03CD8049AD112F1CFF68F49AFC82FE39.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis of subfamily. General forewing morphology as in Locustopsinae Handlirsch, 1906 or Araripelocustinae Martins-Neto, 1995, but with main branch of CuA + CuPaα continuing beyond the fusion to CuPaβ and terminating much closer to wing base than in any other Locustopsidae.	en	Schall, Ole-Kristian Odin, Lima, Daniel, Kotthoff, Ulrich, Pinheiro, Allysson P., Heads, Sam W., Husemann, Martin (2026): New species of Locustopsidae (Orthoptera: Caelifera) from the Crato Formation including the new subfamily Pseudoacridinae subfam. nov. 03CD8049AD112F1CFF68F49AFC82FE39.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Pseudoacridinae differs from Locustopsinae and Araripelocustinae in its CuA + CuPaα continuing beyond the fusion to CuPaβ and terminating much further towards the wing base than in the latter two subfamilies. In Locustopsinae and Araripelocustinae CuA + CuPaα ends in the fusion to CuPaβ. The currently described genera of Pseudoacridinae have three (Pseudoacrida) or two (Auroralocusta gen. nov.) branches of M and one branch of CuA + CuPaα. Yet, knowing the many combinations of M and CuA + CuPaα branches present especially in Locustopsinae it is possible that branch numbers also varied substantially in Pseudoacridinae. Thus, for now the only apomorphy is the continuation of CuA + CuPaα. The subfamily Pseudoacridinae is formally established herein. The name Pseudoacridinae has already been used in Schall et al. (2026), which was published just before the current article, without a formal diagnosis or designation of a type genus, and thus did not constitute an available name under the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature.	en	Schall, Ole-Kristian Odin, Lima, Daniel, Kotthoff, Ulrich, Pinheiro, Allysson P., Heads, Sam W., Husemann, Martin (2026): New species of Locustopsidae (Orthoptera: Caelifera) from the Crato Formation including the new subfamily Pseudoacridinae subfam. nov. 03CD8049AD162F1DFF68F1CEFADEFB47.taxon	etymology	Etymology. The specific epithet restituta is derived from the Latin verb restituere, meaning “ to restore, to give back, to reinstate. ” The feminine singular participle restituta translates as “ restored ” or “ returned. ” The name refers to the repatriation of the type specimen, which had been removed from Brazil and later returned through a scientific cooperation agreement between Brazil and Germany. Thus, the epithet honors the act of restitution and the restoration of the fossil to its homeland.	en	Schall, Ole-Kristian Odin, Lima, Daniel, Kotthoff, Ulrich, Pinheiro, Allysson P., Heads, Sam W., Husemann, Martin (2026): New species of Locustopsidae (Orthoptera: Caelifera) from the Crato Formation including the new subfamily Pseudoacridinae subfam. nov. 03CD8049AD172F1EFF68F7B3FBF7F882.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Pseudoacrida eumastacoimima sp. nov. differs from P. sennlaubi, the only other species of the genus known from the Crato Formation, by its significantly smaller size (forewing length: 22 mm vs. 36 – 37 mm in P. sennlaubi). In addition, the characteristic eumastacoid-like head shape morphology observed in the new species is of uncertain presence in P. sennlaubi. A newly identified specimen (CNBS 00416, Fig. 4), here assigned to P. sennlaubi based on forewing venation patterns congruent with the holotype, provides partial insight into head morphology of the species. Although the head is incompletely preserved, its general outline appears to resemble that of modern Acrididae MacLeay, 1821 more than that of Eumastacoidea or Pyrgomophidae, suggesting that the eumastocoidlike condition may be absent in P. sennlaubi. It is important to note that CNBS 00416 is not part of the type series of P. sennlaubi, but is presented herein to augment the morphological understanding of the species, whose holotype is based solely on isolated wings (Nel & Jouault, 2022). Pseudoacrida eumastacoimima sp. nov. also differs from its Early Cretaceous Chinese congener, P. costata Lin, 1982, by the proportionally broader area between CuA + CuPaα and CuPaβ. This condition is shared with P. sennlaubi, in which the same respective area is similarly expanded (Nel & Jouault, 2022), potentially representing a synapomorphy uniting the Crato species.	en	Schall, Ole-Kristian Odin, Lima, Daniel, Kotthoff, Ulrich, Pinheiro, Allysson P., Heads, Sam W., Husemann, Martin (2026): New species of Locustopsidae (Orthoptera: Caelifera) from the Crato Formation including the new subfamily Pseudoacridinae subfam. nov. 03CD8049AD152F10FF68F627FCE2FE61.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Mesolocustopsis levis sp. nov. can be differentiated from all known congeners by the combination of a relatively large forewing (30.5 mm length) and a reduced branching pattern of RP, which exhibits only two branches. This character state contrasts with other species of the genus possessing forewings of comparable or greater length, e. g., M. vikingi (Martins-Neto, 2003) and M. caririensis (Martins-Neto, 1990), both of which exhibit five RP branches. The reduced number of RP branches in M. levis sp. nov. may therefore represent a derived condition within the genus, independent of overall wing size.	en	Schall, Ole-Kristian Odin, Lima, Daniel, Kotthoff, Ulrich, Pinheiro, Allysson P., Heads, Sam W., Husemann, Martin (2026): New species of Locustopsidae (Orthoptera: Caelifera) from the Crato Formation including the new subfamily Pseudoacridinae subfam. nov. 03CD8049AD1A2F11FF68F43FFAC2FB56.taxon	discussion	In a recent overview of Locustopsidae (Schall et al., 2025), we compiled a comprehensive table summarizing all formally known species of the family, along with and their respective geographic and stratigraphic distributions. Three fossil sites stand out for their substantial contributions to locustopsid diversity: the Lower Cretaceous of England (Gorochov et al., 2006), the Lower Jurassic of Germany (Handlirsch, 1906; Zessin, 1983), and the Aptianaged Crato Formation of Brazil (Martins-Neto, 2003). With the addition of the two new genera and seven new species described across our current and previous study (Schall et al., 2025), and in light of recent taxonomic revisions, the Crato Formation now harbors the highest known diversity of Locustopsidae worldwide (Fig. 6). A total of 26 species assigned to 11 genera are currently known from this unit. Notably, the Crato Formation is the only locality where representatives of all three subfamilies — Araripelocustinae Martins-Neto, 1995, Locustopsinae Handlirsch, 1906, and the newly proposed Pseudoacridinae — co-occur. In contrast, the Lower Jurassic of Germany yield 16 species but only three genera: Locustopsis Handlirsch, 1906, Schwinzia Zessin, 1983, and Cratolocustopsis Martins-Neto, 2003) (Schall et al., 2025; Zessin, 1983). The Lower Cretaceous of England, while more diverse at the generic level (five genera), contains comparatively fewer species, with only seven formally described to date (Gorochov et al., 2006). The remarkable diversity and morphological disparity of Locustopsidae in the Crato Formation underscore its paleontological significance as a key locality for understanding evolutionary dynamics of early Acrididea. The cooccurrence of multiple lineages, including highly derived and morphologically divergent forms, suggests that this paleoenvironment may have represented a center of diversification for the group during the Early Cretaceous.	en	Schall, Ole-Kristian Odin, Lima, Daniel, Kotthoff, Ulrich, Pinheiro, Allysson P., Heads, Sam W., Husemann, Martin (2026): New species of Locustopsidae (Orthoptera: Caelifera) from the Crato Formation including the new subfamily Pseudoacridinae subfam. nov.
