Apheledessa absens sp. nov.

Etymology. The generic name refers to the anterior portion of the metasternal process lacking the typical bifurcation observed in Edessinae (Gk. aphelēs = smooth, even). Gender: feminine.

Definition. Small-sized species. Dorsal surface green, with the corium variegated yellow and brown; punctation concolorous except for the brown punctures on the corium (Fig. 5A, C). Pronotum with well-developed, subrectangular, dorsoventrally flattened humeral angles, slightly bent anterodorsally; apex of humeral angles with a black spot slightly projected beyond the margin (Fig. 5A, C). Abdominal segments with black, spinose posterolateral angles; those of segment VII strongly produced and curved dorsolaterally, with the inner margin black (Fig. 5A, C). Ventral surface greenish yellow to cream, with slightly darker transverse bands (probably green in live specimens) (Fig. 5B, D). Humeral angles with punctuation restricted to the ventral half and slightly excavated dorsally on the surface. Metasternal process raised anteriorly; anterior portion without bifurcate arms and medially hollowed, accommodating only the apex of rostral segment IV (Figs. 1A–B; 2A–B). Male genitalia. Pygophore. Superior processes of the genital cup brown, transversely oriented, bifurcate; each branch conical, the outer branch larger than the inner one (Fig. 3C, E). Parameres concolorous; base cylindrical, short and directed posteriorly; distal portion composed of a small spatulate process directed laterally and a large sinuous process, distally swollen and directed dorsally (Fig. 3C–E). Proctiger slightly laterally compressed (Fig. 3C–E). Female genitalia. Valvifers VIII laterally excavated (Fig. 4A–B). Laterotergites VIII narrow, distal margin forming a robust, curved laterally and spiniform projection (Fig. 4A–B). Laterotergites IX laterally curved (Fig. 4A–B).

Description. Head. Mandibular plates concave and deeply furrowed (Fig. 5A, C). Bucculae short and rounded (Fig. 5B, D). Antennae yellow.

Thorax. Pronotum with concolorous, coarse, uniformly distributed punctation. Anterolateral angles bearing a concolorous tooth. Anterolateral margins sulcate anteriorly, sulcus extending ventrally. Cicatrices delimited by callous areas and punctation, texture distinct from surrounding surface. Scutellum with acuminate apex, slightly medially excavated. Corium medially suffused with diffuse reddish coloration; punctures irregularly distributed and surrounded by dark brown spots (Fig. 5A, C). Membrane of hemelytra hyaline (Fig. 5A, C). Ventral surface of pronotum with coarse brown punctation not reaching the distal portion of the posterolateral angles (Fig. 5B, D). Meso and metepisternum with small, shallow, brown punctation (Fig. 5B, D). Evaporatorium concolorous, dull, and rugulose (Fig. 5B, D). Peritreme ruga-like, broad, reaching approximately two-thirds of the distance between the ostiole of the metathoracic scent gland and the lateral margin of the body (Fig. 5B, D). Legs yellow (Fig. 5B, D).

Abdomen. Dorsal surface brown with small, shallow, concolorous punctation.Connexivum yellowish green, with small, shallow, concolorous punctation uniformly distributed; median area with two shallow concavities separated by a swollen area (Fig. 5A, C); lateral spines black. Ventral surface with narrow dark stripes along pseudosutures and intersegmental areas, and sparse, small, concolorous punctation (Fig. 5B, D). Segment VII with inner margin black and inner margin slightly concave medially. Spiracles elliptical. Trichobothria aligned with spiracles.

Female genitalia. Valvifers VIII with small, shallow, brown punctation concentrated near the sutural margin (Fig. 4A–B). Laterotergites VIII with distal portion spinose, mostly black dorsally, and strongly produced posteriorly (Fig. 4A–B). Valvifers IX trapezoidal (Fig. 4A–B). Laterotergites IX swollen, laterally and basally compressed, surpassing mediotergite VIII (Fig. 4A–B).

Distribution (Fig. 6). BRAZIL: Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina.

Diagnosis. The new genus shares with Olbia caprina Stål, 1862 and species of Doesburgedessa the presence of an anterior cavity in the metasternal process, rather than the diagnostic bifurcation typical of Edessinae . This cavity, which accommodates only the apex of the rostrum, appears to result from the development of the ventral portion of the metasternal process, which “engulfs” the bifurcate arms and is supported by a pair of lobes. In Apheledessa gen. nov., the supporting lobes represent the anterior most extension of the metasternal process, whereas in Olbia and Doesburgedessa the projection clearly exceeds the supporting lobes. Although a phylogenetic analysis is lacking, we hypothesize that the absence of bifurcation evolved independently in these lineages. Supporting this hypothesis, Olbia elegans Herrich-Schäffer, 1837 the only other species of Olbia, possesses a bifurcated metasternal process, reinforcing the independent origin of this condition in O. caprina .

Despite similarities in the metasternal process among Apheledessa gen. nov., Olbia, and Doesburgedessa, these genera are readily distinguished by external morphology. The humeral angles are distally compressed and laterally directed in Apheledessa gen. nov., distally rounded and posteriorly curved in Olbia, and distally acute and laterally directed in Doesburgedessa . The coria in Apheledessa gen. nov. are variegated (yellow and brown) with punctation arranged in patches; in Olbia, they are chestnut brown with evenly distributed punctation; and in Doesburgedessa, brownish green with evenly distributed punctation. Dorsal punctation in Apheledessa gen. nov. is coarser than in Olbia and Doesburgedessa . In addition, the morphology of the male genitalia is diagnostic for each genus.

Another group resembling Apheledessa gen. nov. includes Edessa laticornis Stål, 1872, E. leucogramma Perty, 1833, and E. tribuaria Distant, 1890 . These taxa share a flattened, subquadrate apex of the humeral angles and coarse dorsal punctation; however, these are the only characters uniting them. Apheledessa gen. nov. differs from these species by its smaller body size, coria with brown punctation contrasting with the concolorous punctation of the pronotum and scutellum, absence of ventral punctation on the apex of the humeral angles, and a robust, laterally curved projection of abdominal segment VII, among other characters.

Remarks. Both species of Apheledessa gen. nov. are rarely collected and are known from the Atlantic Forest biome, in mountainous areas of the states of Rio de Janeiro and Santa Catarina. These regions are under strong anthropogenic pressure due to extensive habitat fragmentation.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03DBA847FFDEDB3CFF03FB65FC868357	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
