Bothroprosopa -group

The re-delimitation of the Bothroprosopa -group according to the present phylogeny includes Wharia , Minicosta , a new genus from New Caledonia, Palpocrates , Ceratoplatus , Ceratusa , Cyphometopis , Tonnoirina , Tarsocrates and Bothroprosopa . All, besides Ceratusa and Cyphometopis , are from New Zealand or nearby localities. The main advancements made in this work were the recognition that Wharia , Minicosta , Ceratusa and Cyphometopis are part of this group and the identification of synapomorphies of the Bothroposopa -group and characters that indicate its close relationship to Gymnoptera , Tapantia and other genera. The group is characterized by having elongated aristomeres, projected gena and epandria that come into contact under the hypoproct, although some members do not possess all of these characteristics.

Within the Bothroprosopa -group, there is an interesting series of frontal modifications, which are possibly related. These include the shortening of the frontal height, loss of fronto-orbital setae in some taxa, and projection of the first flagellomere over the frons in Ceratoplatus + Ceratusa + Cyphometopis .

Coniceromyia, Rhynchomicropteron, Phora, Hypoceridites and amber genera M and P

The above-mentioned genera form a clade based on the following synapomorphies: head with one to two genal setae and one to two short parafacials, more than two hypoproct setae and a phallapodeme connected to the left side of the hypopygium. Rhynchomicropteron shares with Phora and possibly other genera a R 1 characteristically curved at the apex and absence of sternite 7 in females. Phora amber species compose a series of nodes that gradually transition to the morphology of living species in the development of the right surstylus, elongation of extra frontal setulae and increase in the number of midtibia posterodorsal setae.

Spiniphora and its relatives

Spiniphora , Kuenburgia , Trispiniphora , Triphleba schulmanae and amber genus F form a clade based on the synapomorphic hind tibia with ventral setae, although this is absent in the last two genera. Living species of Spiniphora are recovered here as paraphyletic in relation to Trispiniphora , Triphleba schulmanae and the amber genus F. However, the position of the clade Triphleba schulmanae + amber genus F is not strongly supported and could easily change with the inclusion of additional information on genitalia and wing morphology of these taxa.

The large clade including Spiniphora , Kuenburgia and six other genera is sister to the clade comprising Chaetopleurophora + amber genus A, based on the elongated sternite 7 of females. In spite of this characteristic also being indicated as synapomorphic for the clade Spiniphora + Chaetopleurophora by Brown et al. (2015), it is not exclusive to these taxa and could not be observed in certain of the above-mentioned taxa. Support for this large clade including Spiniphora and Chaetopleurophora is therefore relatively low.
