Molge pyrrhogaster m.

Within the amphibian-like living animals, except turtles, for nearly no other group than the newts it is so much needed for the distinction between the species to know all of their age-related differences, therefore I also do not dare to give speciesdefining criteria from this Japanese one, because I have seen it only in half-grown-up state. In this it resembles a Molge palustris in the same life period, and without knowing its homeland I would have considered it to be a mere variety of the aforementioned.

The total length of one specimen is 89.3 mm, of which 45.8 mm are allotted to the tail; [the total length] of another specimen is 100.2 mm, of the tail 45.8 mm. The form of the head, body and tail are just the same as with palustris . All upper parts are dark blackish brown, densely beset with pustules; the dorsal stripe is bulging, nearly slick, yellowish; the underside of body and tail are flame red; particularly the belly is beset with round dark blotches. The Salamandra japonica of Houttuyn, and the Lacerta japonica of Thunberg, of which I saw several metallic replicas in the Ethnographic Museum in The Haag, seem to be totally different species.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/038E87E6FFC78C5726791AD9FC3FFE98	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
