The fertile branches sometimes have leaflets along the inflorescence axis, and these become hairy after anthesis. P. barbata resembles P. densiflora mainly because of the shape of the fruit, the elliptic-lanceolate leaflets, and the prolate bud, inflated hypanthium, and because of their overlapping geographic distribution. However, P. barbata has smooth, grayish bark with scaly branches, non-falcate leaflets, and glands, while P. densiflora has scaly, brown bark with striate branches, falcate leaflets, and no glands.

Etymology —The specific epithet barbata is an allusion to the presence of trichomes only on the abaxial region of the carpel.

Specimens examined — BRAZIL. In Pará, it occurs near the Trombetas River, in the Três Ilhas grassland (Oriximiná). In Amazonas, it occurs in the campinaranas of São Gabriel da Cachoeira. In Manaus, it occurs with some frequency, mainly on the margins of Igarapés (Fig 5). The species is restricted to the Amazon region.

Taxonomic comments— Peltogyne campestris has as distinguishing characteristics the obtuse or rounded leaf apex, the undilated pulvinus and the non-decurrent blade (Ribeiro et al. 1999, Silva 1976). The species has persistent bracteoles until pre-anthesis, which contrast with the color of the sepals, giving it one of the most attractive aspects among all species of the genus. This species is often confused with P. catingae, mainly due to the shape of the leaflets. However, P. catingae has leaves with acute to acuminate apex, a dilated pulvinus, and a non-decurrent blade. Ducke (1922) described P. rigida as similar to P. campestris . Later, analyses by Silva (1976) indicated that this species is a variety of P. campestris, since the only difference between the two is the pubescence of the ovary and the size of the fruit. According to Sandquist et al. (1997), the increase or decrease in pilosity in a species can vary depending on whether the environment is humid or dry. In our analyses, we conclude that P. rigida is a synonym of P. campestris, since the observed differences in pilosity may be related to the degree of humidity of the environments, as we observed glabrous and less frequently also pilose ovaries in the same specimen. The size of the fruit does not provide enough justification to separate the species because this trait varies within the genus, especially in the species P. confertiflora and P. pauciflora .

Etymology— campestris, relating to fields or flat areas.

Specimens examined — BRAZIL. Ducke RB23277 (Holotype: RB!; Isotypes: K, P, U, US). Fig 10.

Tree or treelet, 15–20 m tall, bark smooth, thin, greyish, branches strongly rough, greyish, but blackish at the apex, stipules early deciduous. Leaflets elliptic–obovate (sometimes elliptic – oblong), not falcate, 9–18 x 5–6 cm, base rounded, apex acute, glabrous, wax absent on both surfaces, concolorous, petiole (7–) 18–25 mm long, petiolule (4–) 8– 10 mm long, blade not decurrent, pulvinus dilated, primary vein conspicuous abaxially, secondary veins conspicuous on both sides, glands absent. Inflorescence a panicle, terminal or subterminal, densiflorous, rachis glabrous, 13–17 cm long, inserted in a non aphyllous branch. Pedicel 2–5 mm long, bracteoles persistente, pilose, hypanth present, 5–7 x 3– 4 mm, obconic. Bud 5–7 x 9–10 mm, sepals subtriangular, outer side tomentose, inner side pubescent, margin glabrous, glands not observed, petals oblanceolate to linear, unguiculate, glabrous, glands present. Stamens of different sizes, antesepalous filaments 5–13 mm long, antepetalous filaments 2–7 mm long. Stipe glabrous with sparse trichomes, 1–2 mm long. Ovary semicircular, commonly D-shaped, glabrous, with sparse trichomes, 2–3 mm long, style with terminal insertion, 10–17 mm long. Fruit a legume, indehiscent, orbicular, without a protuberance, compressed, 3.5–4 x 2.8–3 cm long, stipitate, nectary disc not persistent, glabrous, glands absent, veins present, winged.

Phenology —Collected in flower from November to March and in fruit in May.

Distribution and habitat— Peltogyne catingae is restricted to the state of Amazonas, found on the banks of the Içana River, in the Upper Rio Negro region, frequently around Manaus and on the banks of the highway between Manaus and Boa Vista (Fig 4).

Taxonomic comments— Peltogyne catingae is not found in the Caatinga in Northeast Brazil, but in Amazonian capinaranas (humid scrub forests), in sandy soils, and eventually in forests. P. catingae has leaflets with an acute to acuminate apex, a dilated pulvinus, and a non-decurrent blade. Sometimes it is confused with P. campestris, a species that occur in open environments, especially in Ducke resevoir. However, P. campestris has leaflets with an obtuse or rounded apex, a non-dilated pulvinus and a decurrent blade. When Ducke (1915) described P. campestris, he segregated the taxon into two subspecies based on the presence of trichomes on the inflorescences and bracteoles: P. catingae subsp. catingae and P. catingae subsp. glabra . However, in our analyses, we did not find bracteoles with a totally glabrous surface, but rather bracteoles with a few trichomes. This variation in the trichomes may be related to the water regime and temperature of the environment (Sandquist et al. 1997), as observed in the leaflets of P. pauciflora and P. paniculata .

Etymology— catingae, a common tree in the caatingas of the Amazon.

Specimens examined — BRAZIL.Amazonas: 19 November 1936, A. It is sometimes confused with P. angustiflora . However, in addition to the difference in leaflets, P. confertiflora has bark with longitudinal grooves, stamens with filaments of equal size and triangular fruits, as well as a glabrous ovary with a few sparse trichomes at the base. In turn, P. angustiflora has smooth bark, an attenuate leaf base, stamens with filaments of different sizes, cymitiform fruits, and a pubescent ovary. The genus Peltogyne is monospermic, but fruits with two seeds were eventually observed in specimens collected in Mato Grosso do Sul. Silva (1976) designates the collection of M. Olav. 2473 (M) as the type of P. confertiflora . However, G. Gardner 2465 and J. S. Blanchet 3108 (K, MO) are indicated in the protologue of this species. According to the principle of priority, we consider Gardner’s collection as the lectotype.

Etymology—confertim, together, dense; flora, flower. The name alludes to the flowers that are arranged close together in the inflorescence.

Specimens examined — BRAZIL. In Venezuela, it occurs in the regions of the Emoni and Casiquiare rivers, and in Colombia, in Vichada, Bojonawi Reserve (Fig 4).

Taxonomic comments —The main characteristic of P. densiflora is the presence of a long branch (~ 20 cm) that raises the inflorescence out of the tree crown, exposing the flowers and fruits. This exposition possibly contributes to pollination and seed dispersal. In 1939, Amshoff considered P. densiflora as a synonym of P. venosa . However, due to the distinguishable characteristics between the two taxa, Amshoff considered P. densiflora to be a variety of P. venosa, designating it P. venosa var. densiflora . In the last taxonomic revision of the genus Peltogyne, Silva (1976) considered that the variety of P. venosa var. densiflora was perfectly distinguishable and that it could not remain just a variety. The author therefore proposed elevating the taxon to the category of subspecies, which became P. venosa subsp. densiflora . When we analyzed a larger number of specimens, we found additional distinguishable characteristics between these species. P. densiflora has a pubescent ovary, an aphyllous inflorescence branch and no buttress roots on the stem. In turn, P. venosa has a glabrous ovary, inflorescence branches not aphyllous, and tall buttress roots (about 3 m) on the stem. P. densiflora can be confused with P. barbata, but they can be distinguished by the presence of a scaly, brown bark with striate branches, falcate leaflets lacking glands in the former versus smooth, grayish bark, scaly branches and non-falcate leaflets with glands in the latter.

Etymology—dense, compact or dense; flora, flower. The name refers to the dense inflorescences.

Specimens examined — BRAZIL. Amazonas: Alto Rio Negro, Boca do rio Içana, local chamado Boa Vista (antigo Grilo), 12 November 1987, M. L. P. discolor is sometimes confused with P. pauciflora, but it can be clearly distinguished from it by its glabrous, elliptic leaflets with an emarginate apex, early deciduous stipules, and orbicular fruits, while P. pauciflora has obovate leaflets with a pilose base, persistent stipules, and oblong fruits. Silva (1976) mentioned P. discolor as occurring in the state of Rio de Janeiro and southern Bahia. However, the analysis of the specimen collected by Curran 74 (RB!, US (scanned image) showed that the material consists of only a young branch and fruit. Despite the deficient material, it is possible to see that the specimen is P. chrysopis, later described by Barneby (1994), and the defficient sample may have contributed to the misidentification by Silva (1976).

Etymology— discolor, another color. It refers to the different colors of the abaxial and adaxial sides of the leaflets.

Specimens examined — BRAZIL. In Brazil, its occurrence is restricted to Roraima, on the border with Venezuela (Fig 5).

Taxonomic comments— Peltogyne floribunda has no stipe, which is rare in the Hymenaea clade. P. parvifolia has a non-decurrent blade, a non-dilated pulvinus, and an obconic hypanthium. Adolfo Ducke (1922) recombined Hymenaea floribunda in the genus Peltogyne, using the name P. floribunda [Hayne (1830:11) Getreue Darstell. Gew. xi. t. 7. (1856) (Holotype: Illustration t.7) Benth (= P. floribunda (H.B.K) Benth)], on which occasion he recognized J.G. Kuhlmann’s collection (RB! 3860) as identical to the description of H. floribunda . However, only four years later, Pittier (1926) published the appropriate description for P. floribunda . Based on the principle of priority, the name adopted by Ducke is the correct one.

Etymology—floribundus, flowers in abundance.

Specimens examined — BRAZIL. However, we observed that in P. heterophylla, younger leaflets are relatively larger than older ones. The species was published in the last revision of the genus (Silva 1976) without a description of the floral characters, which we present here. The characteristics of the leaflets and fruits of P. heterophylla described by Silva (1976) differed from those of other species in the locality studied ( P. lecointei, P. densiflora, and P. subsessilis), supporting the indication of a new taxon. Another species decribed by Silva (1976), P. prancei, was also presented without floral characters and with a geographic distribution close to P. heterophylla . The principle III of the code of nomenclature states that “The nomenclature of a taxonomic group is based upon priority of publication”. The names P. herophylla and P. prancei are legitimate names, with the same priority and published in the same protologue. Analyzing materials collected in Rondônia (CEN! 82025), we consider that P. prancei is a synonym of P. heterophylla . This is because P. prancei is only known from one collection (G. T Prance 14500, NY 4593), has slightly damaged leaflets and fruits similar to those of P. heterophylla . Therefore, as we consider P. prancei and P. heterophyllla to be synonyms, we have decided to keep P. prancei under the synonymy of P. heterophylla . Peltogyne heterophylla can be confused with P. gracilipes due to the size of the leaflets, but according to Silva (1976), it can be easily distinguished from P. gracilipes because the latter has prominent veins on the abaxial face of the leaflets, and P. heterophylla has leaflets with an attenuate base and caudate apex while P. gracilipes has leaflets with an oblique base and acute apex.

Etymology—heterophyllus, leaves with different shapes. Younger leaves are larger on average than older ones.

Specimens examined — BRAZIL. Amazonas: 22 September 1971, G. T. Prance 14500 (MG!, INPA !); Rondônia: Careiro, rio Castanho, April 1985, L. It also occurs in dense forests in Rondônia and Mato Grosso (Fig 5). This species is restricted to the Amazon region.

Taxonomic comments —This species has a peculiar fruit: the wing does not extend up to the apex of the fruit as in the other species of Peltogyne . The wood has a violet color when exposed to the sun. Ducke (1922) pointed out that P. lecointei resembles P. maranhensis in several respects, differing by the leaflet size and floral characteristics. Later, Ducke (1949) stated that P. maranhensis occurs in the northwest of Mato Grosso, in the Amazon region. The material analyzed (R 54574) has only fruits and they showed similarities with fruits of both species P. lecointei and P. maranhesis, and this may have caused a misidentification because in our analysis, we found that the specimen analyzed by Ducke is indeed P. lecointei, based on characteristics of the fruits. P. maranhensis is restricted to the Caatinga, has a terminal, densiflorous inflorescence and the fruits have a more elongated wing due to the persistent style. P. lecointei, in turn, has a subterminal, laxiflorous inflorescence and a winged fruit without a style.

Etymology— lecointei, in honor of Paul Le Cointe, a French naturalist who collected the species in June 1917.

Specimens examined — BRAZIL. Ducke collected a specimen (R 54574) without flowers similar to P. densiflora in the northeast of Mato Grosso, in the Amazon region, which he identified as P. maranhensis, possibly because of the shape of the fruit and the persistent nectary that turned into a movable ring in mature fruits. These characteristics are common in P. lecointei individuals growing in the north of the state of Mato Grosso. However, P. maranhensis has a terminal, densiflorous inflorescence and the fruit has a more elongated wing due to the persistent style. P. lecointei has a subterminal, laxiflorous inflorescence and a winged fruit without a style. P. maranhensis appears on the Red List as an endangered species (Risk of extinction: VU D2) due to its low density.

Etymology —The specific epithet maranhensis alludes to the occurrence in the state of Maranhão.

Specimens examined — BRAZIL. It is commonly confused with P. discolor, which occurs in the Southeast of Brazil, due to the elliptic leaflets and the size of the flowers and buds, and the orbicular fruits. In P. discolor, however, the petiole is pilose, the leaflets have an oblique base, and an emarginate apex, and the legume is indehiscent.

Etymology— mattosiana, from Mattos, a tribute to the anatomist Armando de Mattos Filho.

Specimens examined — BRAZIL. It can also be found on slopes in the department of Bolívar in Colombia (Fig 1).

Taxonomic comments— Peltogyne mexicana can be confused with P. purpurea due to the subtriangular fruit. However, the former can be distinguished by the slightly rounded fruit in the carpel cleft region, the pubescent inner side of the sepals, the differently sized stamen filaments, and the glabrous ovary. P. purpurea has a subtriangular fruit with a straight line in the carpel cleft, sepals that are glabrous in the inner side, equally sized filaments, and a pubescent ovary. The wood of P. mexicana is widely used in residential areas in Mexico, which according to Sotuyo (2014) could put the species at risk of extinction. As it is a high-quality wood, there is pressure from illegal logging.

Etymology— mexicana, native to Mexico. The name refers to the first occurrence of the species in Mexico.

Specimens examined — COLOMBIA. San Jacinto, Ca 16 Km Nw of San Jacinto, Cerro Maco, J. L. Zarucchi 4017, 08 agosto 1985 (RB! Ovary oblong, pubescent, 3(–4) mm long, style with terminal insertion, 8–12 mm long. Fruit a legume, dehiscent, triangular (cymitiform), without a protuberance, compressed, 4–5× 2–3 cm, stipitate, nectary disc not persistent, pubescent, glands absent, veins present, not winged.

Phenology —Collected in flower from November to April and in fruit from February to August.

Distribution and habitat— Peltogyne paniculata is the species with the widest geographic distribution in the genus. It can be found in non-flooded (Terra Firme) areas, near floodplains and igapós. In Brazil, it occurs in the states of Acre, Amazonas, Rondônia, Mato Grosso, Pará, Roraima, and Amapá. In Colombia, it occurs in the departments of Antioquia and Santander. In Venezuela, it is common in rainforests. In Guyana, it occurs near the Mazaruni River. In Suriname, it is found at the confluence of the Zuid and Lucie rivers. Finally, in French Guiana, it is found near Cayenne (Fig 4).

Taxonomic comments— Peltogyne paniculata can be easily identified by the inflated hypanthium, which gives the bud a pyriform appearance, the long stipe that is pubescent like the ovary, the 25 cm long laxiflorous inflorescence, and the leaflets with a primary vein that is pilose along its entire length on the abaxial side, which can be seen under a magnifying glass. The fruits have a peculiar shape among the Leguminosae, which Bentham (1870) called cymitiform, alluding to the shape of a scimitar, a typical Arab sword. Bentham (1840) described P. pubescens, but with a certain similarity to P. paniculata . Ducke (1922) suggested that P. pubescens was a variety of P. paniculata, because the characteristics varied only in terms of pubescence and flower size. We consider P. pubescens to be synonymous with P. paniculata, because in our analyses, there were no clear distinctive characteristics that could separate the taxa.

Etymology— paniculata = panicle-bearing, referring the largest panicle among the species of the genus.

Specimens examined — BRAZIL. The species is restricted to the Amazon region.

Taxonomic comments— Peltogyne parvifolia has small leaflets, 6 to 7.5 cm long, and relatively lighter color than other species of the genus. These characteristics make P. parvifolia to be commonly confused with representatives of the genus Hymenaea (Fernandes 1994), which in this case can be immediately identified by the attenuated leaf base versus the oblique leaf base in Hymenaea . The color of the leaflets can make the species also be confused with P. floribunda . However, P. parvifolia has a non-decurrent blade, a non-dilated pulvinus and obconic hypanthium. In turn, P. floribunda has a decurrent blade, a dilated pulvinus, and no hypanthium. Ducke (1935) described the species P. micrantha, which Silva (1976) later synonymized as P. parvifolia . We agree with Silva (1976) because the characteristics are insufficient to distinguish the species. Silva (1976) established the variety P. parvifolia var. glabra based on the ovary that was totally glabrous in specimens from Venezuela. However, the analysis of other collections in the region and also digital images (L. Williams 14406, F) showed that the ovary can be glabrous with very short trichomes or totally glabrous. Therefore, we do not consider varieties for the species.

Etymology—parvus, small; folia, leaf.

Specimens examined — BRAZIL. Amazonas: Rio Curicuriary, rio Negro, 02 November 1932, A . The species can also occur in restinga areas in Ceará. It grows in dry areas such as rupestrian fields (Fig 2).

Taxonomic comments— Peltogyne pauciflora can be identified by the stipules that are persistent until the leaflets mature, distinguishing it from the other species in the genus, which have deciduous stipules. This species can be confused with P. discolor because the pilose petiole and leaflets with oblique base. However, P. pauciflora has obovate leaflets with a pilose abaxial surface and linear, persistent stipules, while P. discolor has elliptic, glabrous leaflets and deciduous stipules. P. pauciflora is sometimes missidentified as P. recifenses, but the latter has elliptic leaflets with attenuate base and an inflorescence usually with a greater number of flowers. P. crenulata was described by Fernandes (1994) as occurring only in restinga areas (Ceará) and with a crenate leaf margin (therefore “ crenulata ”). We consider P. crenulata to be a taxonomic synonym of P. pauciflora, since collections from Bahia and Minas Gerais in Brazil also have crenate margins. There are also records of the occurrence of P. discolor in restinga areas in the Southeast of Brazil.

Etymology— pauciflora, few-flowered. The name alludes to inflorescence with few flowers.

Specimens examined — BRAZIL. This species is sometimes confused with P. mexicana due to their overlapped distribution. However, P. mexicana has a slightly rounded fruit in the carpel cleft region, pubescent sepals in the inner side, stamens with filaments of different sizes and a glabrous ovary. P. purpurea resembles P. gracilipes due to the shape of the leaflets, but P. purpurea can be distinguished by its attenuate base of the leaflets, non-decurrent blades and the non-dilated pulvinus. In P. gracilipes, the base of the leaflet is oblique, the blade is elongated and the pulvinus is dilated. In addition, P. gracilipes is restricted to the vicinity of Maracá Island in Roraima. P. purpurea can also be confused with P. subsessilis due to the similarities in the leaflets. However, P. subsessilis has discolorous leaflets and inflated-compressed fruits while P. purpurea has concolorous leaflets and compressed subtriangular fruits.

Etimology—purpureus = purple, a color between red and blue, referring to the color of the wood.

Specimens examined — PANAMA. Leaflets elliptic to oblong, lanceolate when young, not falcate, 9–11 × 3.5–5.5 cm, base attenuate (slightly rounded), apex acute, glabrous, wax absent on both surfaces, concolorous, petiole (7–) 10–22 mm long, petiolule 3–5 mm long, blade decurrent, pulvinus dilated, primary vein conspicuous (blackish) abaxially, secondary veins conspicuous on both sides, glands absent. Inflorescence a panicle, terminal, densiflorous, rachis velutinous, 6–10 cm long, inserted in a non-aphyllous branch. Pedicel 3 mm, bracteoles caducous, hypanthium present, 3 × 4 mm, obconic. Bud 6–8 × 10–15 mm, sepals subtriangular, outer side pubescent, inner side pubescent, margin glabrous, glands present, petals oblanceolate, unguiculate, glabrous, glands present. Stamens of different sizes, antesepalous filaments 20(–22) mm long, antepetalous filaments 14(–16) mm long. Stipe glabrous, 1–2 mm long. Ovary orbicular, glabrous, 3 – 4 mm long, style with terminal insertion, 13–20 mm long. Fruit a legume, indehiscent, orbicular, without a protuberance, compressed, 2.2 × 2.7 cm, stipitate, nectary disc not persistent, glabrous, glands present, veins present, winged.

Phenology —Collected in flower between February and July and in fruit between June and July.

Distribution and habitat— Peltogyne venosa occurs in non-flooded (Terra Firme) areas in the state of Amapá, northern Pará and French Guiana (Fig 5). This species is restricted to the Amazon region.

Taxonomic comments— Peltogyne venosa has a glabrous ovary, a non-aphyllous inflorescence branch and tall buttress roots on the stem (3 m). This species is often confused with P. densiflora, but the latter has a pubescent ovary, aphyllous inflorescence branch and no buttress roots on the stem.

Etimology—venosus, which has many veins, referring the veins in the fruit.

Specimens examined — BRAZIL. In addition, geographic distribution data and habitat are relevant for recognizing several species. Peltogyne shows a high richness in the humid forests of South America. Fourteen species are found in the Amazon region, distributed in open fields, flooded environments, and dense forests, configuring itself as the center of wealth of the genus. The species can also occur in the Atlantic Forest, Cerrado, and Caatinga. This study can support measures for the conservation of the Peltogyne species in the Amazon Forest.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03FE87A0AD33EB0CE3EEFE36FDCEFDA8	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
