(Figs. 1–4).

Diagnosis:— Michauxia mormoriana is similar to M. nuda A.DC., M. stenophylla Boiss. & Hausskn. and M. tchihatcheffii Fisch. & C.A.Mey., but is distinguished from M. stenophylla by its broadly campanulate, erecto-patent corolla (vs. narrowly campanulate), a corolla divided to 1/3–2/3 of its length (vs. 1/7–1/3), smaller flowers (20–23 mm vs. 20–33 mm), smaller calyx appendages (3.5–5 mm vs. 4–6 mm), leaves shortly hirsute on the margin and lower (abaxial) surface (vs. shortly hirsute on both sides) and a style 11–14 mm long (vs. 15–20 mm). It is distinguished from M. nuda by its leaves shortly hirsute on the margin and lower (abaxial) surface (vs. hirsute on both sides), larger flowers (20–23 mm vs. 18–20 mm), a spike-like inflorescence (vs. paniculate-racemose, with spike-like lateral branches), larger calyx appendages (3.5–5 mm vs. about 1–3 mm), a style hairy along its entire length (vs. hairy on the lower 3/4) and calyx lobes 4–6 mm long (vs. 5–10 mm). It is distinguished from M. tchihatcheffii by its glabrous stem (vs. densely patent-hirsute), solitary flowers (vs. flowers borne on short stalks, either solitary or in small clusters), and a corolla divided to 1/3–2/3 of its length (vs. 1/2) (Table 1).

Type:— IRAN. Ilam province: Kalat, Mormori, Mount Kase Mas, 780 m a.s.l. (32.793916 N, 47.636772 E), 27 June 2025, Rastegari 11142 (holotype RANK!) .

Etymology:— The specific epithet “mormoriana ” refers to Mormori County in Ilam Province, western Iran, indicating the geographic origin of the species.

Distribution and habitat:— Michauxia mormoriana is known only from a very restricted area in Mount Kase Mas, Kalat, within Ilam province. Some species that share the new species immediate surrounding habitat include Carthamus oxyacanthus M.Bieb., Nerium oleander L., Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud., Pulicaria arabica (L.) Cass., Salvia syriaca L. and Teucrium scordium L. It belongs to the Sahara-Sindian floristic zone of Iran (Takhtajan 1986).

Description:— Biennial; stem 60–120 cm tall, erect, usually simple, glabrous, densely leafy in lower parts. Leaves sparsely hirsute at base, shortly hirsute on margin and lower (abaxial) surface; basal leaves short-petiolate, oblong to broadly lanceolate, dentate to lobed, slightly lyrate, 18–27 cm long, 4–9 cm wide, sinuate and irregularly dentate; cauline leaves sessile, oblong, oblong-lanceolate. Inflorescence long, spicate; flowers solitary, white, sessile or with very short pedicel up to 0.2 cm, spreading; calyx lobes 4–6 mm long, 0.9–1.5 mm wide, triangular-lanceolate, shortly hirsute on margin and middle nerves, with short appendages, 3.5–5 mm long, 0.8–1.1 mm wide, lanceolate, bristly; corolla 20–23 mm, broadly campanulate, divided to 1/3–2/3; lobes 10–11, elliptic-elongate to ovate-suborbiculate, spreading, patent to suberect, erect-patent to patent, glabrous, scabrid outside on middle nerves; style 11–14 mm, hairy along its entire length; capsule obconic, 8–10-ribbed, dehiscing by 8–10 valves at base; seeds numerous (Figs. 1–4).

Phenology:— Flowering in June–July, fruiting in July–August.

Conservation status:— According to our observation, the number of individuals of M. mormoriana is low and therefore the species is obviously in danger. The population size of the new species is very small and the numbers of individuals is less than 250. The distribution of M. mormoriana is restricted to a single location and an area less than 100 km ² (criterion B1). We suggest that this species should be placed under the IUCN category ‘Critically Endangered’ (CR) (IUCN 2024).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/0384A669FF89AD49FF343299FE8EFDAE	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
