Long & D. K. Zhao 2025

Liparis cordicallosa B. Long & D.K. Zhao, sp. nov. (Òḁ¥Ʀũ, Fig. 1, 2 A, 3 a–h)

Type: — CHINA. Yunnan, Honghe City, Mengzi County, Lengquan Town, evergreen broadleaved forests alt. 1800 m, 22 June 2019, B. Long & D. K. Zhao 087 (holotype: YUKU! 02074886, isotypes YUKU! 02074887 & 02074888)).

Diagnosis: — Liparis cordicallosa is most similar to L. distans, but it can be distinguished by its new pseudobulb being enveloped by two clasping basal foliaceous sheaths, and a thick waxy, oblong lip which is recurved at the base and deflexed above middle, with a Ushape grooved and heart-shaped callus at its base, and an obtuse rostellum (Table 3 and Fig. 3).

Description: —Epiphytic herbs. Pseudobulbs are densely arranged, usually ovoid, 1–5 cm × 0.5–2.0 cm, the new one enveloped by 2 clasping basal foliaceous sheaths. Leaves 2, blade oblanceolate, 10–20 cm × 1–2 cm, papery, apex acuminate, attenuate from apex to base, contracted into a short petiole at base, petiole 2–4 cm, articulate. Inflorescence recurved, 12–20 cm long; peduncle somewhat compressed, with narrow wings 1–2 mm wide on both sides, in upper part with 1 or 2 subulate sterile bracts; rachis 4.5–10 cm long, loosely 3–10 flowered, 1.25–2.2cm apart. Floral bracts nearly subulate, 4–10 mm long, membranous. Flowers yellow-greenish or orange; pedicel and ovary 7–15 mm. Dorsal sepal linear, 10 × 2 mm, with revolute margin and acute apex; lateral sepals often slightly shorter than dorsal sepal, 8 × 1 mm. Petals nearly filiform, 10 × 1 mm, obtuse at apex; Lip fleshy, waxy, broadly oblong, 8–10 × 4–6 mm, base narrowed into very short claw, lip recurved at base, deflexed above middle, with a U-shape grooved and heart-shaped callus, middle part with a thick green longitudinal lamella extending from callus base to margin. Margin somewhat irregularly denticulate, truncate or rounde and obtuse at apex. Column slightly arcuate at the front, 6–7 mm, slightly dilated at base, upper part winged, strongly arcuate from middle to apex, rostellum obtuse.

Phenology: —Flowers and fruits have been recorded from October to March.

Etymology: —The specific epithet “ cordicallosa ” refers to the heart-shaped callus on the labellum.

Distribution and ecology: —Lengquan Town, Mengzi County, Honghe City, Yunnan Province, China. It is a predominantly epiphytic species that grows in the evergreen broadleaved forest at an elevation of 1800 m.

Conservation status: —During our field surveys in 2019, about 100 mature individuals of L. cordicallosa were found at 2 locations around Mengzi county, Yunnan province, China. Therefore, we classified the conservation status of this novel species as Data Deficient (DD) according to IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria (IUCN 2024).

Notes: — Liparis cordicallosa is morphologically most similar to L. distans, these two species were compared in the Diagnosis above. Some of the morphological features to distinguish between L. cordicallosa and L. distans are also provided in Table 3 and Fig. 2 & 3.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03FE87C6FFA02C4B35F5F9BFFDE6FEE1	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
