Dr. S. S. Jadav, Registration number 3830/H14, Zoological Survey of India, Kolkata .

Etymology. The species is named after the number of sensory papillae (13, in Latin) in the apical article of labial palp.

Diagnosis. Apical article of labial palps with high number of sensory papillae (13); Urotergite I with 1+1, II-VI with 3+3 and VII-VIII with 2+2 bristle combs. Urosternite I and II without setae, III-VIII with 1+1 lateral bristle combs. Urotergal combs with 5−12 macrosetae and urosternal combs with 13−15 macrosetae each. Urotergite X trapezoidal. Ovipositor with 48−50 divisions.

Description. Body (Fig. 1) length of female up to 8.7 mm; of male up to 9.5 mm. Base colour of the body (in spirit) both dorsally and ventrally whitish yellow, with a covering of brown scales dorsally. Shape of the body elongate, more or less parallel sided, dorso-ventrally compressed anteriorly, sub-cylindrical posteriorly; thorax wider than abdomen. Antennae and caudal appendages with alternating dark and light bands of brown pigmentation.

Head (Fig. 2) semi-circular in outline anteriorly; frons bearing two very conspicuous tufts of stout cephalic setae, pectinate and radially arranged. There are numerous bifid and pectinate macrosetae present in both clypeus and labrum; those of the clypeus are grouped in two tufts composed of 60−62 each, those of the labrum are grouped in two tufts composed of 25−27 each. Eyes black, located well behind antennae. Head wider (1.6 mm) than long (0.8 mm). Antennae in male up to 9.6 mm, as long as the body length when directed backwards.

Apical article of labial palp (Fig. 3) sub-globular in shape, about 2.7 times wider at the apex than at the base and 1.2 times wider than long; it bears 13 oval sensory papillae arranged in a single row. Maxillary palp (Fig. 4) five segmented; penultimate segment (0.5 mm) as long as the terminal segment.

Medial part of the pronotal collar composed of 3–4 rows of macrosetae and both lateral parts contain a single row of smooth macrosetae. Lateral margins of pronotum (Fig. 5) with 10+10 combs composed of 3–5 macrosetae each. Two trichobothrial areas on each side, associated to the inner side of both the last lateral comb (N) and N–4 comb. Mesonotum (Fig. 6) lateral margins with 13+13 combs each consisting of 2−5 macrosetae, including two trichobothrial areas in the inner side of the comb N (last lateral) and the outer side of comb N-2 (antepenultimate). Metanotum (Fig. 7) lateral margins with 11+11 combs composed of 2–4 macrosetae including one trichobothrial area situated in the inner side of the last lateral comb. Hind borders of pro, meso and metanotum with 1+1 bristle combs composed of 7 macrosetae each.

Prosternum (Fig. 8) 1.5 mm in length, its length/width ratio about 1.1, subtriangular, posteriorly, faintly indented and has 3+4 bristle combs each composed of 2–5 macrosetae. Mesosternum (Fig. 9) 1.6 mm in length, its length/width ratio about 0.9, apically straight and 2+2 subapical bristle combs each composed of 5 macrosetae. Metasternum (Fig. 10) 1.5 mm in length, its length/width ratio about 0.8; posterior margin broadly rounded but apical part faintly straight with 1+1 bristle combs each composed of 9–10 macrosetae.

Legs (Fig. 11) stout; femora moderate in length, one strong seta each on their outer and inner margin distally near the junction of tibiae; tibiae and tarsi moderately elongate; pretarsi with slightly curved claws. Coxae and femora with scales. Length/width ratio of protibiae about 2.4 times longer than wide; protibiae have two macrosetae inserted in their dorsal margin and four macrosetae in their ventral margin. Mesotibiae 2.6 times longer than wide. Mesotibiae are 1.2 times longer than the protibiae. Metatibiae about 3.1 times longer than wide, with two dorsal and four ventral macrosetae. Metatibiae are 1.7 times longer than the protibiae and 1.4 times longer than the mesotibiae.

Urotergite I with 1+1 bristle-combs, each composed of 6 macrosetae. Urotergites II−VI with 3+3 bristle-combs, each composed of 5−12 macrosetae, and urotergite VII and VIII with 2+2 bristle-combs, each composed of 7−11 macrosetae. Urotergite IX without bristle combs. Urotergite X (Fig. 12) trapezoidal, shorter than wide at its base (length 0.57 mm, base width 1.2 mm, apical width 0.65 mm), ratio length/width about 0.4, posterior margin almost straight. It has 1+1 bristle-combs of 5–7 macrosetae each.

Urosternites I and II without setae, III−VIII with 1+1 lateral bristle-combs, each composed of 13−15 macrosetae.

Both sexes with two pairs of styli, inserted on segments VIII and IX. Posterior margin of the coxite VIII round. Inner process of the coxite IX long, triangular and pointed at tip, in the female about 1.7 times longer than wide at its base and 2.2 times longer than the outer process. Ovipositor (Fig. 13) very long, almost half of the abdomen length with 48−50 divisions, surpassing the apex of the inner process of the coxite IX by 2.1 times the length of this process. The apical parts of gonapophyses are not sclerotized, both the anterior and posterior one carry fine bristles; the anterior one with two long setae. Female caudal filament 8.1 mm long, length of cerci 7.2 mm.

Distribution and habitat. Ctenolepisma (Ctenolepisma) tredecimum sp. nov. was generally found under the bark of tree at Kokamthan, Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra and in the forest near Laxmipur, Nirmal district, Telangana. The protection of these forest areas will help to conserve of this rare Zygentoma species.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03E687A0FFABFF8CFF137B8DFB5DFC5F	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
