Kuoh,1983: 16; Isaev,1988: 60; Zhang et al., 2007: 937; Li & Song, 2010: 203; Xue et al., 2016: 408; Zhang & Li, 2018: 90.

Type species. Tautocerus dworakowskae Anufriev, 1971 by original designation.

Description. Coloration. Crown with a black rounded spot near each eye on anterior margin. Face with median basal area dark brown and a triangular black marking near inner posterior margin of each eye. Pronotum with paired narrow irregular dark markings along anterior margin. Basal corner spots and median inverted T-shaped marking on scutellum black.

Morphology. Medium-sized leafhoppers (5.6–7.5 mm long). Median length of crown slightly shorter than length adjacent to eyes. Face wider across eyes than long. Ocelli located above ends of frontal sutures, closer to adjacent eyes than to each other.Antennal flagellum enlarged into a narrow lamellate structure. Anteclypeus slightly expanded laterally near apex, not surpassing genae. Lateral margins of genae nearly straight. Lora small, slightly elevated above level of genae. Forewing with four apical and three subapical cells; outer subapical cell smallest and closed; central subapical cell closed; inner subapical cell longest and open basally; appendix moderately broad. Hind femur with macrosetal formula 2+0; hind tibial macrosetae PD 17–22, AD 6–7, AV 10–12. Hind basitarsus with two platellae on distal transverse row.

Male genitalia. Male pygofer side often with a small conical process on outer ventral margin, and with dorsolateral fracture; anterodorsal apodeme absent. Anal collar (modified Xth segment) present, solidly attached to moderately broad pygofer dorsal bridge. Subgenital plates slightly longer than pygofer; broad and short, curved outward subapically, with long setae along dorsal margin and apex of distal half. Style elongate; apophysis long, foot-shaped apically, slightly curved dorsad; ventral margin serrate subapically; dorsal margin near apex bearing a row of short to long stout setae; apex slightly concave and with sparse short setae. Connective T-shaped, lateral arms shorter than stem; stem apex with broad carina-like process. Aedeagus simple; shaft tubular, curved dorsad, broad basally and gradually narrowing towards apex, apex acute, lacking subapical processes or occasionally bearing minute tubercles; dorsal apodeme well developed; preatrium indistinct; gonopore subapical on ventral surface.

Female genitalia. Ovipositor short, slightly projecting beyond pygofer. Sternite VII convexly produced posteriorly; posterior margin of median area narrowly concave in ventral view.

Distribution. China; Korean Peninsula.

Remarks. This genus resembles Podulmorinus Kwon, but differs in having the male pygofer side with a small conical process (absent in Podulmorinus), the subgenital plates broad and short, curved outward distally (narrow, elongate and slightly curved dorsad in Podulmorinus), and the aedeagal shaft broad at base and gradually tapering towards an acute apex, lacking subapical processes or occasionally bearing minute tubercles ( Podulmorinus with aedeagal shaft bearing long processes and subapical ventral margin obliquely truncated).

Key to the species of Tautocerus

Note. T. wangmoensis Li & Song, is excluded from the key as it is considered to belong to a different genus (see species Remarks below).

1. T. wangmoensis was described from Guizhou Province based on the holotype and paratypes and was placed in this genus according to the morphology of the subgenital plates and aedeagus.
