S. D. Irsyam & M. R. Hariri 2025

Schismatoglottis ambigua A.S.D.Irsyam & M.R.Hariri, sp. nov. (Fig. 1)

Schismatoglottis ambigua is vegetatively similar to S. calyptrata (Roxburgh 1832: 514) Zollinger & Moritzi in Moritzi (1846: 83) in having sagittate leaves with white variegation on the adaxial surface. It also bears resemblance to Bau inculta (Kurniawan & Boyce 2011: 41) Wong & Boyce (2024: 79) in possessing a longitudinally ribbed petiole and a conspicuous, shaggy mass of muchelongated staminodes, but differs by the absence of any detectable aromatic scent. However, similar brush-like elongated staminodes are also observed in S. subundulata (Zollinger ex Schott 1856: 123) Nicolson (1969: 61), although they differ in their orientation, being directed upwards in that species.

Type: — INDONESIA, Sulawesi, Southeastern Sulawesi, Kolaka, 24 May 2025, MR Hariri 1015 (holotype FIPIA!, isotypes BO!, UIDEP!).

Mesophytic herb, up to 30 cm in height, not aromatic vegetatively. Stems hypogeal, 3–4.5 mm in diam., white; internodes conspicuous, 1–4 mm long, Leaves 4–6 together; petiole D-shaped, longitudinally ribbed, 5.2–12.3 cm long, slightly channelled along its length, brownish-green to purplish-green; petiolar sheath, 2.3–4 cm long, sheathing for ⅖ to 1/3 of petiole length, persistent, membranous, fully attached, without ligule, in rolled, tapering, greenish-white to purplish; blades sagittate to hastate, 3.2–8.9 × 1.6–6.7 cm, weakly coriaceous, dark green with silvery white patterns adaxially, glaucous abaxially, posterior lobes subtriangular to triangular, 3–34 mm long, sinus 1.2–5.8 cm across, apex of anterior lobe acuminate for 1.1–3.0 cm, ultimately mucronate for 1.5–2.0 mm; midrib adaxially flush with the blade, raised abaxially; primary lateral veins 5–15 per side, raised abaxially; interprimary veins raised abaxially, alternating irregularly with primaries; secondary veins 5–11, emerging from primary veins and midrib. Inflorescences 2 in a synflorescence, emitting an esteric smell during pistillate anthesis; peduncle ca. 5.5 cm long × 3 mm diam., terete, yellowish-green; spathe ca. 4.5 cm long; lower spathe asymmetrically ovoid, ca. 1 cm long × 0.7 cm wide, yellowish green, externally smooth, separated from spathe limb by a constriction coinciding with lower staminate zone; spathe limb pale greenish yellow and turbinate at anthesis, ca. 3.5 cm long × 0.6 cm wide, mucronate for 1.5 mm, caducous in a single piece at the onset of staminate anthesis; spadix 4 cm long, shorter than spathe, sessile; pistillate floret zone cylindric, ca. 1 cm long × 3 mm wide, 1/3 length of spadix, white; pistils globose, 0.8–1.0 mm in height, 1.2 mm in diam., densely arranged; stigma sub-globose, truncate, narrower ovary, 0.3–0.4 mm diam., white; interpistillar staminodes absent; interstice zone ca. 0.8 mm long; staminate floret zone cylindric, narrower at proximal end, wider at distal end, ca. 9.7 mm long × 4 mm wide, 1/3 length of spadix, creamy white; staminate florets 0.6–1.2 mm long × 0.4–0.7 mm wide, butterfly-shaped from above, densely arranged, each comprising 2 truncate stamens, tops depressed, overtopped by a broad, raised connective; appendix bullet-shaped, ca. 19 mm long × 7 mm wide, about 1/3 length of spadix, slightly wider than the top of staminate floret zone, white; staminodes cylindric to clavate towards the tip of the appendix, ca. 1 mm long × 0.4–0.5 mm wide, densely arranged. Infructescences, fruits, and seeds not observed.

Distribution: —The species is currently known only from Kolaka, Southeastern Sulawesi, with no additional populations recorded to date.

Ecology: —Forested riverbanks situated along steep slopes.

Etymology: —The specific epithet ambigua is derived from the Latin adjective ambiguus, meaning “uncertain,” “ambiguous,” or “doubtful.” It refers to the morphological complexity of the species, which exhibits a unique combination of characters that overlap with those of both Schismatoglottis and Bau, rendering its initial generic placement uncertain. The name highlights the taxonomically ambiguous nature of the species and reflects the evolutionary fluidity within Schismatoglottideae.

Note: — Schismatoglottis ambigua is a distinctive species, readily differentiated from all other members of the genus by a unique suite of morphological traits. These include a hastate leaf blade, ribbed petioles, and the absence of aromatic compounds in vegetative tissues when crushed—contrasted by a distinctly aromatic spathe. Although S. ambigua exhibits superficial similarities in vegetative and inflorescence traits with S. subundulata and B. inculta, it is unequivocally distinguished from both taxa by a consistent suite of diagnostic morphological characters encompassing both vegetative structures and inflorescence architecture (Table 1).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03B987A6FFE1FFA124A4FA6D798FFB7C	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
