Singh 2025

Caragana sericophylla Subhasmit Bhattacharyya, Sameer Patil, Sushil K. Singh nom. nov.

Replaced basionym:— Caragana spinosissima Blatter (1930: 205) . nom. illeg. non C. spinosissima Bentham (1835: 198) .

Type:— PAKISTAN. North Waziristan, Boya, open stony ground along foot of hills, 4,000 ft., 27 March 1927, E. Blatter 910 (holotype BLAT!); paratypes: E. Blatter 907 (BLAT!), E. Blatter 913 (BLAT!) .

Distribution:— Pakistan, endemic.

Etymology:—The specific epithet ‘ sericophylla ’ is derived from two Greek words, ‘ serikos ’ means silky hairy and ‘ phylla ’ means leaves; denoting one of the prominent characters of the species viz. sericeous leaves.

Note:—A similar name, Caragana sericea Pampanini (1907: 593) exists within the genus and is now synonymized with Caragana stipitata Komarov (1909: 343) . While both epithets share a Greek origin and refer to silky-haired plants, C. sericophylla differs in having coriaceous (hard) stipules/spines, compared to the membranaceous (soft) stipules/spines of C. sericea . Additionally, the two species are geographically isolated, precluding any taxonomic confusion.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03E94838877DC03DFF2203BD50B54000	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
