Dorsal shield 331 long and 203 wide. Setae j1 25, j3 32, j4 9, j5 9, j6 11, J2 12, J5 7, z2 12, z4 11, z5 9, Z1 11, Z4 12, Z5 72, s4 51, S2 12, S4 13, S5 12, r3 14 and R1 10. Distances between st1–st3 56, st2–st2 70 and st5–st5 84. Ventrianal shield 96 long, 62 wide at level of ZV2 and 67 wide at anus level; JV5 49. Calyx of spermatheca 18 long. Fixed cheliceral digit 29 long, with 9–10 teeth; movable cheliceral digit 28 long and due to the position of the chelicera it was not possible to count the number of teeth in this digit. Leg macrosetae: SgeI 40, SgeII 37, SgeIII 47, SgeIV 69, StiIII 30, StiIV 44 and StIV 80.

Remarks. The measurements are close to the original description, except for macroseta SgeIII, which is approximately 29% longer. The length of seta s4 differs from the specimens measured by Ferragut et al. (2011) from the Dominican Republic, being about 23% shorter. The macroseta SgeIV is 20% longer than the measurements reported for specimens from Peru (Guanilo et al. 2008a). The measurements also closely match those reported by Moraes et al. (2000) for specimens from the French Antilles, and by Abo-Shnaf et al. (2016) for those from Dominican Republic. In Brazil, this species is reported for the first time in the Caatinga biome.

Previous records. In the study by Rocha et al. (2015), the length of the fixed digit of the chelicera is approximately 25% longer. All the specimens cited above were collected in Brazil.

Previous records. Sternal shield smooth, with three pairs of setae and two pairs of lyrifissures (poroids); distances between st1–st3 56 (53–58), st2–st 2 53 (50–59); st4 on metasternal plates. Three pairs of opisthogastric setae on unsclerotised cuticle (JV5, ZV1, ZV3). Seta JV5 13 (12–15) smooth and knobbed. All ventral setae smooth. With two pairs of metapodal plates.

Peritreme. Extending anterior to j1.

Spermatheca (Figures 3C, 6). Calyx funnel-shaped, 13 (9–17) long; atrium indistinct.

Chelicera (Figure 3D). Fixed digit 18 (16–20) long, with four teeth and pilus dentilis; movable digit 17 (15–18) long, with one tooth.

Legs (Figure 3E). Several setae on the legs are slightly thicker, with knobbed tips, and inserted on small tubercles; however, we do not believe any of these setae can be considered macrosetae. In addition, a distinctive ornamentation composed of small cavities or circular depressions can be observed on all legs. Chaetotactic formula of genu II: 2-2/0-2/0-1 and genu III: 1-2/1-2/0-1.

Differential Diagnosis: The new species is morphologically similar to Metaseiulus (Metaseiulus) adjacentis because both species share predominantly smooth dorsal setae. However, it differs in the lengths and morphology of specific setae, as well as in reproductive structures. A key distinguishing feature is seta Z4, which in the new species is smooth and short, contrasting with the serrated and long Z4 found in M. (M.) adjacentis, where it is 2.2 times longer than in the new species. Furthermore, most dorsal setae are 1.15 to 1.77 times longer in M. (M.) adjacentis than in the new species. The sole exception is seta Z5, which is 1.42 times shorter in M. (M.) adjacentis . The new species further differs from other members of the cornus species group by the presence of several knobbed setae (Z4, Z5, s4, S5, r3, R1 and JV5). This contrasts with the typical condition in the group, where these setae have tapered ends. Finally, the species differ in their reproductive anatomy: M. (M.) adjacentis possesses a saccularshaped spermatheca, while in the new species, the spermathecal structure is funnel-shaped.

Etymology: The combination of the name fungicolus (from the Latin fungi and colus, inhabitant of) refers to the numerous fungal structures observed in all collected specimens, suggesting a close association between the mite and the fungi.

Observations

Metaseiulus (Metaseiulus) fungicolus sp. nov. has St1-St3 inserted within the sternal shield, unlike the other species in the cornus group, in which St3 is inserted on a small plate. This discrepancy may be related to the slight sclerotisation of the shield margins, which makes it difficult to determine the exact insertion points of the setae and consequently lead to errors in taxonomic identification. A variation in the insertion of the r3 was also observed: in approximately 55% of the specimens examined, the setae were located within the shield; in about 36%, they were inserted in the cuticle; and in around 9%, one member of the pair was within the shield and the other in the cuticle. All the legs of the new species exhibit ornamentation resembling cavities or circular depressions, as well as knobbed setae inserted in tubercles. In all specimens collected, a large amount of fungal material was observed, including numerous hyphae which hindered the visualization of certain structures such as pores and lyrifissures. This required the use of an alternative specimen-washing method to disperse the fungal elements and improve structural visibility. This association may be related to the species feeding habits.

Type specimens:

Holotype female and fifteen paratype females on Trema micrantha (L.)
