S. Jiang 2025

Swertia muliensis Qi Yu & L.S. Jiang, sp. nov. (Figs. 1 & 2).

Type:— CHINA. Sichuan: Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Muli Tibetan Autonomous County, Yalong River Town, 27°55'31"N, 101°16'51"E, elev. ca. 2225 m, under the bushes in the valley, 11 September 2023, ZYCE 2023 (holotype CDBI!; isotypes CDBI!). It is similar to Swertia binchuanensis and S. mussotii in having yellow and stout fibrous roots, erect and subquadrangular glabrous stems branched from the base, basal leaves deciduous at anthesis, sessile stem leaves, and nectaries two per corolla lobe, but differs in having yellow-green corolla (vs. yellow and dark purplish-red), oblong-oval nectary (vs. slenderly oblong and oblong), larger nectary-to-petal width ratio (2/3 as wide as petal vs. 1/5 as wide as petal and 1/4 as wide as petal), raised margin of nectary towards base of the petal with relatively longer fimbriae while the remaining part has fewer shorter fimbriae (vs. entire raised margin with many long fimbriae, and entire raised margin with few short fimbriae), stigma lobes capitate (vs. suborbicular and suborbicular) (Tab. 1).

Herbs annual, 28–58 cm tall. Roots yellow, stout, fibrous. Stems erect, 1–6 mm in diam., subquadrangular, narrowly winged on angles, branched from base. Basal leaves usually withered at anthesis. Stem leaves sessile, narrowly lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, 1–6 × 0.2–1.3 cm, apex acuminate, base auriculate and subamplexicaul, margin ciliolate and slightly revolute, apex acuminate, veins 3. Inflorescences many-flowered panicles formed by whole plant. Flowers 4-merous. Pedicel erect, 0.5–4.5 cm, quadrangular, slender. Calyx 1/2 to 2/3 as long as corolla, tube 1–2 mm; lobes 6– 11 mm, linear-lanceolate, margin ciliolate, apex acuminate and apiculate, veins 3. Corolla yellow-green with purplishbrown veins, 1.5–1.8 cm in diam., tube 2–4 mm; lobes ovate-lanceolate, 1–1.5 cm, apex acuminate and apiculate. Nectaries 2 per corolla lobe near base of the petal, oblong-oval, boat-shaped, 3–4 × 1 mm, 1/3 as long as petal, 2/3 as wide as petal, raised margin of the nectary towards base of the petal with long fimbriae, remaining part with fewer shorter fimbriae. Filaments 4–5 mm, linear; anthers ellipsoid, 1–1.5 mm. Ovary ovoid-ellipsoid, 5–12 mm. Style stout and indistinct; stigma lobes capitate. Capsules and seeds immature during specimen collection.

Phenology: —Flowering and fruiting from July to September.

Distribution and habitat: —It is found in Muli Tibetan Autonomous County and Jiulong County of Sichuan Province (Fig. 3), growing beneath the valley scrub of the Yalong River Basin at elevations of 2200–2400 m.

Conservation status: —Due to the absence of further exploration in adjacent similar habitats at present, the assessment of S. muliensis is therefore categorized as data deficient (DD) according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria (IUCN Standards and Petitions Committee 2024).

Etymology: —The specific epithet muliensis refers to the county name,Muli, where the type locality administratively belongs to. Its Chinese name, mù lǐ zhāng yá cài (†Ħḛff̿), is also suggested here.

Additional specimens examined: — CHINA. Sichuan: Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Jiulong County, Bawo Long Township, 28°52'25"N, 101°11'30"E, elev. ca. 2397 m, under the bushes in the valley, 27 July 2022, CIBSC0225 (CDBI!).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03816119F920FFF5FF17CA358411F951	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
