Singh, N. Singh & Bhattacharya 2026

Caulocera hollowayi S. Singh, N. Singh & Bhattacharya sp. nov.

(Figs 1, 23)

TYPE MATERIAL EXAMINED: Holotype ♂, INDIA, Sikkim, Golitar (1530m), 7.vii.2018; Santosh Singh leg.; (NZCZSI).

DIAGNOSIS: Externally, C. hollowayi sp. nov. is similar to Caulocera species (Figs 2–7). However, it can be easily demarcated by the pale white forewing and hindwing, the black, narrow and slightly wavy antemedial and medial fasciae, the presence of two black spots close to the apex of the costal margin and on the middle of the outer margin of the forewing; and a black spot at the costa of the hindwing. The forewing ground colour of other Caulocera species is almost transparent white and the antemedial and medial fasciae are brownish, more robust and more strongly waved than in C. hollowayi . In C. hollowayi there is a fuscous spot between the antemedial and medial fasciae; the submarginal area has two fuscous patches on vein 1A + 2A and M2–M 3 in forewing; and the inner margin of hindwing is partially suffused with fuscous scales. The male genitalia of C. hollowayi sp. nov. are similar to those of Caulocera costavirgata Bucsek, 2012; however, the uncus of the new species is slightly shorter, subapically less swollen and apically more heavily setose; the tegumen is broader at the base; the vinculum is short and V-shaped; the juxta is bilobed; the valvular lobe is slightly longer, ovoid and distally membranous; the saccular processes are shorter, thicker and apically more flattened; the phallus is basally curved, equal to the length of vesica; and the vesica bears a long patch of prominent spines. Whereas in C. costavirgata has a longer and subapically highly swollen uncus, a basally narrower tegumen, a slightly broader vinculum forming a ‘Y’ shape apically, a bilobed juxta, a slightly shorter and squarish distal membranous valvular lobe, a longer and more tapered distal saccular processes, and a row of six small spines on the vesica.

DESCRIPTION: Male. Head: Head covered with pale yellow scales; antennae pale and ciliate; frons and vertex pale white; labial palpi porrect, short and covered with long scales. Thorax: Thorax and patagia covered with pale yellow scales; legs pale yellow. Wings: Forewing length 9mm; wing expanse 21mm in male. Forewing ground colour pale white; antemedial and medial fasciae sinuous with a black spot at base; costa black up to medial fascia, and pale yellowish in the apex; black spot on submarginal costa and a distinct marginal black spot between M2 and M3 veins. Hindwing pale yellowish and bearing a black spot on costa. Abdomen: Covered with pale scales, anal tuft yellowish. Male genitalia: Uncus long, setose, subapically swollen and apically pointed; tegumen long and broad; distal costal process of valva downwardly curved and apically flattened; distal membranous lobe of valva long and ovoid; juxta bilobed basally broad and apically rounded; vinculum narrow ‘V’ shaped. Phallus of aedeagus basally curved; vesica longer than phallus and bearing a long row of robust cornuti.

ETYMOLOGY: The new species is named after Jeremy Daniel Holloway, an eminent lepidopterist who has passed away in March 2025.

DISTRIBUTION: Sikkim, India.

Note: The new species has been assigned to the genus Caulocera based on the similarity in external morphology/ superficial similarity including size and colouration of adult, forewing maculation, presence of long scales around labial palpi, and similarities in attributes of the uncus, tegumen, valva and aedeagus. Additionally, the present study also represents the first record of the genus Caulocera Hampson, 1900 from India.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03D587ECFFB9C601548D080A3B159A86	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. (NZCZSI) . 2♂, data same as holotype .

DIAGNOSIS: A. buxa sp. nov. is externally similar to A. toxodes Hampson, 1907, however the new species is distinguished by its bright ochreous colour, the slightly longer submarginal streaks in the forewing, ochreous cilia, and the presence of fuscous scales between veins R1 and R 2 in hindwing. In A. toxodes, the forewing and hindwing are scaled with pale-yellow and the marginal streaks are slightly shorter and the cilia fuscous. In the male genitalia, A. buxa sp. nov. can be distinguished from A. toxodes by the distally depressed costa of valva; the remarkably short and tapering distal saccular process; the short and narrow juxta; the slightly broad and robust aedeagus; the moderately thicker and robust phallus; the presence of three distinct patches of cornuti in the vesica on the subbasal, medial and distal diverticulum; and the extent of the short distal patch of cornuti that does not reach the end of the distal diverticulum. In comparison, A. toxodes has a straight costa in the valva; the distal saccular process is slightly longer; the aedeagus is short and with a narrow phallus; the vesica bears only two distinct patches of cornuti (on the subbasal and distal diverticulum); and the distal patch of cornuti extends to the end of the distal diverticulum.

DESCRIPTION:Male. Head: Frons and vertex covered with ochreuos scales; antennae ochreuos and bipectinate. Thorax: Thorax covered with golden yellow scales, with two black spots on prothorax; patagia ochreous with black spot; legs yellowish. Wings: Forewing length 9–9.5 mm. Forewing covered with golden-yellow scales, having a basal black spot, a straight basal streak intersecting arched basal fascia, medial and postmedial fasciae ‘>’ or ‘<’ shaped respectively, submarginal streaks originating from postmedial fascia. Hindwing covered with golden yellow scales excluding fuscous patch of scales between R1 and R2 veins. Abdomen: Dorsal side covered with golden-yellow scales. Male genitalia: Uncus long and centrally dilated; valva long, narrow and apically pointed, costa slightly depressed distally, medial process on costa poorly developed and setosed; distal saccular process short and tapering; juxta short and tongue-shaped; aedeagus slightly longer with moderately thick phallus; vesica bearing three patches of cornuti on subbasal, medial and distal diverticulum; distal diverticulum bearing small field of spines.

ETYMOLOGY: Specific epithet denotes the Buxa Tiger Reserve of West Bengal India; this tiger reserve is adjacent to the type locality of new species.

DISTRIBUTION: West Bengal. India.

NOTE: A. toxodes is a tropical rainforest species mainly isolated by the Andaman Sea,, while the A. buxa sp. nov. occurs in seasonal and deciduous forest of the Himalayan foothills.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03D587ECFFBBC603548D0AF73C9E9805	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
