Royal Soc. Queensland 29: 79.

Type species: Sesia igniflua Lucas 1894, by monotypy.

This genus was synonymized with Pennisetia by Duckworth & Eichlin (1974) and with Oligophlebia by Kallies (2001). However, Diapyra differs from both genera in a number of significant characters and was considered valid by Arita & Gorbunov (2001) and Pühringer & Kallies (2004). Diapyra is similar to a number of genera but differs externally and by the genitalia. Antenna of normal length, male antennae long pectinate, female antennae simple; abdomen smooth, without scale tufts, somewhat flattened dorso-ventrally; hind tibia without any scale tufts; frons and vertex smooth, covered with very large scales; forewing with R 4 and R 5 long stalked, Cu2 lost; hindwing with cross vein angled. Valva of the male genitalia lacks the sensory field. Female genitalia with a large screw-shaped signum, ductus bursae simple; antrum straight.

Key to species of Diapyra

1 Forewing with ETA in cell between R5 to M3....................................... The specific name “ changchini ” is dedicated to our friend Mr. Chang-Chin Chen.

Diagnosis. Diapyra changchini sp. nov. cannot be confused with any other species in Taiwan. The wing pattern of this species is distinct from all other known species of the genus Diapyra . D. changchini is similar to D. igniflua in appearance, but with the forewing blackish brown and a prominent fire-coloured patch only present basally. By contrast, forewings of D. igniflua are almost entirely fire-coloured.

Description. Male (Figs 1−2): Antennal length 6.2 mm; forewing length 7.6 mm; body length 8.1 mm. Head: antenna black, flattened laterally; labial palps white ventrally, dirty grey dorsally, apical segment tiny; frons black; proboscis well developed. Thorax black with grey metallic sheen. Legs: fore coxa white with a few black scales, mid and hind coxae white; tarsomers of fore leg white, distally black; mid and hind coxae creme white; mid femur unevenly white; mid and hind tibiae with two tufts of spiky scales at base and in the middle; hind femur white at ventral edge, proximal part of hind tibia white; base of first tarsomer of hind tarsus white; spurs black, relatively short and naked, white at the tip. Forewings: blackish brown, prominent fire-coloured patch present basally. Hindwing: light blackish brown with transparent areas at the base; cilia dark brown; vein M2 arises in the centre of the straight crossvein. Abdomen: dorsal black, tergite 1 with red-brown patch; tergite 5 with small white patch of both sides margin; black ventrally with blue metallic sheen. Female (Figs 3−4). Antennal length 4.1 mm; forewing length 8.2 mm; body length 7.1 mm. Antenna with a white spot at near distally. Other characteristics identical to those of males.

Male genitalia (Gen. Prep. JYL-1075, NCYU, Figs 7−9): Uncus bilobed, with a few long individual setae; valva simple, relatively narrow, tapering towards the distal end, covered with simple setae; saccus short and rounded; juxta forming a complex dumbbell shape; phallus simple, very long, almost twice as long as valva + cornutus.

Female genitalia (Gen. Prep. JYL-1074, NCYU, Fig 10): Papillae anales narrow and short, apophysis posteriores longer than apophysis anteriores; antrum tubular, strongly sclerotized; ductus bursae simple; corpus bursae membranous, ovoid, twisted about 540°, with an elongated, strongly sclerotized and screw-shaped signum.

Bionomics. The host plant is unknown. All specimens were collected between August and September. The adults have been observed visiting flowers of Fagaceae during the day time at about 1400 m in elevation (Figs 12−13).

Distribution. Currently known only to be from Taiwan.

Molecular data. The barcode of Diapyra changchini sp. nov. Wing pattern of Diapyra meihuashana sp. nov. is distinct from all other known species of the genus Diapyra . ETA area is present in cells between R5 to M 3 in D. meihuashana sp. nov., whereas it is absent in D. igniflua and D. changchini sp. nov.

Description. Female (Figs 5−6): Antennal length 2.8−3.5 mm (n=4); forewing length 4.9−6.2 mm (n=4); body length 5.4−7.1 mm (n=4). Head: antenna black; labial grey, white at ventral side; vertex black, long and smooth, covering half of the frons, white ventrally. Thorax: black with blue sheen; metathorax black, dorso-laterally with some grey hair-like scales. Legs: coxa white; fore femur black with distally white; fore tibia black; tarsomers of fore leg white, distally black; mid and hind femur dorsal black ventral white; mid and hind tibiae with two tufts of spiky scales at base and in the middle; hind femur white at ventral edge, proximal part of hind tibia white; base of first tarsomer of hind tarsus white; spurs black, relatively short and naked, white at the tip. Abdomen: dorsal black with blue sheen; tergites 2 and 3 with a narrow white anterior margin; tergite 5 with white posterior margin; tergite 8 with a white spot at middle; sternite 2, 4, 5 and 6 white; abdominal tuft black, lateral margins with black scales. Forewings: dark brown to black, with admixture of white scales; exterior transparent area small and divided into three cells, between common stem of R5 to M3; cilia dark brown. Hindwing: transparent; veins and outer margin dark brown to black; cilia dark brown, grey anally; vein M2 arises in the lower 1/3 of the cross vein.

Female genitalia (Gen. Prep. JYL-1077, NCYU, Fig 11): Papillae anales narrow and short, apophysis posteriores longer than apophysis anteriores; antrum tubular, strongly sclerotized; ductus bursae simple; corpus bursae membranous, ribbon, twisted about 720°, with a long, well-sclerotized and screw-shaped signum.

Biology. The larva bores into the stem of Actinidia lanceolata ( Actinidiaceae) about 1.3−2.1 cm in diameter and feeds on callus tissue around the hole, which is covered with silk, debris, and frass (Fig 14). The pupae scrubbed and rotated its abdomen to drill out the cocoon to eclosion, leaving a hole of exuviae on the stem of the hostplant (Figs 15–16).

Distribution. Currently, the new species is only known to be from China (Fujian Prov.). However, its hostplant, A. lanceolata, is widely distributed in subtropical Asia, so the moth may be found elsewhere.

Molecular data. The barcode of Diapyra meihuashana sp. nov. (630 bp fragment of COI; accession number: PX226371, PX226372) was deposited in GenBank.

Note. Although only female specimens of this taxon were available, the genitalic characters are fully conformed to the diagnostic features of Diapyra redescribed by Kallies (2020) for the female genitalia: female genitalia with segments 8 and 9 relatively long, corpus bursae small, with a long and well-sclerotized fold, ductus bursae simple; antrum straight; papillae anales relatively large,” so we decided that it is appropriate to place this taxon in the genus Diapyra .

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03F187ED4F56825777C3B7EEFF27063F	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
