Wu & Z. Z. Li 2025

Utricularia damingshanensis S. Wu & Z. Z. Li sp. nov. (Fig. 2)

Type: — CHINA. Guangxi: Nanning City, Damingshan, 23°29'24.0"N, 108°26'24.0"E, elev. 1229 m, 12 June 2025, S. Wu Utri 003 (holotype: GXMG barcode GXMG0263821!, isotype GXMG barcode GXMG0263822!) .

Diagnosis: —The new species differs from U. warburgii and U. caerulea by having a corolla palate with four hooked processes on the distal margin; lower calyx lobe distinctly shorter than the upper; distinctly striped corolla with 8–15 deep violet lines on the lower lip and 6–9 radiating lines on the upper lip, as well as a helmet-like swelling at the base of the lower lip; flowering time from April to August (Table 1).

Small annual, terrestrial herb. Rhizoids few, hair-like, simple, up to 7 mm long; stolons few, filiform, branched, 15–35 mm long. Leaves numerous, solitary, arising from the base of the peduncle or at stolon nodes; petiolate; lamina narrowly obovate-cuneate, 10–15 mm long, 0.5–1.5 mm wide, base gradually attenuate into the petiole, margin entire, with a single vein, apex rounded. Traps few, borne between stolon internodes and on leaf margins; ovoid, 0.8–1.3 mm long, stalked with stalks 0.4–0.8 mm long; mouth lateral, with several stalked glands along the margin; dorsal appendage single, beak-shaped. Inflorescence erect, 50–100 mm tall, with 2–5 flowers; peduncle terete, ca. 1.3 mm long; scales few, similar to bracts. Bracts free at base, ovate, ca. 1 mm long, base truncate, margin finely denticulate, apex gradually acute; bracteoles free at base, oblong, slightly shorter than bracts, base subrounded, apex acute. Calyx lobes slightly convex, minutely papillose, glabrous; lower lobe oblong, smaller than the upper; upper lobe broadly ovate, 1–2.5 mm long, apex rounded. Corolla pale bluish-purple, ca. 5 mm long; lower lip broadly ovate with 8–15 deep violet parallel stripes, base raised into a helmet-like swelling with yellow markings, apex rounded; spur conical, about twice as long as the lower lip, with pale yellow blotches at the throat and corolla plate with four hooked processes on the distal margin; upper lip obovate to cuneate, apex rounded with or without a shallow notch, bearing 6–9 radiating deep violet stripes. Stamens with filaments straight, ca. 1 mm long; anther thecae distinct. Ovary ovoid; style short; stigma with lower lip triangular and upper lip semicircular. Fruit not observed.

Distribution and habitat: —Currently known only from Damingshan, Guangxi, China. It primarily grows on moist rock faces or in marshy areas along mountain streams at elevations above 1200 m.

Phenology: —Observed flowering from April to August.

Etymology: —The Da Ming Shan Wa Er Cao (大fiƜĒƦẬ). The specific epithet is derived from “Damingshan”, the type locality of the species.

Conservation status: —Currently known only from a small area in Damingshan, Guangxi, China. Although it may also occur in adjacent regions, this requires further targeted field surveys. To date, approximately 100 individuals have been documented. Due to insufficient data on its population size and geographic distribution, a comprehensive assessment of its conservation status is not currently possible. We therefore recommend that the species be classified as Data Deficient (DD) under the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria (IUCN, 2012).

Other specimens examined (paratypes): — CHINA.
