Monobasic.

Diagnosis after Townes (1971).

Front wing 2.2 to 3.0 mm. long. Clypeus flush with surface of face raised, its apex truncate, exposing labrum. Mandible falcate, with a long upper tooth and on its inner edge a very small lower tooth. Mesoscutum nearly always partly hairy, usually with a sublateral hairless area, sometimes almost entirely hairless and rarely with hairs on its entire surface. Notaulus absent. Prepectal carina absent. Pleural carina entirely or largely absent, often replaced in part or entirely by a shallow groove. Propodeum without carinae except for apical part of lateral carinae, the apical area of propodeum never completely bounded by carinae. Areolet absent. Intercubitus 0.3 to 1.0 as long as the second section of cubitus. Nervellus weakly to moderately reclivous, not intercepted. First tergite is broad to very narrow, in many species narrower at apex than at spiracle. Metasoma often very compressed with hairs moderately sparse to very sparse or almost absent. Ovipositor sheath narrow, curved, polished and with very sparse hairs, about as long as apical depth of metasoma. Ovipositor upcurved.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03B687DC23599E50FF062372ED6BF8C6	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. See Agosti, D., Egloff, W., 2009. Townes (1969) provided a detailed redescription and retained it in Neurateles without changes in status or synonymy. No subsequent taxonomic modifications exist, and N. papyraceus remains a valid species of Neurateles .

Material examined: 1♀ BRAZIL (DCBU 337487) ‘’ Buíque, Brazil, Parque Nacional do Catimbau’ ’ ‘’ S08°33’14’’ W 37°15’04’’ alt 695m; 02. Head very narrow (Fig. b), body entirely laterally compressed. Frons broad, strongly punctate. Vertex wide (Fig. c). Notauli absent. Propodeal carination absent, except on apical part of lateral carina, the apical area of propodeum never completely bounded by carinae (Fig. b). Areolet absent. Nervellus weakly to moderately reclivous, not intercepted. Metasoma sessile, very long. Ventral fold present on sternites 1–3, markedly elevated on sternites 1–2. Ovipositor as long as 1/6th of abdomen (Fig. d).

Color: Body brown-black. Antenna and mandible brownish, scape a little lighter. Palpi yellow. Legs brownishyellow.

Unfortunately, we only found a single specimen, with a damaged antenna that prevented flagellomere counts. The specimen differs from Neurateles falcatus in epicnemial carina present (Watanabe 2016), Neurateles asiaticus in upcurved ovipositor, granulate propodeum (Watanabe, 2016), Neurateles compressus in shorter ovipositor (Townes, 1971), Neurateles crassicornis in thicker flagellomeres (Thomson, 1897; Townes, 1971), and from Neurateles alaskensis and Neurateles leucopsis in paler coloration, shorter, straighter ovipositor (Ashmead 1890, 1902; Townes, 1971).

The discovery and formal registration of Neurateles in the Neotropical region, documented by this study, increases the number of Orthocentrinae genera from 18 to 19, confirming Townes (1971).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03B687DC23599E52FF062149EFFBFD44	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
