, sigmoid, 2.5–2.7 cm long, 3.5–4 mm wide, at front somewhat grooved, papillose and hairy with orange-brown hairs 1–2 mm long near apical part; column apex with lateral, semi-circular wings; stigma completely hidden between rostellum and stigma lobe; rostellum rectangular truncate shelf-like, somewhat convex, ca. 5 mm long, ca. 7 mm wide, longer than lateral wings, with revolute side-margins, stigma lobe rectangular, truncate, somewhat convex, similar in size and shape with rostellum, front margin irregularly dentate, sides of stigma with two small, lateral, finger-like, forward directed horns; anther square, incumbent, attach to a bilobed apex clinandrium, ca. 4 mm tall and wide, at front with two short, forward curved horns, between horns with a small knob-like, warty callus.

Etymology: —The species is named after Mr. Loc Bao Sang who discovered additional plant materials of the new species and provided it for this study.

Habitat and phenology: —Species grows in evergreen, broad-leaved primary and secondary forests on granite along rocky streams at elevation of about 1200 m a.s.l. (Figure 1). Flowers in early June.

Distribution: — Vietnam, Lam Dong and Kon Tum (?) provinces.

Conservation status: — Vanilla baosangii is currently confirmed by herbarium collections from a single location in Lam Dong Province of southern Vietnam, where it occupies a very restricted area of approximately 30 m ². This population includes numerous mature individuals. However, the habitat is under significant threat due to clearing of surrounding lands by local people for coffee plantations, which leads to disturbance of native vegetation. Following IUCN guidelines AOO (2024), V. baosangii can be assessed as Critically Endangered [CR B2ab(iii)], due to its very limited area of occupancy, the presence of a single confirmed population, and continuing decline of habitat quality. Further fieldwork is needed to confirm the presence of the species in Ngoc Linh Mountains (Kon Tum Province) based on photo reports and protect the single known population in Lam Dong Province.

Note: — Vanilla baosangii is most similar to V. siamensis, sharing papillose indumentum on the median lip lobe and hairy column. However, V. baosangii can be distinguished from V. siamensis by having fewer, but densely placed, flattened, often forked hairs on the median lip lobe (vs. filamentous, commonly simple papillae), verruculose surface between the hairy epichile and the bunch of scales (vs. glabrous), two warty keels forming a groove inside the claw (vs. groove without keel-like flanges), lip side-lobes surface with four to five distinct verruculose lines (vs. surface of side-lobes smooth and glabrous), upper clinandrium wall slightly incurved, and bilobed (vs. clinandrium wall erect and hardly emarginate), lateral wings of clinandrium prominent, semi-circular (vs. insignificant), and anther cap ca. 4 mm long, with 2 forward curved horns and warty median callus (vs. ca. 2 mm long, without distinct horns, glabrous at apex). In addition, V. baosangii differs from the closely related V. tiendatii by having large elliptic leaves 18–26 cm long, 7.8–11.5 cm wide (vs. ovate to broadly elliptic, 4–9 cm long, 4–6 cm wide), inflorescence bearing up to 25 flowers(vs. up to 13 flowers per inflorescence), lip apex with a group of thick branched hairs 4–7 mm long (vs. short papillae-like hairs, 1–2.5 mm long), column with dense long hairs at the apex, much longer than in the basal half (vs. column with 2 lines of short hairs).

Paratype: — VIETNAM, Lam Dong Province, Don Duong District, 18 June 2025, Truong Ba Vuong, Nguyen Van Canh & Loc Bao Sang, BV 1398 (VNM00074098, VNM 00074073).

Additional studied specimen: —The specimen was prepared from a cultivated plant possibly originating from the Ngoc Linh Mountain, Kon Tum Province, collected by local people, and subsequently successfully cultivated in the garden of Nguyen Van Canh, flowered on 5 July 2018, Nguyen Van Canh, AL417 (LE LE01168113 https:// en.herbariumle.ru/?t=occ&id=133899).

Photo record: — VIETNAM.
