038E87E6FFC78C5726791AD9FC3FFE98.taxon	description	Within the amphibian-like living animals, except turtles, for nearly no other group than the newts it is so much needed for the distinction between the species to know all of their age-related differences, therefore I also do not dare to give speciesdefining criteria from this Japanese one, because I have seen it only in half-grown-up state. In this it resembles a Molge palustris in the same life period, and without knowing its homeland I would have considered it to be a mere variety of the aforementioned. The total length of one specimen is 89.3 mm, of which 45.8 mm are allotted to the tail; [the total length] of another specimen is 100.2 mm, of the tail 45.8 mm. The form of the head, body and tail are just the same as with palustris. All upper parts are dark blackish brown, densely beset with pustules; the dorsal stripe is bulging, nearly slick, yellowish; the underside of body and tail are flame red; particularly the belly is beset with round dark blotches. The Salamandra japonica of Houttuyn, and the Lacerta japonica of Thunberg, of which I saw several metallic replicas in the Ethnographic Museum in The Haag, seem to be totally different species.	en	Otani, Sean, Duensser, Elmar (2020): English translation of the original description of Cynops pyrrhogaster Boie, 1826.
