Roots slightly thickened, tubers not seen. Branches green to dark purple, striate when dry, sparsely to moderately pubescent with pale, sub-appressed hairs, slightly denser at nodes. Leaves imparipinnate 3-foliolate. Stipules linear, ca. 1.5 mm, moderately pubescent. Petiole and rachis green to dark purple, slender, hairy as branches but with shorter hairs; petiole 2.6–4.0 cm, with a basal pulvinus 2–4 mm, somewhat swollen, sparsely hairy; rachis 1.1–1.6 cm. Petiolules ca. 2 mm, sparsely pubescent with pale, ± ascending hairs. Stipels not observed. Leaflets thinly chartaceous, ovate-lanceolate; margins slightly undulate; broadly cuneate to sub-truncate at base, acuminate with an acumen at apex; lateral leaflets obviously smaller, asymmetric at base, 3.5–4.5 × 2.4–2.9 cm, acumen 6–8 mm; terminal leaflet 6.0–6.6 × 3.5–4.0 cm, acumen 1.0– 1.2 cm; adaxial surface dark green, subglabrous, only sparsely pubescent with pale, ± ascending hairs along midvein; abaxial surface grayish green, subglabrous, only sparsely pubescent with pale, ± ascending hairs along veins; midvein and lateral veins often dark purple abaxially, especially at basal part; lateral veins 4–5 pairs, anastomosing; tertiary veins reticulate. Inflorescence a nodose pseudoraceme, axillary, solitary, 2.2–3.0 cm; axis striate when dry, sparsely pubescent with pale, sub-appressed hairs; nodes swollen, usually 3-flowered. Bracts not observed. Pedicels 2–3 mm, sparsely pubescent with pale, ± ascending hairs. Bracteoles 2, subtending the calyx, linear, ca. 0.5 mm, brownish when dry, caducous. Flowers ca. 8 mm long. Calyx campanulate, ± bilabiate, upper lip ca. 1.5 × 1.0 mm, lower lip ca. 3.0 × 2.0 mm, or sometimes shallowly 4-lobed with the lowest lobe the longest; external surface sparsely puberulent, denser along calyx mouth. Corolla greenish white, bilaterally asymmetric, upper half of keel twisted to one side; standard incompletely opening with apex nearly adnate to keel apices, broadly obovate, ca. 10 × 6.8 mm, somewhat hooded, with a pink patch on lower part of inner surface, auriculate ca. 0.5 mm, claw ca. 1.3 mm; wing petals sub-oblong, ca. 5.0 × 2.0 mm, auriculate ca. 1.3 mm, claw ca. 2.0 mm; keel petals curved to nearly semicircular, ca. 7.5 × 2.0 mm, claw ca. 2.5 mm. Stamens (9+1) diadelphous, ca. 7.5 mm, sheath of nine fused stamens folded into S-shape; filaments glabrous; anthers dorsifixed, ca. 0.5 mm. Pistil ca. 1.0 cm long; ovary glabrous; style glabrous, coiled toward one side at apex; stigma capitate. Pods linear-falcate, ca. 11.0 × 0.6 cm, valves coriaceous, elastically dehiscent along both sutures when mature, surface glabrous but punctate with raised, scattered dots, brownish when mature, somewhat thickened along both sutures; septa present between seeds, brownish, loose and falling easily. Seeds ellipsoid, smooth, black with brownish yellow mottled patterns, or vice versa, ca. 4.5 × 3.5 × 3.5 mm; hilum oblong, ca. 1.0 mm.

Distribution and ecology: — Apios brevis is currently known from Qianshan County, Anhui Province, China, based on herbarium specimen records (Fig. 4). Additionally, according to Dr. Xin-Xin Zhu (pers. comm.), this species has also been observed in Yuexi County, Anhui Province.

Apios brevis is typically found in moso bamboo [ Phyllostachys edulis (Carrière 1866: 380) Houzeau de Lehaie 1906: 7] forests at an elevation of ca. 500 m above sea level.

Conservation status: —Due to the very limited populations discovered to date, the area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) for Apios brevis cannot be calculated properly. Thus, following the IUCN (2024) guidelines, we tentatively assess A. brevis as Data Deficient (DD). Further study is required to correctly assess its conservation status, given that newly described species can be attributed to very different IUCN (2024) categories, ranging from highly threatened, as CR (El Zein & Bottcher 2024) or EN (Brullo et al. 2015; Ben Mahmoud et al. 2024), to not or near threatened, as NT (Perrino et al. 2018) or LC (Siti-Munirah & Dome 2023).

Etymology: —The specific epithet brevis (Latin: short, small) refers to the short inflorescences of Apios brevis .

The standard Chinese name of Apios brevis is here given as DZñ土圞儿 / DZñ土圞兒 (duǎn xù tǔ luán ér), which is a direct translation of the scientific name.

Taxonomic remarks: —Morphologically, Apios brevis is most like the widely distributed A. fortunei . Both species share greenish-white corollas that are bilaterally asymmetric with the upper part of the keel twisted to one side. However, A. brevis can be distinguished from A. fortunei by its consistently 3-foliolate leaves (vs. leaves with 3–7 leaflets) with slightly undulate leaflet margins (vs. entire leaflets); shortened pseudoracemes 2.2–3.0 cm long (vs. pseudoracemes elongate, 6.0–22.0 cm) with densely arranged flowers (vs. sparsely arranged flowers); and smaller flowers ca. 0.8 cm long (vs. ca. 1.1 cm long).

Apios brevis also resembles A. chindiana 1 in its slightly undulate leaflet margins; however, A. brevis differs from A. chindiana in its consistently 3-foliolate leaves (vs. leaves with 3–5 leaflets) with generally more chartaceous (thinly chartaceous) leaflets (vs. membranous-chartaceous); shortened pseudoracemes 2.2–3.0 cm long (vs. elongated pseudoracemes, 7.2–22.0 cm); smaller flowers ca. 0.8 cm long (vs. ca. 1.9 cm long); greenish white corolla that is bilaterally asymmetric with the upper part of the keel twisted to one side (vs. reddish to dull red corolla, bilaterally symmetric); a larger ratio (ca. 0.67) of wing petal length to standard petal length (vs. ca. 0.47); and its stamen sheath folded into S-shape (vs. stamen sheath only slightly twisted toward apex).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03B687E6FFB4FFC396E4FB8DFC2DE666	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
