03968794FFEEFFFEFF7CF863FDDEFB09.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis. Discogobio acutusirostris resembles D. angustimarginis, D. antethoracalis, D. elongatus, D. propeanalis, and D. yunnanensis in having a mental adhesive disc large with its posterior edge extending to or beyond the vertical through the anterior edge of eye, and a snout covered with small tubercles. The new species is distinct from these five species in possessing many rows of dark brown spots running along scale rows on the flank (vs. an inconspicuous longitudinal brown band extending the lateral line in D. angustimarginis and D. yunnanensis, or absent in other three species), an unscaled region of the abdomen adjacent to the ventral mid-line restricted only to the bases of pectoral fins (vs. extending to pelvic-fin insertions in D. antethoracalis, D. elongatus and D. propeanalis, or a scaled region in D. yunnanensis and D. angustimarginis), a central fleshy pad slightly papillated (vs. heavily papillated to form a triangular slightly-protruded area except D. angustimarginis), a papillated (vs. non-papillated in D. angustimarginis) posterior edge of the mental adhesive disc, a shorter (vs. longer) snout (length 40.1 – 50.6 % of HL vs. 51.2 – 55.9 in D. antethoracalis), a stout (vs. slender) caudal peduncle (depth 12.7 – 21.2 % of SL vs. 9.5 – 11.5 in D. elongatus), and a shorter (vs. longer) dorsal fin (length 16.7 – 21.0 % of SL vs. 22.4 – 26.7 in D. propeanalis). Data here utilized for D. antethoracalis and D. propeanalis come from Zheng & Zhou (2008).	en	Deng, Shu-Qing, Deng, Chao, Zhang, E. 03968794FFEEFFFEFF7CF863FDDEFB09.taxon	description	Description. Body elongated, cylindrical anteriorly and gradually compressed laterally posterior to dorsal-fin origin towards caudal-fin base, with maximum depth at dorsal-fin origin and minimum caudal-peduncle depth slightly closer to caudal-fin base than to posterior end of anal-fin base. Dorsal profile slightly convex and ventral surface flattened from head to pelvic-fin origin. Head relatively small and depressed, longer than wide and wider than deep. Eye moderately large, positioned dorsolaterally in upper half of head with slightly convex, with broad interorbital space, and closer to posterior margin of gill cover than to snout tip. Snout slightly pointed, bearing a few small tubercles on its tip and anterior portion of lachrymal. Mouth inferior, transverse, and semicircular. Rostral cap coarsely crenulated, covered with papillae, and laterally connected with lower lip around corners of mouth, and separated from upper jaw by deep groove. Upper and lower jaws bearing sharp horny sheaths on cutting their edges. Upper lip absent. Lower lip modified into an adhesive disc on mental region. Central fleshy pad of this disc nearly elliptical, and slightly papillated; horseshoe-shaped skin fold densely covered with papillae; posterior margin distally free, slightly papillated, vertically extending beyond anterior margin of eye. Mental adhesive disc narrower than corresponding head width, and shorter than its width. Anterolateral lobe covered with papillae. Two pairs of barbels; rostral pair rooted at anterior end of lateral groove of snout, and maxillary pair at corner of mouth, shorter than rostral ones. Gill opening extending to ventral surface of head. Dorsal fin with two unbranched and eight branched rays, last one split to base; distal margin slightly concave; origin closer to tip of snout than to caudal-fin base. Pectoral fin with one unbranched and 12 or 13 branched rays, not reaching halfway to pelvic-fin insertion. Pelvic fin with one unbranched and seven or eight branched rays, inserted vertically below third or forth branched dorsal-fin ray; tips of adpressed fins reaching beyond anus and not reaching anal-fin origin; axillary scales present and long, reaching beyond basis of last ray. Anal fin with two unbranched and five branched rays, last one split to base; distal margin slightly concave; origin closer to pelvic-fin insertion than to caudal-fin base. Tip of depressed anal fin not reaching caudal-fin base. Anus closer to anal-fin origin than to pelvic origin. Caudal deeply forked. Scales moderately large. Lateral line complete and almost straight, perforating 40 – 42 scales. Four scales between dorsal-fin origin and lateral line; three scales between pelvic-fin origin and lateral line. Naked on the chest and scaled on the abdomen. Predorsal scales regularly arranged, and not embedded beneath skin. Circumpeduncular scales 16. Coloration. In formalin-preserved specimens, head and body brown dorsally and laterally, without blackish longitudinal strip along lateral line. Ground color of body dark or light brown dorsally, becoming yellowish ventrally. Each scale on flank with a dark brown crescent exposed portion, giving a body coloration of many rows of dark brown spots extending along each scale row on flank and becoming faded downwards. Dorsal, anal and caudal fins brown without marks or blotches. Pectoral and pelvic fins yellowish with dark yellow base.	en	Deng, Shu-Qing, Deng, Chao, Zhang, E. 03968794FFEEFFFEFF7CF863FDDEFB09.taxon	distribution	Distribution and Habitat. Discogobio acutusirostris is hitherto known from the Yuanjiang River, in which it was misidentified as D. yunnanensis by Wu (1989) and Yang et al. (2022), and also from the Xiangjiang River where it was misidentified by Cao et al. (2012) as D. tetrabarbatus, two affluents of the Dongting Lake (Fig. 3) (see explanation in the discussion). This new species inhabits in fast-flowing waters (Fig. 4).	en	Deng, Shu-Qing, Deng, Chao, Zhang, E. 03968794FFEEFFFEFF7CF863FDDEFB09.taxon	etymology	Etymology. The specific epithet, here used as a noun, is derived from the Latin word acutus, meaning pointed, and rostris, meaning snout, in reference to the pointed snout of this new species. The Chinese name for this new species is “ Jiān Wěn Pán Jū ” (尖吻Dzü).	en	Deng, Shu-Qing, Deng, Chao, Zhang, E.
