Bhandari, S. Sonam, R. Negi, P. Singh, R. K. Singh et P. K. Dadheech 2025

Elainella ringii M. Bhandari, S. Sonam, R. Negi, P. Singh, R. K. Singh et P. K. Dadheech sp. nov. (Figs. 1C–F).

Description: Thallus thin, mat like, dark brown, initially submerged, subsequently floating during in vitro growth phase. Filaments long, straight or slightly wavy, parallelly arranged or solitary or densely entangled, sparsely pseudobranched. Sheath thin, colourless, agglutinated, 0.7±0.2 μm wide, non-lamellated, open at ends. Trichomes 2.25–2.91 μm wide, constricted at cross walls, attenuated, and slightly curved or round at the end. Cells longer than wide, 3.25 –5.08 μm long or isodiametric or elongated. Gas vesicles are present at the early log phase, glycogen granules are also present in cells, and their number increases from the log to the stationary phase. Apical cells usually rounded to obtuseconical without calyptra or thickened cell walls. Reproduction by trichomes disintegration into long or short immotile hormogonia with necridic cells.

Etymology: The specific epithet ringii is named after the type locality Ringi hot spring, Tapovan, Uttarakhand.

Type locality: The sampling was performed in April 2016 from Ringi hot spring, Tapovan, Uttarakhand, India (30° 29′ 19.0″ N, 79° 39′ 26.1″ E), at an elevation of 2944 m above sea level (a.s.l.).

Ecology of type locality: Mat was collected from the bottom surface of the thermal hot spring. The weather during sample collection was sunny with low humidity and a temperature gradient of 25–45°C in the hot spring. The pH of the water body was 7.5–8.6 and the light intensity was 268.8 µmol m-2 s-1 at the time of sampling.

Holotype: The actively growing culture of Elainella ringii HNBGU 005 has been preserved in CCUBGA Germplasm, ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), Delhi, India, under the accession number CCC 825. Dry specimen of the strain HNBGU 005 deposited in Garhwal University herbarium, Srinagar, Uttarakhand, INDIA with accession number 20832.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03D987C6CB3E8709FF11FE51FE394CF2	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
