Z. Li & Z. Liu 2025

Udara (Udara) placidula inayoshii H.Z. Li & Z. Liu subsp. nov.

(Chinese name: 圆¤妩ĭxŝ南亚ª)

urn:lsid:zoobank.org:act: E9AA6565-30FB-459C-8ADD-20F6732A1411

(Figs. 1 for adults, 2 for genitalia, 3 for diagnosis, 4 for distribution, 5 for phylogeny)

Holotype: ♂, Jianfengling, Hainan, China, ca. 800 m, 20.XII.2024, Z. Liu leg. (UPI1; will be deposited at CMNH) . Paratypes: 7 ♂♂, 8.I.2025 for UPI2–3, 5–6, 6.II.2025 for UPI4, 14.III.2025 for UPI7, 10.III.2025 for UPI8 . 1 ♀, 10.III.2025 for UPI9. All Z. Liu leg. with same locality as the HT (CZL) .

Description: Male. Upperside: Ground color purple blue with black margin. Forewing markings filled from base to postdiscal area. Hindwing markings similar but not extended to costa and dorsum with addition lunate spots present in submargin. Underside: background pale gray. Markings mostly dark gray. Forewing cell bar present; postdiscal spots irregular, running from spaces 1b to 6, with an occasional spot sometimes in space 8; submarginal stripes continuous from spaces 1b to 6, accompanied by separate marginal spots. Hindwing cell bar present; base adorned with four black subbasal spots in spaces 1, 1a, 7, and cell; postdiscal spots rather irregular, located from spaces 1b to 7 with a spot in space 7 black and larger; submarginal stripes wavy, with black marginal spots outside.

Male Genitalia. Tegumen ill-developed, reduced to a narrow band with lower remnant slightly enlarged. Sociuncus paired, hairy, and elliptical, separated from tegumen by translucent lateral fenestrulae. Vinculum ventrally tapered, ending in a posterior triangular shape; vinculum hump simple, laterally straight and blunt. Valva more or less rectangle and robust, with small apical serrations. Juxa V-shaped. Phallus bent at ductus, less than a right angel, terminating in specialized structure of Chapman’s process; cornuti long and prominent.

Diagnosis. The new subspecies can be distinguished from all the other subspecies of U. placidula by (Fig. 3): Marginal black border on the upperside of the both wings is usually broader, leaving the blue submarginal lunules on the hindwing separated from the rest of the markings, rather than merged into one.

Distribution. Endemic to Hainan Is., China.

Etymology. The subspecific name is dedicated to Mr.Yutaka Inayoshi, the author of “A Check List of Butterflies in Indo-China,” who also provided taxonomic assistance to the first author over the years.

Variation. This new subspecies is variable to some extent in size, wing shape and pattern, and genitalia (Figs. 1–2). These variations are interpreted as individual variations due to the low genetic distance in COI and EF-1α (Fig. 5).

Remarks. The female is identified by the molecular evidence (Figs. 1, 5). Since only one individual was available, the description and diagnosis for females are not provided.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/0385A84EFFFAFF95FF3956C0FC2E4DFA	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
