Stems ascending, corymbosely branched above, and producing sterile branches up to 30 cm. Leaves of sterile shoots crowded towards apex. Basal leaves 2.1–4 × 1.3–1.6 cm, obovate, densely and alternately arranged, 2-pinnatisect; primary segments elliptic, 5–9 × 2–3.5 mm, 6–7-paired; first 2–4 pairs simple, 1–2.5 mm, lanceolate and mucronate, secondary segments 4–5-paired, 1–2 mm, triangular. Middle and upper cauline leaves 40–70 × 20–35 mm, obovate, alternate, 2-pinnatisect; primary segments elliptic or elliptic-oblong, 13– 20 × 10–21 mm, 5–6-paired, secondary segments 5–6-paired, 3 mm, oblong, simple or sometimes with 1–2 small teeth towards apex. Peduncles up to 25–40 cm. Capitula heterogamous and radiate, 3–8 cm (including ligules). Involucre 15–18 mm in diam., hemispherical. Phyllaries imbricate, 4–5-seriate; outer phyllaries 3–5 × 1–1.5 mm, triangular, spreading hairy; middle phyllaries 7 × 1.5–2 mm, oblong, glabrescent, ciliate at apex; inner phyllaries 7 × 1.5–2 mm, narrowly lanceolate. Receptacle with paleae; palea 5.5 × 1.5 mm, oblanceolate, acuminate, straw coloured. Ray flowers 20–28, white, female; 3-toothed at apex, lamina 16 × 5.5 mm, elliptic; ligule tube glabrous, 2.5 × 0.75–1 mm; stylus 3.5–4 mm, bifurcate. Disc flowers tubular, yellow, hermaphrodite, 3.5 × 0.5–1 mm, 5-lobbed, dilated at base; style to 3 mm, bifurcate. Achenes of ray flowers 1–1.5 × 0.5–1 mm, oblong, cuneate at base, inconspicuously ribbed. Disc achenes straw coloured, 2–3.5 × 1 mm, oblong, narrowed towards base, 5–8-ribbed; corona asymmetric, 0.55–0.6 mm, crenulate.

Distribution: —Endemic to Türkiye, currently known only from Bartın Province (Figure 1).

Ecological notes: — Cota cinerea grows on cliffs, rocky slopes, and shady calcareous outcrops within deciduous forest clearings. It is often found in association with Jurinea mollis (L.) Reichenbach (1831: 290), Centaurea cadmea Boissier (1844: 16), Globularia trichosantha Fischer & Meyer (1839: 36), Astragalus bartinensis Aytaç et al. (2020: 132), Anthemis cretica Linnaeus (1753: 895), Teucrium chamaedrys Linnaeus (1753: 565) and Buxus sempervirens Linnaeus (1753: 983) .

Etymology: —Named for its uniform ash-grey coloration. The species epithet ‘cinerea’ refers to the dense cover of fine ash-grey hairs across the entire surfaces.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/039A87D745720E7980E505BB21824C83	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
