03A187D23400CF2DFF4EFF217930FD4F.taxon	discussion	The subgenus Leonidasdeanea includes some of the largest species of the genus Wyeomyia. The adults are moderately ornamented with brown scutal scaling with weak greenish-blue reflections, pleura with cream-colored scales, pale scales on the mesopostnotum and an evident pattern of white scaling on the mid- and hindlegs. The combination of characters easily distinguishes species of Leonidasdeanea from most species of the genus Wyeomyia. In addition, females of the subgenus Leonidasdeanea have only one spermathecal capsule. Sexual dimorphism is not only evident in the genitalia, but also in the appearance of the antenna, the flagellum of which is conspicuously more verticillate in males. The male genitalia have tergum IX with about three strong setae and the gonostylus composed of an elongate stem apically divided into four lobes, with lobe C bent backwards into a “ J ” to “ L ” shape; sternum IX in a bilobular shape; and the gonocoxite with more than 10 tergal setae. Pupae have a trumpet index that usually ranges from 4.5 – 5.5; paddles not pointed, essentially truncate; seta 5 - CT usually double; setae 2 - II – VII inserted mesally; seta 6 - VII inserted dorsal. Larvae have maxillae with a rudimentary apical tooth; comb scales arranged in more than one uneven row, not borne on a plate; siphon with seta 2 a-S usually with 2 – 4 aciculate branches and a pecten composed of a single row of slender elongate filaments inserted nearly mid-ventrally.	en	Lourenço-De-Oliveira, Ricardo, Pereira, Glauber Rocha, Neves, Maycon Sabastião Alberto Santos, Santos, Stephani Da Silva, Ribeiro, Paulino Siqueira, Nascimento-Pereira, Agostinho Cardoso, Talaga, Stanislas, Pavan, Márcio Galvão, Sallum, Maria Anice Mureb, Motta, Monique Albuquerque (2026): Systematics of Leonidasdeanea, a new subgenus of Wyeomyia (Diptera: Culicidae), with recognition of Wy. luciae as a valid species and synonymy of Wy. surinamensis with Wy. flui. 03A187D23401CF21FF4EFD617F0DFA9F.taxon	biology_ecology	Bionomics. Larvae of Wy. flui have been found most frequently in water accumulated in leaf axils of palms and palm stumps. We have most frequently collected the immature stages in the leaf axil of buriti palms (Lourenço-de-Oliveira et al. 1999), but they have also been found in leaf axils of açai palms (Euterpe oleracea Mart.) (Kumm & Novis 1938). Peyton et al. (1983) collected larvae in high densities in the matacú palm (genus Attalea Kunth) and suggested a close association of Wy. flui and palm forests. However, larvae were also exceptionally reported to be collected from cut or broken bamboo (Bambusa vulgaris Schrad.) (Heinemann & Belkin 1978 b) and a tree hole (Kumm & Novis 1938). We collected one larva of Wy. flui together with Wy. testei Senevet & Abonnenc, 1939, Wy. (Dodecamyia) aphobema Dyar, 1918 and an undetermined species of Toxorhynchites Teobald, 1901 a in a terrestrial bromeliad (pineapple) in the forest edge in the Amazon with high density of buriti palms (CCULI, http: // cculi. fiocruz. br). Females of Wy. flui have been frequently captured on human bait in the forest during daytime (Bonne & Bonne-Wepster 1925; Kumm & Novis 1938; Deane et al. 1953; Cerqueira 1961; Panday 1975 a, b; Lourenço-de-Oliveira et al. 1999; Pecor et al. 2000), but was once reported biting indoors (Kumm & Novis 1938). The species was also captured in a trap baited with aguti (Kumm & Novis 1938).	en	Lourenço-De-Oliveira, Ricardo, Pereira, Glauber Rocha, Neves, Maycon Sabastião Alberto Santos, Santos, Stephani Da Silva, Ribeiro, Paulino Siqueira, Nascimento-Pereira, Agostinho Cardoso, Talaga, Stanislas, Pavan, Márcio Galvão, Sallum, Maria Anice Mureb, Motta, Monique Albuquerque (2026): Systematics of Leonidasdeanea, a new subgenus of Wyeomyia (Diptera: Culicidae), with recognition of Wy. luciae as a valid species and synonymy of Wy. surinamensis with Wy. flui. Females of Wy. chalcocephala have been reported feeding on humans during daytime, especially near the forest floor (Galindo et al. 1950, 1951; Barreto & Lee 1969). Larvae of Wy. chalcocephala have been found in water in the leaf axils and flower bracts of Heliconia and axils of banana trees (Dyar 1919, 1923, 1928; Dyar & Shannon 1924 a; Arnett 1949; Heinemann & Belkin 1977; Clark-Gil & Darsie 1983), and also in the leaf axils of plants of the family Araceae (skunk cabbage, elephant ear, dumb-cane, taro) (Arnett 1949; Heinemann & Belkin 1977; Pecor et al. 2002). In Araceae, Wy. chalcocephala was reported to be found with Johnbelkinia longipes (Fabricius, 1805), Jb. ulopus (Dyar & Knab, 1906 a), Trichoprosopon pallidiventer (Lutz, 1905 a), Limatus durhamii Theobald, 1901 b, Wy. melanocephala Dyar & Knab, 1906 a, Wy. (Wyo.) pertinans (Williston, 1896) group, Toxorhynchites (Lynchiella) superbus (Dyar & Knab, 1906 b), while in Heliconia larvae were found with Wy. (Decamyia) pseudopecten Dyar & Knab, 1906 a and Wy. (Dec.) ulocoma (Theobald, 1903), and in banana plants with Wy. celaenocephala.	en	Lourenço-De-Oliveira, Ricardo, Pereira, Glauber Rocha, Neves, Maycon Sabastião Alberto Santos, Santos, Stephani Da Silva, Ribeiro, Paulino Siqueira, Nascimento-Pereira, Agostinho Cardoso, Talaga, Stanislas, Pavan, Márcio Galvão, Sallum, Maria Anice Mureb, Motta, Monique Albuquerque (2026): Systematics of Leonidasdeanea, a new subgenus of Wyeomyia (Diptera: Culicidae), with recognition of Wy. luciae as a valid species and synonymy of Wy. surinamensis with Wy. flui.
