Economidichthys mornosensis is distinguished from E. pygmaeus by the first dorsal fin in male possessing a large black blotch on the membrane between ray 5 and 6 and behind ray 6 (vs. absent or very poorly developed), the perianal organ not flanking the urogenital papilla (vs. flanking anterior part, Fig. 6); its length 18–33 % of the distance between genital papilla and pelvic-disc origin (vs. 37–45 % in E. pygmaeus), and the back scaleless along the base of posteriormost rays of the second dorsal fin (vs. scaleless until about middle of second dorsal fin). It is distinguished from E. trichonis by lacking distinct black bars on the flank in the nuptial male (vs. present), and the flank covered by several rows of overlapping scales (vs. one row of non-overlapping scales).

Description. Morphometric data in Table 2. Small goby with moderately elongate body, compressed behind vertical of anus. Abdomen with a reticular perianal organ not flanking urogenital papilla, reaching 18–33 % (n=10) of distance between base of genital papilla and pelvic-disc origin. Perianal organ about the same length in males and females. Anterior nostril, a very short tube without tentacle, posterior nostril pore-like. Flank and caudal peduncle covered by several rows of overlapping ctenoid scales; head, back until end of second dorsal fin, chest and abdomen scaleless, 39+2–48+2 scales on the lateral series, scales very densely set on anterior part of flank, and difficult to count without destructing the specimens. Mouth oblique, jaws subequal, posterior angle below anterior third of eye, upper-lip width uniform, teeth caniform, in three rows. Lateral-line system without head canals. Largest individual observed 31.3 mm SL.

First dorsal fin with 6, rarely 5, unbranched rays; second dorsal fin with one unbranched and 8–9½ branched rays, rarely the second ray also unbranched; anal fin with two unbranched and 7½ branched rays; caudal fin rounded, with 6+6 or 7+6 branched rays. Pectoral with 17–18 and pelvic with 6+6 rays. Pelvic disc elliptical, posterior edge not reaching anus, usually also not reaching perianal organ in female and most males, pelvic anterior membrane reduced, deeply emarginate, rays projecting beyond membranes. Rays on second dorsal and anal fins prolonged, and free from membrane on tips in male.

Colouration. Background colour: beige or grey with a pale-to-dark-brown pattern. Chest and belly beige, dark-grey or blackish in nuptial males. Flank mottled, males often with indistinct, short, irregularly set and shaped bars in front of second dorsal-fin origin. A dark-grey band running from anterior part of eye downwards to upper lip. Tip of upper lip and chin dark-brown, followed by a grey blotch, a dark-brown and often a second grey and dark-brown blotch reaching from upper to lower lip. Chin grey, usually darker grey in females. Belly yellow in nuptial females, in life. First dorsal fin with a hyaline or silvery base and 2–3 dark-brown interrupted by 2–3 hyaline or silvery bands. Tip of first dorsal fin, usually also tip of second dorsal and anal fins silvery in nuptial males. First dorsal fin in males with a large black blotch on membrane between ray 5 and 6 and membrane behind ray 6. Black blotch present in females, but much smaller. Second dorsal fin with 3–4 and caudal with 3–4 rows of dark-brown blotches on membranes in females and juveniles. Second dorsal with enlarged mottled pattern or 3–5 brown bands in male. Anal, pectoral and pelvic fins hyaline in female. Anal with beige base and anterior 1/3, dark grey posterior 2/3 and silvery margin in nuptial male. Pectoral hyaline or yellowish with pale-brown band behind pectoral-fin base, anal hyaline, dark-grey or blackish in nuptial male.

Distribution. Economidichthys mornosensis is endemic to Greece, and is currently known only from springs and spring-fed streams in the Mornos River delta.

Etymology. The species is named after the Mornos River, in adjectival form. The name also honours the river delta, which comprises the type locality and the entire known distributional range of the species.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03DB87C5FFBFFF8539C5F90CBEEBFDEE	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
