Male of T. (V.) pseudocoxitalis sp. nov. is similar to T. (V.) coxitalis in having similar body coloration, but the new species can be differentiated by sternite 9 bearing a pair of horn-like extensions covered with long setae and posterolateral edge of tergite 9 with two rounded protrusions. In T. (V.) coxitalis, sternite 9 has pencils of reddish bristles and no extensions, while tergite 9 posterolaterally with single protrusion. Females of both species are similar in having an elongated tergite 10, where it is 1.6X the length of the cercus in the new species and 2.5X longer than the cercus in T. (V.) coxitalis .

Description. Male. Body length 11.6–14.6 mm, wing length 16.9–19.0 mm (n = 4). General body coloration yellow, thorax brown, tip of abdomen blackish brown (Fig. 1A).

Head. Yellow, with narrow brown vitta (Fig. 1B). Rostrum yellowish brown, nasus distinct. Palpus yellow, terminal segment darkened. Antenna 13-segmented, if bent backward reaching beyond the base of wing (Fig. 1A). Scape and pedicel yellow, flagellar segments yellow to brownish yellow, bicolored, with base brown, slightly enlarged. Verticils longer than corresponding flagellomeres.

Thorax. Yellow to brownish yellow, thinly dusted with grey (Fig. 1A, B). Pronotum yellow with large brown median spot. Prescutum and presutural scutum yellow, with four brown stripes. Central stripe separated by light yellow ground. Postsutural scutum yellowish, scutal lobes each with two brown spots. Scutellum yellowish brown with brown line. Mediotergite yellowish with darker median line. Pleura brownish yellow. Legs with coxae yellow, thinly dusted with grey. Trochanters yellow. Femora brownish yellow, darkened at tips. Tibiae brownish yellow. Tarsal segments brown. Wing tinged with brown, costal and subcostal cells yellow (Fig. 1A). Crossvein m-cu joining cell dm at fork of M 3+4, cell m 1 about 3.7 as long as its petiole. Halter brown, with knob dark brown.

Abdomen. Abdominal segments 1–5 yellow, trivittate. Segments 6 and 7 brown, remaining segments blackish brown including enlarged hypopygium (Fig. 2).

Hypopygium (Figs 2–5). Tergite 9 fused with sternite 9 basally (Figs 2C, 3A). Tergite 9 with dorsal and ventral parts (Figs 3B, 4A, B); dorsal part medially divided by membrane, posterior edge shallow curve with two small, rounded protrusions at either end (Fig. 4B); ventral part consisting of two flat triangular lobes fused at base, indistinctly serrated on surface, separated by broad U-shaped notch. Proctiger membranous, anal plate forming oval basal and rounded distal lobes (Fig. 4A). Gonocoxite large and elongated distally, forming arch-like structure in dorsal view partially separated from sternite 9 by suture (Fig. 3B); basal part broad, distal part produced into elongated arm with tip nearly funnel shaped (Figs 3A, 4C). Outer gonostylus small and narrow (Fig. 4D). Inner gonostylus terminating into black, slightly curved beak (Fig. 4E); middorsal margin with nearly straight, black lobe. Sternite 9 near caudal end of either side of midline forming short, horn-like extensions covered with tufted yellow setae (Figs 3A, 4F); posterior part of sternite 9 with cross-shaped yellow suture and two distal triangular sclerites (Fig. 4F). Adminiculum nearly triangular in ventral view, medially protruded into distinct sclerite (Fig. 4G); tip curved in ventral projection (Fig. 4H). Appendage of sternite 9 with ventral lobe darkened, narrow, covered with setae (Fig. 4I); dorsal lobe J-shaped, basal two thirds narrow, distal third expands abruptly, subtriangular in shape (Fig. 4I, K). Inner margin covered with setae, outer margin obtuse (Fig. 4J) or bulbous depending on the exposition angle (Fig. 4K). Sperm pump with central vesicle swollen (Fig. 5A). Ejaculatory apodeme flattened, without median incision (Fig. 5B). Posterior immovable apodeme narrowed, anterior immovable apodeme flattened and rounded. Aedeagus about 2.7X as long as sperm pump (Fig. 5A).

Female (Fig. 1C). Body length 18.5 mm, wing length 14.0 mm (n = 2). General body coloration brown.

Ovipositor (Fig. 6). Hypogynial valve extending slightly before base of cercus, blade-shaped (Fig. 6A–C). Sternite 8 posterolaterally flattened into rounded lobe (Fig. 6B), taking shape of triangle when pressed by coverglass (Fig. 6C). Median incision between hypogynial valves basally provided with setae. Sternite 9 with posterior part wedge-shaped, medially with small incision (Fig. 6D); the surface covered with short filaments, anterior parts membranous. Furca elongated, membranous (Fig. 6E). Spermatheca broadened at base, nearly pear-shaped (Fig. 6F).

Etymology. The name of the new species refers to its external similarity to T. (V.) coxitalis .

Type locality. China, Chongqing.

Remarks. A total of nine species is recognized in the coxitalis group (Table 1). Three species, T. (V.) bicalcarata, T. (V.) maoershanensis and T. (V.) proboscelongata have the apical part of the gonocoxite distinctly narrowing (Men et al. 2017: figs 7, 31; Yang & Yang 1991, fig. 7), while the remaining species have a broadened, funnellike apex including T. (V.) pseudocoxitalis (Fig. 4C). The newly described species is closely related to T. (V.) sternotuberculata, T. (V.) leigongshanensis and T. (V.) bispathifera in having distinct extensions on sternite 9 and a narrow lobe on the inner gonostylus. Tipula (V.) coxitalis has sternite 9 without extensions (Starkevich & Young 2023, fig. 23A), while T. (V.) lushuiensis has a broad lobe on the inner gonostylus (Men et al. 2021, fig. 9).

Tipula (V.) sternotuberculata can be separated by the inner gonostylus bearing a curved, horn-shaped lobe (Starkevich & Young 2023, fig. 28C), whereas it is straight in T. (V.) pseudocoxitalis sp. nov., and an additional rounded lobe on the dorsal margin, which is absent in the newly described species. Tipula (V.) leigongshanensis has an incision at the apex of the gonocoxite (Men et al. 2017, fig. 20), which is absent in T. (V.) pseudocoxitalis sp. nov. The new species can be separated from T. (V.) bispathifera by the inner gonostylus possessing a straight lobe and tergite 9 having large ventral lobes. In T. (V.) bispathifera, the inner gonostylus has a curved lobe and distinctly smaller ventral lobes (Savchenko 1960, fig. 2).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03F4075CFF93893915DF7371FAE1F8B8	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
