Comparative and comprehensive descriptions are provided in Table 1 and shown in Figs. 1–11.

Description: Dwarf shrub, pulvinate to erect, robust, compact, 15–55 cm tall, with branches alternate and rigid, with spiny apex, clearly striate, sericeous; old branches remain below. Leaves 1-foliate, sessile, stipulate, adpressed sericeous and mostly sparsely hairy above, caducous; usually one leaf on the nodes of sterile shoots, narrowly oblanceolate to obelliptic, slightly inrolled, acute to slightly obtuse at apex, (2–)3–6 × 0.5–1.5 mm; older and juvenile branches with prominent pulvini. Inflorescence of (1‒)2–18 flowers per branch, young branches with racemose inflorescences of 4 cm or more. Flowers 1–3 in the axils of bracts. Bracts dissimilar to leaves, fasciculate and 3–6 bracts on the nodes of fertile shoots, obovate, truncate to rounded at apex, (2–)3–5(–6) x (1–) 2–3 mm, with prominent pulvini, with ±both surfaces sparsely hairy, shorter or subequal to the pedicel. Bracteoles 2, linear-subulate, apiculate, 0.5–1 mm, shorter than the pedicel, inserted at the lower half of the pedicel. Pedicel (3–) 4–7 mm long, short adpressed sericeous. Calyx with sericeous hairs, 3.5–5 mm, obconical-campanulate, bilabiate, with the tube shorter than the lips; lower lip trifid, 2.5–3 mm, teeth narrowly lanceolate and c. 1.5 mm long; upper lip shorter than the lower lip, bipartite, 2–2.5 mm long, triangular. Corolla yellow; standard entire or slightly emarginate at the apex, 9–11 × 6–7 mm, broadly elliptic, sericeous on the back; wings 9.5–10 mm, with a tuft of hairs on basal gibbosity; keel 9.5–10 mm, sericeous on outer faces. Wings and keel somewhat shorter than the standard. Staminal tube 3.5–4 mm long, anthers yellow. Pistil 11 mm, stigma papillose, oblique. Pod densely adpressed sericeous, narrowly oblong, apiculate, flattened, 13–24 x 4–5 mm, 2–5 seeded. Seeds ovoid, flattened, biconvex, 2.5–3 × 2–2.5 mm, brownish, shiny.

Paratypes:— TURKEY. C4 Karaman: Ermenek, above Görmeli village, 19 June 2023, 36⁰31’52’’N, 32⁰59’22’’E, 1154 m a.s.l., open Pinus brutia forest and among bushes, A.Duran 10889 (HUB) . Karaman: Ermenek, entering Görmeli village, 29 July 2023, 36⁰32’32’’N, 32⁰58’03’’E, 1050 m a.s.l., among bushes, A.Duran 10922 (ANK) .

Etymology: —The specific epithet refers to the type locality of the new species, the Ermenek district. The Turkish name of the new species is suggested here as “ermenek borcağı” (Menemen et al. 2016).

Phenology: —Flowering in May–June, and fruiting in June–July.

Distribution: — Genista ermenekensis is a narrow endemic to Southern Anatolia (Karaman province), Turkey. This species is located in the East Mediterranean phytogeographical regions (Fig. 12).

Habitat and ecology: —Palaeopalynological data show that Anatolia had a dense vegetation cover in the last interglacial period (Litt et al. 2014, Pickarski et al. 2015). The topography of Turkey has changed many times since then, which resulted in different microclimates in the tectonic valleys (Gemici 1993). The Taurus Mountains are a botanically interesting area located in the Mediterranean phytogeographical region and very rich in local endemic plants (Duran et al. 2005). Situated within the Göksu River Valley, Görmeli village (Ermenek district) and its surrounding areas are characterized by a Mediterranean climate. The presence of a warm Mediterranean microclimate in the region supports widespread olive cultivation. In recent years, several new species from different families have been described from this area and its surroundings, including Aegokeras gazipashensis A.Duran & Lyskov (Duran et al. 2023), Ferula ermenekense Sağıroğlu & H.Duman (Sağıroğlu & Duman 2023), Gladiolus izzet-baysalii Eker & Sağıroğlu (Eker & Sağıroğlu 2021), Campanula myrtifolia var. caerulea Yıldırım, Deniz & Altıoğlu (Özdöl et al. 2022), Klasea serratuloides (DC.) Greuter & Wagenitz subsp. karamanica B.Doğan & A.Duran (Doğan et al. 2014) . Görmeli (Ermenek) is one of the villages located in the Göksu River valley where Genista ermenekensis naturally occurs. The altitude of the Göksu River valley varies between 470–1850 m a.s.l. Genista ermenekensis grows in open Pinus brutia forest and among sloping shrubland, and share its habitat with Pinus brutia Ten., Cotinus coggygria Scop., Pyrus elaeagnifolia Pall., Quercus coccifera L., Q. cerris L., Colutea cilicica Boiss. & Balansa, Pistacia terebinthus L., Styrax officinalis L., Ferula ermenekense Sağıroğlu & H.Duman, Bunium hermonis (Post) Kljuykov, Astragalus sp., Sideritis sp. (Fig. 1).

IUCN red list category: — Genista ermenekensis is distributed in the western and central Taurus Mountains, within the transitional zone in the Ermenek district. The species is naturally distributed in the surroundings of Görmeli village and exhibits a restricted and localized occurrence. It is known only from the vicinity of a single village, and this area is less than 25 km ² in extent. The habitat of this species is subject to severe anthropogenic pressures, including planned deforestation, wildfires, agricultural expansion, construction of new roads, and overgrazing. These factors collectively contribute to a continuous decline in the number of individuals (criterion A). The estimated number of mature individuals in the population is approximately 710 (criterion C1). Therefore, according to the IUCN Red List Criteria (IUCN, 2024), the species should provisionally be classified as Critically Endangered [(CR), B1ab (iii, v)+2ab(ii, iv)]. However, as with other newly described taxa having an almost punctiform or very limited distribution and provisionally assessed as CR, it will be necessary to collect further data on distribution, population size, and threats in order to correctly assess the IUCN category and to define appropriate strategies for the long-term conservation of the new species.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03F487DBE1213736FF5AFDEDFEACFE91	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
