038B144B6344C12ACDF4FC6278A2FE10.taxon	diagnosis	Differential diagnosis. Suphisellus cucuminoi sp. nov. shows a certain similarity with S. flavopictus, S. transversus, and S. hieroglyphicus, where a comparison with S. minimus is not possible for the reasons explained above. It can be readily distinguished from the former two by its smaller size (TL <1.9 mm), while it is similar in size to S. hieroglyphicus from which it can be distinguished for a less convex body shape (Fig. 7), elytra with irregular spots (Fig. 5), and a narrow prosternal process with straight lateral margins (Fig. 32). In contrast, S. hieroglyphicus has a wedge-shaped body (Fig. 10), elytra with a marbled pattern of dark bands on a brownish-red background (Figs 2, 8), and a relatively broad prosternal process with curved lateral margins (Fig. 9). Regarding male genitalia, S. cucuminoi sp. nov. and S. hieroglyphicus exhibit a high degree of morphological similarity. However, they can be reliably distinguished by the shape of the median lobe which, in lateral view, the new species shows a widening around distal third and a rounded apex (Fig. 16), whereas in S. hieroglyphicus this widening is absent and the apex is acute (Fig. 22).	en	Urcola, Juan I., Fery, Hans, Michat, Mariano C. 038B144B6344C12ACDF4FC6278A2FE10.taxon	etymology	Etymology. The new species described in this study was first documented by Grosso (1979) in his doctoral thesis, under the name Suphisellus cucuminoi, a name we retain here as a tribute to Grosso’s original contribution. The epithet cucuminoi was dedicated by Grosso to his youngest son, Nicolás, who was affectionately nicknamed “ Cucumino ” in the family. It is a noun in the genitive case.	en	Urcola, Juan I., Fery, Hans, Michat, Mariano C. 038B144B6344C12ACDF4FC6278A2FE10.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Due to the loss of the type material and the limited information available in the original description, the identity of S. minimus remains uncertain. Since the male genitalia were not described, it is not possible to determine whether S. minimus represents a valid species, a synonym of S. hieroglyphicus, or even is conspecific with S. cucuminoi sp. nov. Until the type material is rediscovered, or additional evidence becomes available, S. minimus should be regarded as a species inquirenda.	en	Urcola, Juan I., Fery, Hans, Michat, Mariano C. 038B144B634FC12ACDF4FE257F55F86A.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis (male). Very small (TL = 1.7 – 1.9 mm); body wedge-shaped, widest at anterior third of elytra; background color brownish-red, head with (Fig. 8) or without (Fig. 2) a dark spot on occipital region, elytra with marbled pattern of irregular dark bands (Figs 2, 8, 10); head impunctate; pronotum with fine and sparse punctation near posterior margin; elytra with weak punctation; prosternum with one distinctive transverse row of 1 – 2 stiff setae, anterior to procoxae and prosternal process; prosternal process (Fig. 9) relatively broad, narrow between procoxae, then widening into subtriangular plate with lateral slightly curved margins. Male genitalia as in Figs 17 – 22, 39 – 42. Posterior margin of tergite IX bilobed, asymmetric, right one slightly projecting backward; sternite IX apically projected and slightly bilobed, with 1 – 2 spine-like setae arranged in two groups and several hair-like setae (Fig. 17). Aedeagus: right lateral lobe in lateral view (Figs 18, 40) robust, slightly curved, with two tufts of long setiform setae, one at mid-length formed by subequal setae, and another at apex with setae progressively increasing in length; median lobe (Figs 20 – 22, 42) robust, in lateral view gradually narrowing toward acute apex, slightly curved dorsally; left lateral notch reduced (Fig. 20); in dorsal view slightly curved to right side (Fig. 21). 038B144B634FC12ACDF4FE257F55F86A.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Comparison with the male genitalia of the lectotype of S. hieroglyphicus (Figs 39 – 42) confirms that the specimens collected in Argentina belong to this species. As mentioned above, the species was previously recorded from Argentina (Corrientes Province) by Torres et al. (2012), but these records refer to S. cucuminoi sp. nov. The present finding constitutes the first reliable record of the species for Argentina and extends its known distribution over 700 km to the southeast from its type locality in Corumbá (Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil) to Iguazú National Park (Misiones Province, Argentina) (Fig. 46). Although Alois Zimmermann mounted a “ Type ” label (Fig. 2) on one of the two specimens he had studied, he did not explicitly designate a holotype in his publication. The red label without any text (Fig. 2) was undoubtedly mounted by a curator of the ZSM after Zimmermann’s collection came to this institution. It is well known that several specimens in that collection were provided with such red labels (often also with printed “ Typus ” or similar), which must be classified as “ unauthorized curatorial action ” (pers. com. by G. Scherer (†), former curator of the ZSM).	en	Urcola, Juan I., Fery, Hans, Michat, Mariano C. 038B144B634EC12ECDF4F8B87FC3FCC4.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis (male). Small size (TL = 2.0 – 2.2 mm); body oval; head and pronotum brownish-orange (Fig. 3); elytra black with light spots with following distribution: two subbasal subcircular spots, one anteromedially and one at shoulder, one group of coalescent spots forming a transverse band in middle region, interrupted at mid-elytron, and then connected posteriorly with one oblique spot extending to suture (Fig. 3); head impunctate; pronotum with fine and sparse punctation near posterior margin; elytra with weak punctation; prosternum with distinctive transverse row of 2 – 3 stiff setae anterior to procoxae and prosternal process; prosternal process narrow between procoxae, then expanding into triangular plate with rounded posterior margin. Male genitalia as in Figs 23 – 28, 43 – 45. Posterior margin of tergite IX bilobed, barely symmetric; sternite IX apically projected and slightly bilobed, with several hair-like setae arranged in two groups (Fig. 23). Aedeagus: right lateral lobe in lateral view (Figs 24, 43) thin, slightly curved, with a row of setiform setae on distal third, denser at apex forming a tuft; left lateral lobe broad (Figs 25, 44); median lobe (Figs 26 – 28, 45) robust, in lateral view of almost uniform width along most of its length, slightly curved dorsally, apex rounded; in dorsal view, slightly curved to left side (Fig. 27). Measurements. TL = [1.95 – 2.15 mm, mean = 2.08 mm]; GW = [1.05 – 1.2 mm, mean = 1.15 mm]; TL / GW = [1.75 – 1.85, mean = 1.80]; TLVP = [0.8 – 0.95 mm, mean = 0.9 mm]; HW = [0.55 – 0.65 mm, mean = 0.61 mm]; EW = [0.3 – 0.35 mm, mean = 0.32 mm]. Variability. In many examined specimens of S. flavopictus the anteromedial circular spot as well as the posterior oblique spot on the elytra are absent. The pronotum and head also show darkened areas, resembling the pattern observed in S. transversus (Fig. 4).	en	Urcola, Juan I., Fery, Hans, Michat, Mariano C. 038B144B634EC12ECDF4F8B87FC3FCC4.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Suphisellus flavopictus (Fig. 3) and S. transversus (Fig. 4) are very similar externally. Grosso (1979) pointed out that Régimbart described S. transversus based on material collected in Buenos Aires, Argentina — belonging to S. flavopictus, which he had described 14 years earlier — based solely on differences in coloration and elytral markings. However, given the high variability of these patterns and other external characters, and the uniform morphology of the male genitalia, Grosso concluded that S. transversus should be treated as a junior synonym of S. flavopictus. Nevertheless, examination of the male genitalia of the type specimen of S. transversus is necessary to confirm these observations and formally establish the proposed synonymy. It is worth noting that S. transversus was originally described from three specimens, two of which are housed in MSNG, whereas the third one is considered lost (R. Poggi and A. Mantilleri, pers. comm.).	en	Urcola, Juan I., Fery, Hans, Michat, Mariano C.
