Eupithecia attenuata Moore (1887) . Ceylon [Sri Lanka]. Syntype ♂, Moore Coll., 94–106, Geometridae genitalia slide No. 18911, NHMUK 012823225 (examined) . Other material examined: Sri Lanka, 1 ♂, Kalutara, ex Coll. G.C. Alston, Joicey Bequest. Brit. Mus. 1934-120, July; 1 ♀, Maskeliya, Joicey Bequest. Brit. Mus. 1934-120, November (NHM) .

Moore described the species attenuata in the genus Eupithecia Curtis, noting the purpurescent cinereous-brown colour of the wings and the presence of the “basal, subbasal, antemedial, postmedial [lines], and a less defined submarginal slender whitish-denticulated angulated line” with a larger white central mark on the termen (see Moore 1887). Hampson (1903) listed the species under Gymnoscelis Mabille and added to the description a mention of a green head, tegulae and patagia, and a dark brown abdomen with green scales at the base and towards the apex. Prout (1958) was the first author to assign the species attenuata to Antimimistis . In the survey of the moths of Borneo, Holloway presented a reference to the synonymy of A. attenuata with the type species of the genus, A. illaudata (Holloway 1997), although without making a formal designation, leaving the synonymy rather unclear. The following characteristics complement the description of A. attenuata, namely in the male genitalia the eight sternite with a central asymmetrically bifid, strongly sclerotised process and in the female genitalia the ductus bursae is short, the corpus bursae large, pyriform, with a massive thorn-like spine (see Holloway 1997, Figs. 526, 531).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03A78798B86D5A103C9613D7FF25F8BC	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. The key feature distinguishing the new genus from other genera, particularly Symmimetis (Turner 1907), is the long common stalk shared by veins 4 and 5 (M2 and M3) in the forewing (Turner 1922, p. 229). In his comprehensive survey of the moths of Borneo, Holloway also noted this feature and mentioned the filiform antennae and the large, paddle-like apodemes of the second tergite (see Holloway 1997, Fig. 345).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03A78798B86D5A103CC6145DFA9CFB7C	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Schmidt (OSPC).

Turner described a female, and made no comment on the whitish central mark on the termen (see Turner 1922), probably because the spot on the forewing was not clearly visible. The description presented in the survey of the moths of Borneo (Holloway 1997) does not appear to match A. illaudata exactly. Examination of the external characteristics of the type specimen and the genitalia of other specimens from Kuranda (near the type locality) indicates the differences. Specifically, in males, the sclerotised process on the eighth sternite is less asymmetrical, and in females, the antrum is different and the corpus bursae is elongated rather than pyriform. To clarify this issue, an examination of the genitalia of the types is necessary. Antimimistis illaudata is listed as a good species in Scoble (1999).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03A78798B86D5A133C961017FF1EFE35	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Paratypes: 3 ♂, 1 ♀, same data as holotype (male and female examined) (NHM) .

In the study by Holloway (1997) and in the catalogue by Scoble (1999) the species is included in the genus Antimimistis . The pattern of the upperside of the wings is very similar to the pattern of other Antimimistis species and the apodemes of the second tergite are large and paddle-like. The coppery tone of the postmedian band of the forewings is striking; specimens are also large for the genus, with a wing expanse of 21–26 mm. Examination of the genitalia revealed a remarkable transformation of the central heavily sclerotised process on the eighth abdominal sternite in the males and modifications in the labides in the male genitalia, as well as changes and expansions of the seventh abdominal segment in the females and a considerable reduction in the size of the thorn-like spine in the corpus bursae in the female genitalia. These characteristics appear to distinguish A. cuprina from all other Antimimistis, including the newly described species.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03A78798B86E5A133C96168DFD16FCC5	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
