Body fusiform, gradually widening posterior to the base of the first cephalic annulus, reaching maximum width at midbody, then narrowing gradually toward the anus. Cervical cuticle unarmed. Lateral alae absent. Oral aperture located centrally on the head, circular, diameter ca. 7 µm. Head bearing eight isomorphic, equidistant labiopapillae arranged as two sub-dorsal pairs and two sub-ventral pairs. Labiopapillae trapezoid-like, with the shorter parallel side at the internal margin of the head and the longer side continuous with the head margin. A continuous cuticular cordon delineates the internal margin of the labiopapillae. Amphids lateral, pore-like, barely conspicuous. First cephalic annulus very short, with rounded margins, ca. 1.3 head-lengths long and ca. 1.1 times its diameter. First cephalic annulus set-off from the head by a deep constriction, with the cuticle notably wrinkled. Cuticle annulated from the base of the first cephalic annulus to the anus. The ca. 10 first annuli adjacent to the base of the first cephalic annulus are wider (ca. 2 µm); further down, annuli become shorter (ca. 1 µm). Stoma short, similar in length to the first cephalic annulus. Oesophagus comparatively short, consists of a muscular sub-cylindrical corpus, posterior third slightly narrowing toward the short, almost inconspicuous isthmus. Basal bulb rounded, valve-plate well-developed. Intestine simple, sub-rectilinear, fore region slightly dilated. Rectum comparatively short. Anus a crescent-shaped ventral slit, concave side anteriorly directed, posterior lip slightly prominent. Nerve ring encircling corpus at ca. 52% of its length. Excretory pore ventral, located at ca. 1–1.5 body-widths posterior to the basal bulb. Vulva a median transverse slit located near midbody; lips barely prominent. Vagina muscular, directed anteriorly. Genital tract didelphic-amphidelphic. Anterior ovary reflexed at ca. 2–3 body-widths posterior to the base of the basal bulb. Posterior ovary reflexed at ca. two body-widths anterior to the level of the anus. Oocytes arranged in single rows. Eggs ellipsoidal, smooth-shelled, attached in strings by polar filaments. Tail with anterior portion conical, subulate; posterior portion filiform, its length ca. one third of the total tail length. Amphids pore-like located at ca. 60 µm posterior to anus.

Male. Not found.

Differential diagnosis

Isobinema luisdearmasi sp. nov. resembles I. flagellocercum in several morphometric variables, namely the total length of body (3.16–3.87 mm vs. 2.82–4.09 mm), comparative oesophagus length (b = 8.3–11.2 vs. 8.1–9.1), and comparative tail length (c = 11.5–15.2 vs. 13.4–16.0). However, the new species differs from I. flagellocercum by its comparatively slender body (a = 12.8–15.3 vs. 8.3–11.4) and larger eggs (63–73×37–43 µm vs. 54–60×30–36 µm). Lateral alae are absent in I. luisdearmasi sp. nov., wereas they are present in I. flagellocercum (Rao 1958) .

The new species is similar to I. indicum in body robustness (a = 12.8–15.3 vs. 12.5–13.2) but differs in slightly longer body (3.16–3.87 mm vs. 2.50–2.90 mm), comparatively shorter oesophagus (b = 8.3–11.2 vs. 7.4–8.1) and tail (c = 11.5–15.2 vs. 8.3–8.8), and more posterior vulva (V% = 51.9–54.9 vs. 44.8–48.00).

Isobinema jairajpurii is the largest species of the genus (5.52–5.55 mm vs. 3.16–3.87 mm) and also differs from I. luisdearmasi sp. nov. by its more robust body (a = 8.2 vs. 12.8–15.3) and comparatively shorter oesophagus (b = 14.1–14.4 vs. 8.3–11.2) and tail (c = 30.8–34.5 vs. 11.5–15.2).

Isobinema luisdearmasi sp. nov. and I. neoflagellocercum are similar by their body length (3.16–3.87 mm vs. 3.52 mm) and egg size (63–73×37–43 µm vs. 64–72×48), but the vulva is more posterior in the new species (V% = 51.9–54.9 vs. 41.8).

Type locality. Rice paddy field, Kasugai, Aichi prefecture, Japan; 35°16′26.8″ N, 137°01′9.5″ E.

Type host. Gryllotalpa orientalis Burmeister, 1838 ( Insecta: Orthoptera: Gryllotalpidae).

Site. Hindgut.

Etymology. The specific epithet is dedicated to Dr. Luis F. de Armas Chaviano, an eminent Cuban arachnologist. This name is proposed in homage to his 80th birthday, most of whose years have been devoted to the study of global arachnid diversity.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/039A9F36FFA9FFD8BA9A1058FEC6FF17	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
