Miyatake (1961b) originally described C. formosana based on single female specimen from Taiwan Island without precise locality. Yang & Wu (1972) firstly described and illustrated the male genitalia of C. formosana based on two specimens from Taiwan Island. The descriptions and illustrations of male features of C. formosana were further given by Ren et al. (2009) and Wang & Chen (2022), however, those descriptions and illustrations were based on single male specimen from Jiangxi Prov., and the species is not the ‘true’ C. formosana . After examining the male specimens from Taiwan Island and compared them with the specimens from Chinese mainland and illustrations by Yang & Wu (1972), we found that the specimens from Taiwan are constant with some specimens from Guangdong: They are characterized by robust and digitiform left paramere, comparatively blunt and short penis guide (Fig. 6a, b, h, j) and rectangular outer arm of penis capsule (Fig. 1o).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03F8AF76FFF80C74649D4F04411F4A51	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. However, its identity likely requires clarification based on both morphological and molecular evidence.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03F8AF76FFFE0C77649D4E2841954CC5	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. The immature stages of Catanella are herein described and illustrated for the first time. Kamiya (1965) recorded the larvae of Serangium japonicum Chapin, 1940 . Sasaji (1968) later recorded those of both Serangium japonicum and Serangium punctum Miyatake, 1963 . Huang et al. (2024) described Serangium xinpingense Huang & Wang, 2024 with additional descriptions of its immature stages, while Poorani (2024) further expanded the knowledge of the immature stages of Serangium chapini (Kapur, 1956) and Serangium parcesetosum Sicard, 1929 . Comparing with the larvae of Serangium (Kamiya 1965: fig. 7C; Sasaji 1968: fig. 1B; Huang et al. 2024: figs 1d, 1e, 5a, 5b; Poorani 2024: figs 6a–d, 12a, 12b, 13a, 13b), Catanella acuta bears more compacted body (Figs 4a–c, 5c–f). Maxilla and labium of larvae in Serangium are poorly studied in the past, comparing with S. xinpingense: head capule is nearly rounded in C. acuta (Fig. 4f) but subovoid in S. xinpingense (Huang et al. 2024: fig. 5d); maxillary palp and labial palpi distinctly shortened in C. acuta (Fig. 4f) but elongate and slender in S. xinpingense (Huang et al. 2024: fig. 5i, j).

Ren et al. (2009) illustrated Catanella formosana based on a male Catanella specimen from Jiangxi Province. The illustration of C. formosana was subsequently modified from Ren et al. (2009) by Wang & Chen (2022). However, the identity of Catanella formosana in both Ren et al. (2009) and Wang & Chen (2022) is herein determined to represent C. acuta sp. nov. The male specimen from Jiangxi Province is therefore designated as a paratype of Catanella acuta sp. nov. in the present study.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03F8AF76FFFD0C7D649D489C47AC4C8C	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
